I grew garlic from Stop & Shop here in N.E. and it was hard neck. I just got a new batch for this year and again it;s hard neck and massive bulbs. Seems S&H sells the hard neck variety even though the soft neck is more viable for a chain retailer.
Wow your garlic is huge, mine is about 1 3rd the size of that ( each clove) I've just started growing mine, but the shoots are up and its june, so i don't know when it'll be ready ( i'm in england) so its pretty cold, should i move them in for winter?
Actually I disagree. I was wondering about the relative merits of growing hardneck and softneck garlic and this video has helped me decide to try harneck.

He told us nothing in this video, any idiot can break a bulb into cloves, it is also obviouse WHY you need to break them into individual cloves. This video was pointless, just watching an old man break apart garlic.
It's not that obvious, i wanted to plant garlic in my garden but i did'nt know there were two kinds of garlic and that i needed to plant individual cloves...
I agree. Although I have always considered it a given that the cloves need to be seperated, it's a shame that there are a multitude of people who don't have the exposure to assume that. When we live in a time when our food production is so far removed from the table, there needs to be info out there that states what some would consider obvious.

Also, soft neck varieties store much longer than hard. Soft neck stores for 4-9 months where as hard neck stores only 1-4 months.

@BarbaraThatcher Soft neck garlic does well in warm climates, hard does well in cooler climates such as Ontario Canada.
