i feel offended by sid meiers for what they show in this video, ok i know this isnt real History but is with this kind of historical games that kids are influenced nowadays, this is a huge mistake by erase the influence of a country that was pionner in colonization, exploration and was the bridge between thousands of tribes with nations.
pfft portugal was more of a trade empire, mostly in the southern hemisphere. yeah they had brazil which of course meant they get the best tea and coffe, but in terms of actual possessions the british dominated.
Why people always connect Portugal with Brazil only? Portugal had more than Brazil, the most wealthest country with yet unexplored resources is Angola a Portuguese ex-province, Mozambique, Goa(very important in India), Malaca, Macau (very important place for Portugal in Asia) together with Ilha Formosa (today Taiwan),and the first contact of japonese with europe through portuguese, and the first connection of portugal with north america in Terra Nova (today Canada) in 1400's.
the british dominated because british was more to use the force and military than diplomacy and commercial trades like Portugal.
the portuguese was a very pacific empire compared to others empires and survived, because to create an empire it need to have strong military to control it.
I thought those soldiers in the very beginning were portuguese...? That or Spanish. I won't be ignorant and say "same thing", but they do wear similar uniforms and used to fly similar banners.
But I think the footage provided is to represent the first Europeans to set foot in New England, which would technically be the Portuguese. They're carrying the nation's flag to be planted, kind of like the US and the moon landing.

There is not enough footage of them, so it could be either.
