My nokia n8 just died last night....tried to charge several time and sometimes starts charging by appearing the light near the usb entrance, and the Nokia logo on the screen but then it just turn off back to see same...anyone as the same problem?
My brand new N8 just died. At nokia customer care, here in Italy, they told me that they've been facing this problem since the first release and still can't solve it. The only thing they can do is give you another N8, but you have to kiss all your videos and pics goodbye.
Dear Nokia Customer Care: if you really care about me (a former Nokia customer) why don't you just give me a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note?
Amazing! Really amazing! I have experienced this issue just today on my month old N8. Either I got a model from sooner production or the issue lasts. Not only the Symbian is really bad, the phone has been restarting itself once in a while, now this happens. I knew I shouldn't have moved to NSeries.
What is the frame rate?I bought a N8 last week. My HD video quality is not smooth, I am not sure this is due to the frame rate or due to using phone memory rather than high speed SD card.
a chineese phone is more reliable than a nokia . I have the C7 and its always crashing/rebooting (out of the box) with no apps installed . waste of money
technology gone bad..that's nokia..i will never buy nokia products again!! n8 is a dead product, good as trash.. imagine, they launch the product in the market with a known issues and problem beforehand? what a bunch of losers!!
fucking pieces of shit cant even produce a fucking phone without screwing up every goddamn part of it! social network and navigation system fucks off if you reset the garbage can they call n8, and after a fucking week it turns off and decides not to turn on. useless fucking monkeys! why do you have to compete with iPhone if you know you are too fucking stupid?go back to making fucking tires you monkeys! anyone who had a hand in developing this piece of shit called n8 should be publicly executed!
too many inconsistencies here. When he says rectified, what does he mean? The n8 is already shipped across the globe, so doesnt that mean all n8 are affected because it is a hardware defect. So what about the other devices are they affected as well. To me his points were pretty vague and is down to your perception of his comments
The flaw is due to the design itself, nokia cost cutting with green solder and not putting a layering of a certain kind of gel that protects the board from things like overheating to even vibrations.
Another problem causing it is that due to the poor quality that when the phone overheats the cpu occasinally does not write to the EEPROM properly to start up the next time resulting in either constant reebooting or just not turning on at all.
he should have also told people that which batch of n8 is having no problem instead of confusing people...he's saying problem is fixed but when and in which batch..i prefer to buy this n8 in march 2011.i think so that will be the good time
Now i know why Nokia doesn't really care about fixing bugs not only for one product but also for thw whole product range. This snobbish guy doesn't care about because only the poor and stupid (compared to him) buy Nokia phones. He probably owns a VERTU
My N8 didn't had the problem with rebooting/dying but its laggy while gaming, listening to music or playing a video. More than 150 MB free on C:\, no apps in background, did a restart, etc. Now i'll replace it until i can return it.
Wow small number. I was screwed 3 times with the N97 (keeps on hanging and the backlight turning off issue) and I'm on my 3rd N8 already! While the phone is spectacular when it works and the camera is amazing (waaaaaaaay better than the N97 which keeps crashing). It keeps on going white screen on me and shutting off. Annoying as hell since my country doesn't even acknowledge this problem and asks me to replicate on the spot.
oh yes, covered by warranty, it is the hassle of returning a brand new phone that broke down twice and the end result is more than a month wait. The small number of consumers said by Nicholas can be big numbers to us consumers when you drop by the service centre to find there are many others having the same problem with their brand new N8s...oh Nokia buck up shape up! Unless you want to ship out.
I hope that someone from Nokia reads this: I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH NOKIA! I have had my N97 for 6 months and, by far, this is the WORST phone I have ever owned! I used to love Symbian and its flexibility, zillions of apps but... Nokia live on its old glory! I am an extremely heavy user when it comes to a smartphone (if N97 can be called that at all?) and the slowness of N97 kills me! I wanted to buy N8 but having read other reviews of N8, I am switching to HTC - Android. Symbian is dead!
Nokia always have faulty devices I'm nokia user since 1999 the even n900 when nokia released first time it had lot bugs. Now tell me is iPhone has all this issues! Don't think so only the 4 and not that big of deal issues and already steve jobs admit that when he say we are not perfect.
What percentage of the N8s are not turning on? Every phone these days seems to have issues. The N8 seems to have one of the most severe .... it doesn't even turn on. I'd recommend to anyone thinking about buying to wait a few months and wait until all of the bugs are fixed.
i love how those people keep saying small number. yes it is a small number percentage wise but counting the people having the problems is too large of a problem.
Sounds like the quality control is still as "good" as it was with Nokia N97 which was so bad its ended stuck in a box gatherting dust unsused as Nokia`s dealer wouldnt offer a refund.
I'd be VERY wary of buying another Nokia and thats from a loyal customer of 15 years.....
Oh and good luck to anyone trying to get there N8 repaired in the UK my N95 whent back 8 times for repair and came back with same rebooting problem.....
my son had the n91.phone died, when replaced was keep rebooting
my 5800 with some apps still reboots

@babis3g I have similar problem with N93 . It was so bad that they replaced it with N93i . We were told never buy newly release models and waited 3 months . My brother did and got a problem free N82 . But still reboots rarely(barely) . I think it is being a smartphone . I heard similar horror stories from apple to sony ericsson but all of them are usually first to second batches . And rebooting thou rarely is normal phenomenon to all smartphone regardless of brand .
Nokia !! You directors IDIOTs!! I need normal programs and systems for my smartphone nokia 5800 ! I gave you the money! Dismiss the entire team of software!!!
@gavrilaeugen It just turned off and will not turn back on.It is under Warrenty so I'l hav2 send it in and wait ages for them to tell me its broken, then wait even long for them to give me a new one
Well.. Actually Malaysia has stopped N8 because of these issues. But I really want to get one soon. I hope Nokia Will really to fix these problems and I can get a new N8...
@babis3g If you are close to one why not go there and ask?
I also suggest you to post your question as an reply to the latest N8-related article at the conversations website. There are always some staff there willing to answer questions.
So far my N8 has worked great, of course that is no comfort to those who have a dead device, and I hope this fault does not show up on mine in the future. Web searches reveal that "dead phones" are an issue for all major smartphones. The bottom line is not the dead phones but how Nokia reacts and treats these customers.
I have to give Nokia thumbs up for reacting to this issue very quickly and taking the responsibility for these unfortunate malfunctions.
In my obinion this issue has been blown out of proportion. I can't even be sure that the one I might have is included in the 'small' number of the defective N8s. Should I be worried? I seriously want the N8, but.............
As a true Nokia-addict i'm sure that Nokia is going to take good care of all those "individuals" who are facing the N8 shut down-/power up- problem. This is a problem i never had with my N8, the only problem i had together with other N8 owners was the photos-app (gallery) not opening, it was just showing a pop-up mentioning "refreshing your media", the solution to this problem was to reset the device to factory settings. Otherwise i'm very happy with my N8, it's the best Nokia N-series ever !!!
Apologies for the poor audio quality in the recording. We quickly put this video together this evening, our wireless mics sounded just find through my headphones, but there was some interference in recording - so I used the audio from the Canon 5DII's internal mic.
@clothearednincompoop Most of the flawed units are N8-00 . I am asking because N8-02 is already available and I am buying one this January . I really hate buying a dud phone again . And yes it exist and practically 6 days old in our country .
@clothearednincompoop Also it is not version 2 . N8-02 is just version 1 and the 02 is a code for shipment batch(not sure) . They used that system for a long time . My N93-01 and my brother's N83-05 are good examples for this and the last number are used for tracking and recalls of certain batch . I really learned this the hard way when my N93-01 had a hardware system failure and friends N93 had also similar failure .
I was thinking about Nokia's latest naming convention with the -xx stating a different model in the same category and price level like there's the C6-00 and C6-01.
So they should label the different N8(-00) batches N8-00-01, N8-00-02 etc. ;-)
@clothearednincompoop They did used that sort of . The last number may indicate version and may be written as 1.00 or v. 1 or ver. 1.00 but rarely seen . But I base my judgement on the second set of digit . Plus, waiting for third of forth batches(usually 3months) drastically decreases the chance of duds and models are 10%-30% cheaper with more apps already for that model .
@NokiaConversations Perhaps if you were recording with a Nokia N8 it would have had more of an impact on all fronts (audio, video, community). Just sayin.....

People never seem to learn from history.
Even if you insist on a Nokia, you're a fool to be an early adopter and purchase it immediately after its release.
At least wait out 3-6 months, when the firmware and software has stabilized, and maybe there will be a price cut too.
Nokia, two tips:
1) Improve the quality control in your China factories. Don't be penny-wise, pound foolish.
2) Focus on Meego. Relegate Symbian to low-end to mid-low end devices.
