Off to go on selection in August, from reading some of the comments on here I think you need to get something through your skull: You can join if you are french but you have to assume the identity of a nation such as belgium, Swiss or Canada.
Second 5 years is the basic contract, you can apply for French citizenship after 7 depending on your performance. However this could be subject to change soon.
Also: it's not an easy life, getting through the door and through selection is hard enough

But I was just interested what you think is the definition of special forces. I mean, the FFL are not the regular army. Well... who told You that FFL are special forces?? This is normal army, they have special units like GCP, but they are few. Legion Officers say that legion is nomal army , not special forces. Do some reserch over interenet,
for example see documentary movie "Warriors of the French Foreign Legion", it is on youtube.

@Troooper2001 Do some research on the internet? I've been living in France for 10 years already, and I have been in the FFL for 5 years. From 2001 - 2006. Now I am in the regular French army. I can tell you the FFL is NOT just the French army. It's a special devision of the French army. A select group of 8.000 Legionnaires. It's very hard to join the Legion. They are send the first to the worst places on earth. If they have done their job the regular French army joins. How do u call this?

Well thats true that french send legion first, and thats not because they are "special" as u wanna call them, thats because if things work out good, the credit goes to french army, if not?? well few forigners got killed, no big deal. @Troooper2001 Ok you got a good point here. The FFL are expandable. The French government don't even report them when they die. But I was just interested what you think is the definition of special forces. I mean, the FFL are not the regular army. It's much harder to become a Legionnaire than just a soldier in the French army. The FFL do the real fighting. They are send to the worst places. Dropped out of a plane in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.

In my opinion special forces are small commando units, great trained, great equiped. Desiged to do certain missions, like hostage rescue, assasination, placing bombs, working in small groups. Like US Delta Force, British SAS, Polish GROM or Formoza.
By the way I allsaw think about appearing at Fort De Nogent, or Albagne.

I was in the US Marines and was around Legionnaires acouple times and bs aside......They had beer we didn't and 2 or 4 beer can get you feeling good when you haven't had any in awhile in the desert.
