As someone who loves covered bridges, this sucks! However, if you are a Covered Bridges freak like me, check out the 'Covered Bridges' app in the iTunes App Store. Find more bridges you love, that havent been destroyed :( Cheers!
This video which the potential to be great was awful because the camera man could not hold the damn camera at least a little steady or least to zoom GENTLY
That's too bad. While you're fixing the bridge please give this camera person some lessons in photography. a) focus on one thing at a time b) zoom in and out as slow and as litle as possible c) stop scanning all over the place and sit still! The last 10 seconds of the video we can finally stop and see what's going on.
Ironic that the water is actually not going over the bridge or if it is it knocked half of it over. It looks more like it went around it and eroded away part of it.
Hey there, TheStonesinHD, looks like you went viral... COOL. Glad you and the kids are fine and your mom & dad, too. All's well up here -- never even lost power or DSL. Sometimes living on the top of a hill can be a good thing.
I was on the bridge during the storm of 1973. Had to evacuate the bridge as the water rose. It almost got to the bottom of the bridge that year. This is just amazing. There were propane tanks and hoses floating down the river banging into the bridge. I am curious, if anyone knows Mel Fogg's red barn ? DId the water get into it? My old friend Theron Boyd used to say that in 1927, the water was 4' high in Mel Fogg's Barn.. Would be interesting to hear how high it was during this storm
I spent my summers in Quechee as a kid and teenager. I saw several floods that took down the Lakeland Course bridge, but never saw water come close to the underside of the covered bridge. This is just amazing to see and horrifying to witness. Did the bridge make it through the night or is it gone?
Just last year, I drove over that bridge, lunched at Simon Pearce restaurant and walked along the Gorge to the hydroelectric dam. I have such great memories of the weekend and lovely photos. I am so sorry for the devastation and flooding and hope Quechee can recover soon.
We love Simon Pearce and Quechee- so sad to see such damage to the place. Thanks for filming and posting. Hoping that all you guys suffered was property damage.
@buffygilmore16 I assume Simon is doing just fine - his building though, not so much... the water was all through the first floor windows from what I could see.
What is not seen or mentioned is how far above the river the bridge was on a normal day, which would give an idea as to how high the water was. If I remember correctly, it was at least 15 feet? Ii may be wrong.
@buffygilmore16 i use to work at Simons. Simons suffered damage to the downstairs kitchen and glass blowing operations. rumored to be closed for the next few months that is foliage.
@magbayross lol thanks for the advice - I'm no expert with a camera (as you can clearly see). Had I known more than a handful of people would see this, maybe I would have been more careful!
@TheStonesInHD Thank you so much for this video. I'm originally from the Upper Valley and am currently living in Los Angeles, thanks to you and others like you, I can see how hardly my twin home states got hit. I'm posting a video using some of your footage because it moved me so much. I hope you don't mind. You're all in my thoughts.

It's really sad that all these covered bridges were affected by Irene... there weren't many of them left to begin with!

@upnorthone1 Easily 15 feet - probably twice that I'd guess? It had a rope swing underneath it most summers.

the jump from the beams under the bridge to the water is 45 feet during the summer...
