It saddened me when Phil dismissed this track in later interviews, it kind of destroyed the magic a bit. It's a wonderful tune.
Whilst he was just being genuine and honest, he would've perhaps been wiser to have understood the sensibilities of thousands of people before being quite so outspoken. This is beautiful music and thank God for all the great people on here who continue to promote it with their brilliant videos.
@millsy2010 I agree. He made that comment in a 'Modern Drummer' interview. I thought it was a bit much when said that it "was a track like this" that made him leave Genesis. My thought was, "well it's not like you play it, so what's the point?" Anyway, it was interesting that Phil seems to have soften on the "old stuff in more recent years.
burning rope ! what a beauty that still goes on and on , One of the most beautiful lyrics also. Tony 's creativity is merciless it does not compare with any of his contemporaries, a very unique artist who sticks sincerely to what he is to what profoundly he is ,human all too human, beautiful human...
This is from one of their most overlooked albums - ...And Then There Were Three. A beautiful transitory album from prog to pop/rock! Wish I'd seen this tour. Thx a lot for posting!
My first GENESIS-show in 78 in cologne/germany,and BURNING ROPE my favourite song,in the 70´s.....then came in july2007 the great and fantastic concert in munich!
How can it be? I listen to 70s Genesis almost every day since around 77 - and I never get tired. I will listen to this intil I die. The fact that Genesis were fantastic live makes it all the better. Yep, the Chicago uptown gig 78 is one of the great bootlegs. Tony's keyboards are awesome - he still has the Hammond T-102 and Mellotron. New is the Yamaha electric grand. Not sure what the synth was - I guess Arp Quadra. Sounds fantastic! And man Phil has such a gorgeous voice! All ace musicians!
This song will show, that Genesis is seasonable as their own songs are an art of
showing, that something is wrong with our world. Genesis demonstrate ever of someone or somethis, that will said : look at this, there must be changed something. Genesis is the contemporariest rock band of the world.
thanks GOD for sending Tony Banks to this world... a truly heavenly song... one of my favorite songs of all time... Long Live Genesis... Long Live Tony Banks!
@argonnj After Steve Hackett left the band, Colins sadly turned Genesis away from progressive rock, following a more... middle- of- the- road... path ! Allas... it was no longer THE GENESIS we knew and loved, speaking for myself... naturally...
Tony was full of imagination, and he had the great chance to be with Genesis, the best Vehicle for his musical ideas.Good live sound for this one here, would have liked so much to see them play...
Tony Banks has musical harmonies and melodies in every CELL of his body. He just creates more and more beauty. The amazing thing is that each song has enough melody to fill about 15 contemporary songs, but he just keeps it coming....the song flows from melody to melody without any filler...thank you Tony Banks for your talent and invention!!!!!
BANKS FOR EVER

Just the way either Chester or Phil play the drums in the instrumental part of Burning Rope. One of my favorite versions!

Great song, too bad Genesis didn't play this song after the And Then There Were Three tour. I remember reading Colins wasn't a fan of the song.
