Nuclear power plants can melt down like a nuclear bomb and kill millions of people! They dump radioactive waste in rivers. Look at France, it has become a living hell because of nuclear power. We need MORE coal power, and eventually wind mills and solar panels!
The fuel (enriched Uranium) needed for a nuclear weapon to properly function contains 90% Uranium-235(whose atoms can be split), and 10% other forms of Uranium. Reactor grade Uranium contains 3-4% Uranium-235. That's a difference of 85% purity to create a nuclear explosion!
And where'd you hear the NPP's dump waste in rivers?! They keep them under borated water in "spent-fuel" pools or buried several hundred feet underground.
And how is France a living hell? France is the world's number one exporter of electricity, exporting 18% of its net power produced to other european countries.

Heh, McCain just recently outdid himself at a rally: ""We talked about offshore drilling and he said he would, quote, 'consider' offshore drilling. We talked about nuclear power. Well is has to be safe, environment, blah blah blah."
Of course, his base loved it, but beyond that, uh...
my primary question is, has McCain taken a science course in the past 50 years? Good chance he hasn't, as he's currently 72. It doesn't help that he doesn't know how to use the internet. Wikipedia would help him greatly. Nuclear Energy is CO_2_ clean, but remains very unclean in that it leaves behind nuclear, radioactive waste that can be very dangerous and will pile up over time.
nuclear is not clean or safe, it never has been. we have no proper means to dispose of nuclear waste from such power plants which is why Obama does not support building 2,000 more like McCain does. anyone with even the slightest environmental knowledge knows that nuclear plants are hazardous to everything they touch
"it's safe and it's clean! I know nothing about how a reactor works! I figure we just...tossed the spent fuel rods over the side or something! How the heck would I know, I was busy crashing planes!"
@xTheOxx And, mccain he put out his Warren Buffet bull shit boy joe the plumber and "vetted" a category 5 moron who has foreign policy experience because she can see Russia. Bush burned out the sup. ct the first time and voting machines the second, so the next one will have to come up with some other made up bull shit, and; guess where it will appear....fox (news).
ok we all realize that there is a downside to nuclear power/energy, the disposing of the nuclear waste. BUT, obama is a STRONG supporter of "clean" coal energy, first off, there is no such thing as "clean" coal, and secondly you can store the gas emissions of coal in tanks underwater or underground but what happens when the emissions are let out or when it escapes the tank. The amount of coal emmisions will melt the ice caps faster then ever, the sudden rise in co2. dangerous.
so what should we do? when we have done so much damage from coal exhaust to our atmosphere, we turn to nuclear power and damage earth's surface too! then we wont have anywhere to live. bad air, bad land....
"clean" coal energy is just clean*er* than regular coal energy -- a better/more efficient/cleaner way to use coal. Obviously it doesn't strictly avoid CO2 emission.
It's worth it to get this technology to places where they're going to be using coal anyway, to reduce the environmental impact. It's not a universal fix for energy problems by any standard, but it's worthwhile nonetheless, and thus supporting it is a good thing.
'sen Obama says that it has to be safe for dispose...or something like a..look, I was on navy ships that had power plants, np in safe and clean..." So, Sen McCain, it seems that you don't care anything about radioactive waste disposal..."naahhhhh, what's the big deal? a little radioactive contamination is going to harm you? coooome ooooonnnn"
Safe and clean compared to the other MAJOR sources I assume. Is it possible to rely on wind, solar, and water alone? Is that what Jeremiah Wright meant by "God Dam America?"
Nuclear power isn't entirely terrible, however, disposing of the waste like other viewers have pointed out is a problem. Furthmore, I agree with Obama's plan to use nuclear power a just one of many alternative energy sources while using American innovation to create a truely viable source of energy for the future.
Let´s hope that the Americans get their act together and vote for Obama.
Face it - the US is a lot worse of now compared to prior to the Bush JR era. A complete idiot has run your country for eight years, your economy has hit rock bottom, the "war on terror" is a joke, and the rest of the world hate your
Its interesting that the sentiment meter shows people reacting negatively to nuclear power.
I don't agree with McCain much, but I do agree with him that nuclear power is one of the most viable forms of alternative energy.
The nuclear industry in the US has a history of bureaucracy and corruption, but in other countries its already successful and meets a large percentage of their energy needs.
Safe and clean.... ok, so why does nuke waste it still being shipped into Yucca mountain, thousands of feet down and the only access to it is by freight train??? It's all waste!!!
Most of all you ignorant people should do your homework about nuclear power before placing your pathetic opinions on this issue.
the only good thing about nuclear power is theres enough uranium to supply us for years to come, however people ignore the fact that the waste has to go somewhere and takes millions of years for it to degrade, meanwhile its still very radioactive and nobody can live in the area for millions of years. Good point
I'm sure mccain doesn't want nuclear waste treatment to be unsafe, no one wants that, this was clearly a poorly spoken comment born out of nervousness or something. It still strikes me how old he sounded and appeared today.
haha i'm the biggest nuclear power advocate there is but it's pretty hilarious how he seems to dismiss obama's concerns that it be "safe or disposableorsomethinlikethat". BAH LISTEN TO THIS MAN, HOW AUDACIOUS, HE WANTS THINGS TO BE SAFE
yea it might be clean eggcept for the waste we've never been able to get rid of and are guarding 24/7 to keep from falling into wrong hands. bUt safe? cmon as the ppl whu wer and still are affected at Chernobyl.
there are ecological, safe, and economically viable methods to treat nuclear waste. So instead of waste that is dangerous for several millenia it will only be dangerous for several years. And for Chernobyl the accident occurred because they were running an experiment and disabled all the safety systems of the reactor. If you look up the safety records of nuclear reactors and see that nuclear accidents are fairly rare.
There are many solutions: solar, wind, magnetic motors, hydrogen fuel (water is the only by-product), water, etc. I think nuclear should be at the very bottom of the list, or erased altogether.
Solar, yes, but it's not at a point where it can be used on a large scale. We need to invest in it though.
Wind, absolutely, if you live in the right areas. Same with tidal and hydro.
Hydrogen is a method of energy storage, like batteries. It's not a method of energy generation - to produce hydrogen fuel you first need an energy source like nuclear, wind, hydro, coal etc.
Magnetic motors (e.g. Orbo) are perpetual-motion scams. They put out less energy than they take in.
McCain had melanoma, a skin cancer. It is related to too much sun exposure and certain skin types. The nuclear reactors of ships have nothing to do with melanoma.
Nuclear power truly is an cheap, abundant source of clean energy. The only bad part, besides the fact that plants can be targeted by terrorists, is that the nuclear waste which needs to be stored for thousands of years before it breaks down. This isn't as bad as it sounds. It can be stored in retired salt mines and such.
The longer the half-life of a particular isotope, the less radioactive it is. The dangerous stuff decays fairly quickly, so if you can keep waste in storage for a few hundred years the radiation won't be much worse than background levels.
I appreciate your response, and I understand about half-lifes and such, but the point I'm trying to make is that they should not be calling it something that it won't be for at least "a few hundred years". It's deceptive.
True, and it's not exactly easy to store nuclear waste for that length of time in a safe place. Breeder reactors are expensive, too.
It's certainly not unfeasible though, and nuclear is a much greener and safer method of large-scale power generation than anything available at the moment. We should invest heavily in solar, but that will take a while to pay off, so in the meantime nuclear (or hydro where available) is a much better option than coal.
McCain is incredibly disingenious when he talks about environmental issues, expressing concern for the world we leave to the next generations. His flippant stance on nuclear waste is a perfect example of this. But on a side note, he NEVER says how we would pay to build all of these nuclear power plants. They would cost BILLIONS & take decades, yet he makes it sound as if it is as easily done as said. As long as he doesn't treat the subject seriously, then we can't treat him seriously.
right, and what if that money was spent on truly clean, truly safe wind power, or research into tidal, geothermal, or other such energy sources, that are much less harmful and much more abundant.
Biden continues to lie about his wifes accident!I mean it is terrible to lose family members to a traffic accident. But why on earth would a United States Senator fabricate an embellishment and claim that it was a drunk driver's fault, when the record clearly indicates it was not? Biden exploits his dead wife for political gain! Not only that the truck driver was not charged and he was not at fault! If he can lie about something as tragic and evident like that..Imagine what else he's lying about!

Most of all you ignorant people should do your homework about nuclear power before placing your pathetic opinions on this issue.
mopareddie 3 years ago
the only good thing about nuclear power is theres enough uranium to supply us for years to come, however people ignore the fact that the waste has to go somewhere and takes millions of years for it to degrade, meanwhile its still very radioactive and nobody can live in the area for millions of years. Good point
megabouncer 3 years ago
I'm sure mccain doesn't want nuclear waste treatment to be unsafe, no one wants that, this was clearly a poorly spoken comment born out of nervousness or something. It still strikes me how old he sounded and appeared today.

haha i'm the biggest nuclear power advocate there is but it's pretty hilarious how he seems to dismiss obama's concerns that it be "safe or disposableorsomethinlikethat". BAH LISTEN TO THIS MAN, HOW AUDACIOUS, HE WANTS THINGS TO BE SAFE

Wait, what? nuclear power is safe? and clean?
yea it might be clean eggcept for the waste we've never been able to get rid of and are guarding 24/7 to keep from falling into wrong hands. bUt safe? cmon as the ppl whu wer and still are affected at Chernobyl.
MPrye 3 years ago
Mprye,
there are ecological, safe, and economically viable methods to treat nuclear waste. So instead of waste that is dangerous for several millenia it will only be dangerous for several years. And for Chernobyl the accident occurred because they were running an experiment and disabled all the safety systems of the reactor. If you look up the safety records of nuclear reactors and see that nuclear accidents are fairly rare.
vmaramis 3 years ago
so is McCain saying that we shouldn't be concerned with safe disposal of nuclear waste?
stefanieshank 3 years ago
There are many solutions: solar, wind, magnetic motors, hydrogen fuel (water is the only by-product), water, etc. I think nuclear should be at the very bottom of the list, or erased altogether.
hipmama715 3 years ago
Solar, yes, but it's not at a point where it can be used on a large scale. We need to invest in it though.
Wind, absolutely, if you live in the right areas. Same with tidal and hydro.
Hydrogen is a method of energy storage, like batteries. It's not a method of energy generation - to produce hydrogen fuel you first need an energy source like nuclear, wind, hydro, coal etc.
Magnetic motors (e.g. Orbo) are perpetual-motion scams. They put out less energy than they take in.

He was on Navy ships with nuclear power .. and now he has cancer ..there you go my friend .. even stupid people can see the correlation ..
grenoble1234 3 years ago
grenoble1234,
McCain had melanoma, a skin cancer.

It can be stored in retired salt mines and such.
mhoney89 3 years ago
If it produces waste that is toxic for a long period of time, I wouldn't exactly call it "clean" energy.
hipmama715 3 years ago
The longer the half-life of a particular isotope, the less radioactive it is. The dangerous stuff decays fairly quickly, so if you can keep waste in storage for a few hundred years the radiation won't be much worse than background levels.
viscountprawn 3 years ago
I appreciate your response, and I understand about half-lifes and such, but the point I'm trying to make is that they should not be calling it something that it won't be for at least "a few hundred years". It's deceptive.
hipmama715 3 years ago
True, and it's not exactly easy to store nuclear waste for that length of time in a safe place. Breeder reactors are expensive, too.
It's certainly not unfeasible though, and nuclear is a much greener and safer method of large-scale power generation than anything available at the moment. We should invest heavily in solar, but that will take a while to pay off, so in the meantime nuclear (or hydro where available) is a much better option than coal.
viscountprawn 3 years ago
Well, that's actually something I can agree on. New nuclear power plants are clean and safe... probably not the ones on 1970 navy ships though.

Well... besides Homer Simpson?
UltraSWG 3 years ago 2
McCain is incredibly disingenious when he talks about environmental issues, expressing concern for the world we leave to the next generations. His flippant stance on nuclear waste is a perfect example of this. But on a side note, he NEVER says how we would pay to build all of these nuclear power plants. They would cost BILLIONS & take decades, yet he makes it sound as if it is as easily done as said. As long as he doesn't treat the subject seriously, then we can't treat him seriously.
dafttool 3 years ago 3
right, and what if that money was spent on truly clean, truly safe wind power, or research into tidal, geothermal, or other such energy sources, that are much less harmful and much more abundant.
