My dad grew up in the Juniata Park neighborhood of Philadelphia in the 50's 60's and early 70's. It was lower middle/working class, but a very solid neighborhood. You could walk around at night by yourself and you wouldn't have to worry. Every once and a while we'll drive through the old neighborhood, all of my older relatives always go back and look with despair. Things change, revitalization has started encroaching on some ofthe rundown areas and believe me; these thugs aren't happy about it.

Then the jobs were shipped overseas, because a Chinese worker will work for a 10th of the price and the corporations made more money. My dad grew up in the Juniata Park neighborhood of Philadelphia in the 50's 60's and early 70's. It was lower middle/working class, but a very solid neighborhood. You could walk around at night by yourself and you wouldn't have to worry. Every once and a while we'll drive through the old neighborhood, all of my older relatives always go back and look with despair. Things change, revitalization has started encroaching on some ofthe rundown areas and believe me; these thugs aren't happy about it.

@jaysea32 There was industry then. A booming post-WW2 economy, car factories, textile plants etc. People had jobs and hope. Then the jobs were shipped overseas, because a Chinese worker will work for a 10th of the price and the corporations made more money. Then the drugs started to flow into the neighbourhoods, first heroin in the 60s and 70s, then crack in the 80s.

@jaysea32 They weren't. Philadelphia and Detroit were huge industrial cities with large factories. A lot of the row houses in this documentary were actually built by companies as employee housing. As early as the late 50's Detroits population started to decrease as people move into suburbs. Philadelphia started changing in the 60s. The factories outsourced and closed their doors. People left, housing prices went through the floor, white flight; these people filled the holes. Drugs destroyed them

There are so many opportunities for blacks in the inner city to go to college, for free. Once we quit denying the real problem, which are the way the people in the community act and think, we can start to work on the problem. Not more excuses for this behavior, that makes me sick, honestly. It's 2011. as Americans we need to admit our problems and work on them. @bondservant4Him north philadelphia has sections which is predominantly black and other parts mostly hispanic. other parts like south/west philly are mostly black. northeast philly is the most "normal" part of the philadelphia besides center city.
