Dame Judi just did that same production not too long ago. Still sings the same in that deep sexy throaty voice. Check out her solo in Nine on the stage. It is her at her age on top of the piano. They begged her to do it.
Apparently people at the stage door regularly thanked Judi Dench for going on even though she had laryngitis! Not realising that that was her normal singing voice
The venerable Judi may not be much of a singer but it certainly isn't every actress whose careers have covered so versatile a range of roles - from Sally Bowles to Queen VIctoria !
BTW, I doubt she sang Mein Herr as this was not part of the original musical score, but written for the Bob Fosse film of 1972
She is still sexy or they would not have put her and Sophia Loren in Nine with all those young babes. Believe me if you meet her in person she gives you the chills.
This is a good one she is doing in London 2010 Midsummer Nights Dream and the tickets are getting sold out she did it in early years and it will be great to see how she does it now for the second time.
Dame Judith has always been a favorite of mine for her classy Anglo presense... now to see her as a femme fatale is the raspberry icing on the cake! GO JUDI! ;-)
HOLY CRAP the stage version Cabaret was FILMED?! WIth Boris Aronson's sets and Patricia Zipprodt's costumes and the original London cast! Wow why the hell didn't Broadway film and videotape their shows to preserve them? The only record of Lotte Lenya's Frau Schneider is the cast recording and photographs. Shame on Broadway and the Unions!
This is one of the greatest moments of my life. It's been impossible to find a recording of Judi as Sally, so I guess this is all the better it will get. Haha.
Is this way before Bob Fosse got hold of it? Is this the original score, which I have assumed is Kander and Ebb? In Noel Cowards diaries he wrote he saw this on Broadway and it was superb, it makes me wonder how similar and different it was to this. thanks.
Yes, this was several years before the film and was based on the Broadway version which was quite different in storyline and style from the Bob Fosse movie
Hillarius I love to hear her sing with her cracked voice. She is one fine talent she can do any part play any character. I wonder how she pulls the feelings out for each individual person on stage or movies.
Love Judi Dench. I had NO idea!

Seems these days everyone expects singers to sound like Beyonce. Broadway is made of characters. This is a character performance, and it's perfect.

have known the recording for decades - but this is the first time I have seen any footage
many thanks

It's great to be reminded that there are many ways to play a character. Liza Minelli was fantastic, but she was not the only Sally Bowles.

It's very relaxed. More like a rehearsal than the night.

This is fabulous! I have the CD, but it's great to see it on video. Is there something wrong with
the sound (breaks in a couple of places) or is
it just my computer? Doesn't matter...it's great!
Thanks you very much for posting it.

Who played the Emcee?
EricMontreal22 2 years ago
If I heard correctly, he's played by Barry Dennen, the same person who played Pontius Pilate in the 1973 version of Jesus Christ Superstar.
