I agree it's his version of the song however you will get people who will compare one from the other you get a lot of critical comments in opera it was roy's song and will alway's be however i like to hear different singers interpretations an example of an excellent cover was"House without windows" done by Ray peterson which was a roy orbison song also.cherrs gazza uk
Roy Orbison's voice goes up 1.5 octave in the last part off the song. That's the reason that so many artists fail to do a decent cover because they don't have the vocal range. This is certaintly not a bad cover but it lacks the unique ending..
Exactly. If you're performing a 'cover,' it's your own interpretation isn't it? If you sang it the same, it would be identical, wouldn't it? It is a good version, although I'm not a fan of Roy Orbison.
@Kittielips i find a place for the likes of roy,JT and brian hyland in my life.they all have so much talent.that said,i think i can relate to your choice, roy had only 1 #1 ---pretty woman.all the other stuff never did that well.sooooooooooo, what now?
@ILoveJenni47 certainly Roy Orbison did the definitive performance of this song, BUT to overlook, or dismiss the CHRIS ISAAK "Only The Lonely" is absurd, and an utter injustice. Roy would have applauded the Chris Isaak treatment of this classic, because Roy was that kind of guy. Chris always exceeds the expectations of mere song-addicts. That's what Chris does, plain and simple. He rises far above the "pretty boy", and "Lady-killer" labels, and delivers the goods.
@minotauroazul Yes, Johnny sings very well but what I try to say is that "Only The Lonely" is an "one off kind" song because of the structure of the song and most of all because of the end of the song that ends with a cristal clear falsetto. If you take that out of the song all that remains is a avarage song.. That is my point that I tried to make.
lovely pure and clear voice of Johnny, simply lovely

As a tribute artist for the past 20 + years I have to say Johnny Tillotson made this, his song. As the big "O" did to his many covers. Great stuff!!
