If ROH just had better production values, they'd be taking off. They like to keep their arenas dark though so they don't look indy, but instead their shows just look dark and hard to hear. They didn't even light Hammerstein all that well and that's a gorgeous venue.
Yeah but by keeping the arenas dark they become somewhat unique. Not many promotions turn the lights down at their shows. In their early shows ROH used to keep the lights on and they looked just like IWA-MS.
Well, up until ROH got the new production, their shows looked like shit being dark. They were unique, but not in a good way. Doesn't PWG occassionally dim the lights and I think Chikara does it when they run shows at the Arena.
Not sure about PWG, I haven't seen any of their stuff in awhile. I know a few years ago they kept the lights on. But yeah Chikara dims the lights, so does CZW. But I'm pretty sure ROH no doubt started the trend. I think JAPW does it too now, I know they used to keep the lights on most of the time.
@Anglefan12 I beg to differ. I watch ROH because I want to see good wrestling and don't care who wins because I like both of them. There are lots of people out there who share my view.
@darkpatriot85 so, if 2 guys, with no personality whatsoever, just went out and wrestled in a clean and sportsmanlike match with no character or cheating or anything whatsoever and made it look as much like a "legit" sporting competition you'd like it? I really doubt that. If so, you're in the minority. Most people like stories. Stories are what makes a good pro wrestler.
@darkpatriot85 so wait, people who appreciate emotion and story are idiots, but people who just want to see two people in a predetermined sport make it look as competition oriented as possible are "smart"? See, where I come from, people who don't identify with and who are generally seen as socially awkward are autistic. Cool moves are about 1/100th of what pro wrestling is about.
@Anglefan12 look at it this way, would you rather see a guy do five moves over and over again and throw his back out (Batista) and call himself a great wrestler, or would you prefer a guy who does combinations and isn't afraid of getting seriously hurt?
@darkpatriot85 I would prefer a guy with charisma who puts together a story in his match, so whether that's by doing 5 moves (Jerry Lawler, Harley Race, John Cena, Bret Hart) or if it's by doing combinations (Shawn Michaels, Bryan Danielson, Misawa) I don't care, as long as they don't bore the shit out of me and just do random moves (shelton benjamin, Tyler Black) then they're good.
@Anglefan12 I'll give you that part. I just get sick of guys who are overly muscular guys who can barely move from all the steroids. I want to like the WWE but they've once again fallen behind on the times. Shoot-wrestling is what's popular now, at least in my circles.
@darkpatriot85 But see, WWE doesn't even have that many overly muscular guys. There are a few, but nowhere near as many as were in the 80s and parts of the 90s. You have guys like Punk, Jericho, Mysterio, Taker, Danielson now, and a lot of guys with different builds. There are a few like Batista, but with Cena, I think he's pretty good in the ring. He's got a simple style that tells pretty good stories and he sells his ass off.
@Anglefan12 They are starting to realize that now. But what about the guys who can't wrestle? The fact that they don't really address it directly does bother me. However, I can see they're starting to phase out some of the huge guys for something more practical. Now they just have to shed the crappy gimmicks.
@darkpatriot85 "can't wrestle" is completely subjective. Some people think a good "wrestler" is someone with a vast moveset, others think it's someone who can do everything perfectly. To me, a good wrestler is simply someone who gets his match over, if that's by 2 punches, a boot and a leg drop, a russian leg sweep, a elbow, a backbreaker and a sharpshooter, or a million headdrops.
@Anglefan12 You have an answer for everything, don't you. I'm tired of seeing "same old shit". Actually, what gets me is the fact that most of the WWE roster just sees it as a job; no heart, no passion, just paycheck.
@darkpatriot85 I disagree, you can't possibly have no heart or passion when you are killing yourself 3-5 days a week year round. Just because they don't do head drops every week like the indy guys (who also have a lighter schedule) doesn't mean the don't have passion. Who are these guys who you think don't have passion?
@darkpatriot85 Cena has no passion? so, a guy who finishes a match with a herniated disk has no passion? A guy who ALWAYS wanted to be a wrestler doesn't have passion? A guy who not only does more shows than any wrestler on the planet but also does more appearances has no passion? I'm sorry but that's just fucking stupid. I think you're bias towards the "muscle" guys. Which is a typical bitter dumb indy fan opinion.
@Anglefan12 Bitter and proud of it. You're a WWE mark aren't you? I find that muscle and power wrestling BORING! They're super safe and no one stands out. The shoot-wrestling/high flying style ROH and their counterparts offer is more exciting. Also, I'M NOT EIGHT-YEARS-OLD!!!! Us indy guys are what's keeping the industry going because when Cena turns into yesterdays new, we are years ahead of everyone else when it comes to the future. Take your version of passion and stick it.
@darkpatriot85 stop using the word mark. The supposed "smart" marks are what is killing wrestling. Instead of having a broad sense of what's good and seeing why certain skills are used you all just bitch about the WWE. Cena is GREAT at crowd psychology. A hint, he WANTS you to boo him. It's why he stays so goddamned corny and why he keeps it simple because it gets a better, louder reaction. Even the king of the smarks Meltzer and Alvarez say that. I appreaciate ALL styles of wrestling.
@Anglefan12 I want to also, but when this is all they show it's hard to get behind it. When you come from the Attitude Era, you're used to seeing something happen all the time. At least I still watch it every now and then. Don't even get me started on TNA.
@darkpatriot85 well, the attitude had very little actual wrestling, was more of an extended jerry springer show, but it was still wrestling, just a different side. I agree, we should stop, I love all wrestling and wish more fans were like me (sounds arrogant I know). I just don't see why people can't just accept different styles, whether that's mainstream fans accepting small guys, or indy guys accepting big guys.
@Anglefan12 I'm glad we finally agree on something. I think the indy guys, this is just a guess, don't like big guys because they're being shoved down our throats. Example- John Cena before rap album, commercials and "The Marine" badass. After: no one likes him except for the kids. I guess they need someone to look up to but after last monday, who knows.
@darkpatriot85 here's the way I see it. Cena actaully does put on good matches, whether you agree or not, his selling and emotion and storytelling is really really good. He's a good lookin guy who is safe in the ring and is willing to promote the hell out of everything, that's why he's the face of the WWE, because he sells. That's the bottom line in wrestling, that's why it's "the business"
@Anglefan12 Without a doubt. People don't just go to shows for the hell of it. The way I see it, compared to what I first saw, I think the bigger he got the more watered down he got. When was the last time he had blood covering his whole face and he was barely able to walk out after a tough victory. You'd think that would be a good message; don't give up. Maybe I'm just being too critical, but that's what happens when you see too many Japanese wrestling shows.
@darkpatriot85 Well, i personally hate most current japanese wrestling because they kill finishers and all sense of believablility. They don't care about selling or telling in ring stories for the mos part anymore. With cena, the reason he hasn't been blood soaked is because they're PG. Which I'm cool with because it's the natural cycle of things and if someone thinks the WWE sucks because it's PG, they need to rethink wrestling. blood and cussing doesn't make you a good wrestler.
@Anglefan12 I used to think it sucked because of PG, too. Then when I started to watch indy shows more, like Chikara (who has PG written all over it), I rethought my position. One thing about the Japanese, they do come up with some really creative moves and spots. When it comes to the story it depends which promotion you watch. The older ones don't care about story but some of the newer ones do. Look up Dragon Gate.
@darkpatriot85 No no, I don't mean like a storyline, I mean like an in ring story. 99% of the NOAH juniors don't sell or tell any sort of story in the ring. They DO come up with some awesome spots, but after a while I get numb to that and really don't give a shit. Dave Meltzer gave the 2006 dragon gate 6 man 5 stars. It wasn't close, a 4 star spotfest that is now outdated. An in ring story is what makes a match timeless and good, not a "oooo" spot that is topped in 2 months.
I do like the occassional spotfest, but to me,a spotfest doesn't do a whole lot for me.I mean, how many flippity headdrops can you see before it's just another variation?Personally,I honestly think John Cena is a top 5 worker in the world. My theory on how good a wrestler is is this"how well do they work their specific audience?"Basically, if you do flipity head drops and it gets over, you're good.If you do 3 moves but pose and tell a good in ring stoyr, you're just as good if your'e just as over.
@Anglefan12 I don't really mean spots, although they're fun at the climax of the match, I mean maneuvers and holds. They come up with really creative stuff.
@Anglefan12 You know, why are we fighting to begin with? We're both wrestling fans and we don't need this. You like what you watch and I like what I watch, lets just leave it at that because I feel like a dork doing this.
