He was a bad man! He could control an arena of 10,000 people(as he often did when he was late showing up to play) or sit down Joe Frazier, as he did on the Mike Douglas show. He also ruined the greatest band on the planet(including siblings Freddie, Rose and little sister) with his drug use.
@Nanadsyl Sly is one of the pioneers and innovators of Funk but James Brown was the originator. 'PAPA'S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG' released in 1965, is the blue print for everything that came after it that can be termed Funk music. Sly & The Family Stone didn't release his first album till 1967, two years after James Brown's innovative concept of 'the one' gave birth to Funk. Sly added the psychedelic element to Funk.
@bolder2009 Im not going to dispute James Browns significance in Soul and Funk. I mean he is and forever will be the "Godfather", He laid the foundation. No denying But, Sly took it to the next level.
@Nanadsyl Of course I know that. But James Brown and his musicians layed down the marker and blue print of Funk before Sly even came on the scene in 1967 with 'A Whole New Thing'.
@Nanadsyl Sly & The Family Stone are my alltime favourite band, and for me he made the greatest Funk record of alltime. No one can take anything away from Sly, but its important to acknowledge the founder. So much has been taken, stolen, or borrowed from James Brown and he still doesn't always get the credit he deserves. He is arguably the most influential figure in the last 50's years of 20th century popular music.
Haha...I loveeee his voice! And woo he was sexy!
