  • the reason they only counted the white people is because that's the only triumph within this disaster XD, "We have successfully eradicated yet again three thousand people from the gene-pool". They knew even then that we needed the asians... (not meant offensively by the way, just the joke)

  • 4-7 hours..? doesn't seem worth the hassle of those hypothetical extra couple years you get... oh well, if I die young of too much sleep then at least I'll have been a well-rested person, and look pretty in my coffin... I've come to the conclusion that it's totally worth it.

  • "We're making Stephen's pants!" Classic Sean.

  • 4-7 hours sleep? I feel hard done by if I only get 9!

  • Jo does not like Jimmy.

  • why did the fires come about? a flame?

i dont get their point scoring system :\

  • I can't wait for this to come out on DVD!

  • I am very curious to know the sources used for the 4 hours of sleep a night statistic. After doing a 2 second research by Googling "recommended hours of sleep" and checking the first two links I am left with the definite conclusion that for adults it should be from 7 to 9. Also, writing this at 3 am and having to wake up at 8, I know that I will inevitably feel like shit. Check and mate QI, you have been called on your lies.

  • @sirLEVITSKY I imagine it's people who NATURALLY only need a few hours sleep a night who live longer. I don't believe it would work for the rest of us. I mean, I sleep 10hrs, if I cut that down to 4 I wouldn't be able to function lol

  • @sirLEVITSKY hang on...you googled and the first two links allowed you to come to a "definate conclusion"?

  • @geckowithcamo That was what I hoped to be a joke.

  • Why the fuck do we not have shows like this in the US?!

  • @SirDruhHu Cause your government doesn't want i guess

  • The quake in New Madrid, Missouri, canNOT count, because Missouri was not in the United States in 1812. It was an affiliated territory, but it was not a state.

  • I've been watching QI for about a week - never seen it before that. This is brilliantly awesome! Stephen Fry is my new hero. Of course, this show wouldn't work here in Canada. After editing it would be about 1 minute in length. Cheers for posting these!

  • Well...i dont think ive ever laughed as hard as i did watching this full episode...i need to look into this series.

  • @hourendous42

    waheyy, another convert >:]

  • @gloomyoutlook So am I!

  • @hourendous42 Cause Jimmy Carr is in it.... Would have been even funnier if David Mitchell was there xD

  • I'd hate to only get 4 hours sleep,I feel rubbish if I get less than 7.Surly sleeps good for you as your systems running on minimum so less wear on your organs and doesn't your body repair itself while you sleep?

  • @BenPN1000 I agree! I feel shit unless I get like 5 or 6 haha

  • I mean, that's a stupid causal conclusion to make: even Stephen said it himself, people in earlier generations died earlier because of other reasons - just because they slept longer than us doesn't mean that sleeping more makes you more likely to die earlier. There are so many studies that show how detrimental sleep deprivation is to cognitive function....

  • @bemoreunique He is confusing correlation with causation.

I wonder though if there actually is such a finding under controlled conditions (well, as controlled as possible in a study of this nature). Perhaps Stephen merely mentioned that people of older generations slept longer as a random and quite interesting fact.

  • U know ppl use caffeine to stay awake... U stay awake better if u never have caffeine rather than topping up on it to ward off caffeine withdrawal. Got it on Qi ( I think...)

  • i just went 2 nights with only 4 hours of sleep and i feel like i'm dying now

  • New Madrid has the accent on the first syllable, Ma' drid, and not an "ah" sound but as in the word "mad." When it happens again, it will be devastating! It rang church bells on the east coast because it wasn't in rock as in CA. It made the Mississippi River run backwards and then forwards again. It killed an unknown number of natives when their villages fell into the river. It liquefied the clay soil in circles that can be seen today. It was in the winter of 1811-1812 incl severe aftershocks.

  • The research on hours of sleep needed is poor, so it is illogical to rely on it. People vary in their need for sleep depending on many factors such as genetics, age, stress, health, exercise, and ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. America is a sleep-deprived nation that relies on caffeine and trying to catch up on days off. Mythbusters showed what happens to one's skills when sleep-deprived. One might say that road rage, added stress, and accidents are a risk when a person is tired.

  • Stephen looks really good in this episode. Hubba hubba.

  • instead of going to school everyone should just watch Q.I!

  • I didnt get the miner joke about thatcher :(

  • @fielong17 I'm not sure of the details (I wasn't alive) but during Thatcher's reign all of the miners went on strike because of some law she put forward I think. Watch Alan Davies Teenage Revolution and it explains it, it is on youtube somewhere.

  • @fielong17 In 1984, Thatcher's government started closing down coal mines. The miners who were members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) went out on general strike across the entire UK for a year. The police were regularly sent in to break up the striking miners and pitched battles used to break out between the miners and the police. Eventually the miners were forced back to work, Thatcher declared victory and the mine closure programme continued. It's on wiki if u want to know more :P

  • @swanseajackthe3rd thank you sir!

  • If you live longest when you sleep 4-7 hours a night, and less long if you sleep 8 hours, I guess (regularly sleeping 12-18 hours at a time) I'm probably going to die about next Tuesday.

  • they really should get some PROPER cheerleading in the background - like tumbling and stunting - not just some dancing

  • @gloomyoutlook wow. i really didn't know that! thanks for the reply :) (and the uploads)

  • hmmm...how come my school still teaches it's the rictor scale?

and they never explained how stopping people smoking on a plane actually reduces air quality!!! how?

  • @scamrasc It's spelled Richter...and probably because your school is underfunded...

  • @armegeddis oh i do apologise for leaving out the h, and my school has been consistantly one of the top 5 leading schools in NI for the past 10 years, from which i just came out of with a's and a*s in chemistry maths and biology and am now preparing to study veterinary science - the single most competitive course in the whole of the uk and ireland - at the university of liverpool, so please do not attempt to imply any kind of inferiority of intelligence on my part. it makes you seem like an ass.

  • @scamrasc the momentum magnitude scale is in fact an improvement of the richter scale and it is not used for smaller earthquakes. learning the richter scale is the bases for understanding the concept. the mm scale is based on a difficult abstract notion of seismic moment. they're doing nothing wrong in your school!

  • @scamrasc And all of that is DEFINITELY not showing off, and DEFINITELY does not make you look like an even larger twat

  • @scamrasc Great. Now we know that your head is firmly lodged in your ass. It's a pity that you have all these amazing credentials, yet can't seem to muster up the energy to use a capital letter at the start of a sentence.

  • @scamrasc They teach the Richter scale to school students for the same reason they still teach Bohr's model of the atom - it's a much easier way to understand the principles when you're only that age.

And they do explain it - stopping people smoking means that they don't clean the air in the planes as often, because the smoke was an obvious pollutant that they wanted to get rid of, without smoking it's less obvious that the air isn't as clean.

  • @scamrasc

Re the smoking on planes: it's because when smoking was allowed they used to pipe in clean air. Now that smoking is banned they just keep recycling the same air. Hence the headaches, DVT, etc.

  • @SanTelmo1981 reminds me of portal 2 'you're not breathing real air, its too expensive to pump down here, we just take carbon dioxide, freshen it up a little and pump it back in' :P

  • He said "Madrid" wrong. It is pronounced "Mad-Rid" instead of "Muh-Drid." I grew up in the area of the New Madrid fault line during the time that everyone was predicting the next "big one" and we had so many earthquake drills and earthquake preparedness classes you would not believe it.

    Thanks for posting these @gloomyoutlook.

  • @sjbodell Well in Spanish it's Mah-drid. And it was a former Spanish state. So I assume infact he was closer to the proper pronunciation.

  • I walk to fifth and market every day o.o;

  • thanks for posting :)

  • He could, he really could. But if he said it, the retard alarm would go off.

If it didn't he could still claim it was his idea.

He's an evil genius like that.

  • Sean couldn't think of California???

The bit about Stephen's pants was brilliant!

  • @ihply0106 No, he didn't day California on purpose. He would have lost points by saying CA or San Francisco

  • @ihply0106 he didnt want to get buzzed

  • @ihply0106 'twas so the buzzer didn't go off.

  • @ihply0106 he didn't want to say where so that the siren wouldn't go off. that's why alan took the heat for him and verbally answered what sean was physically doing.

  • @ihply0106 no ofcourse seaon could think of california he just didnt want the thing to go off.
