Wonderful performance! Dido and Aeneas fell deeply in love, but the gods called Aeneas away to fulfill his destiny in Italy, and Dido was left heartbroken and alone. In her despair, she built a funeral pyre and committed suicide atop it.Tragic love...
I like this video, even if some of the choreography brings the term "Human Movement" to mind. It's the 21st Century - perhaps we ought to encourage artists to keep performances relevant, rather than as museum pieces. Terms like "post-modern" are increasingly meaningless today. Thankyou!
@kingseanthefirst Nope. The woman who played the Diva was actually a model that was the girlfriend of somebody who worked on the movie. They voiced her over with an actual vocalist who wasn't this person either. Sounds a lot like her though. I loved that movie so much.
shame for the camera work - should have a lot more wwide shots so we can see what they were doing with their whole bodies and with the spavce on the stage. here they have tried to make it like a lame-o hollywood romance. disappointing.

The orchestra plays beautifully, Dido is pretty good, but Belinda's English is strange.
Didn't know this work was supposed to be a Ballet.
I'm confused about the dramaturgical intention. I can see that Dido has a dancer double and that both of them are expressing something hysterically (psychologically speaking) but there seems a divorce between the music and the choreography. The latter is cleverly rehearsed to resemble improvisation.

Some very fit bald guys are scurrying about with some athletic young women and, now and then, somebody picks up somebody else. Then they all go to sleep.
I'm not usually a fan of modernism but having just seen a truly horrid version of this opera (in traditional dress and with the traditional location) on the BBC I thought it was just naff but this combination of song and dance brings it to life and I've completely changed my mind about it. Fantastic choreography.
Speaking of dancing the first minute was the best part in this ! Also the camerawork is fantastic. Beeing really IN the scene does it. It defenitely shows the dancer as a human beeing in all its facettes. The choreography is sublime, goosebumps all over me !
Purcell will only turn in his grave when he is as small-minded and blinkered as you are. I am always wondering why poeple are arrogating to adjudicate upon what is right in there opinion and what is wrong.

Performance sounds very nice..... continuo good. The dancing is a total mess.... rediculous in fact. Where did they stage it? in a lunatic assylum? I like the chipped paint in the big room.
I was deeply moved by this production of "Dido and Aeneas"...the music is in my body as I performed as one of the witches in Mark Morris' danced opera...very different but I am older and away from that world now...tonight was a cathartic moment in my development as an older dance artist.
dido was 'shot' with cupids 'arrow' so she would fall in love with aeneas, she couldnt help it. it was the plan of Venus, aeneas' and cupid's mother, and Juno (queen of the gods) as they feared for aeneas. the only problem was that they didnt tell Jupiter, and he got angry and sent aeneas after his destiny leaving dido alone.
I am impressed! The dance is fabulously creative, I just love the combination of buto-like smoothness and expressiveness with the perfect synchronisation, not to mention the integration of dance and song in the performance of the very same artists. Creating a good coreography for a preclassical piece is really something!
Just saw this production in Brussels. Let's be honest : it is simply brillant : voices, dancing, scenographic, the orchestra (Akademie fûr Alte Musik). This is a must see.
Sasha Waltz told she didn't have the opportunity to take care of the video editing, so it's a mess to them too. Sad. The piece should be seen live, they play it here and there still.
Bonito.. pero asta los cojones de ver audiciones para mis examenes... 2 de baxillerato es extresante!! dios!! Pero LA representacion de Dido y Eneas wapa wapa aunque en clase nos la pusieron de otro sitio y mejor!! It's good!!
Beautiful dance, truly, but it brings off much of the power of the words of the TEXT, I feel. And Dido sings out of tune (too high), I don't know if it is due to her movements, but, she lacks an important dimension with all this continuous wave of gestures she has to do.
I also thought it was really beautiful: one the most original recent interpretations of 'Dido' I've seen. I'd love to see the whole thing. Many thanks for putting it on. My only reservation was towards the end of the clip, where 'Anchises' valour, mixed with Venus' charms, how soft in peace and yet how fierce in war' could have been much more strongly interpreted in the music. Most musical interpretations really exploit the strong word painting in the score.
the air "of she visits this lov'd mountain" is probably the most incredible part of this masterpiece performance - the singer sing it and at the same times she shows the lyrics for this mouvt. with her hands as if for deaf people! that's the most unusual opera-ballet idea i could imagine, and i adore it! strongly recommend it to everybody!
In 1997 a girl called lauren was walikng in a forest and then a she just dissapeared no one ever found her untill 2000 when a yoing girl called Mary found her body and markings on her chest saying: I wasnt pretty enough" and now you have read this she will appear in your mirror saying your not pretty enough and kill you. by the way the girl called mary died shortly after.

Then they are being "modern." What is POST modern about the performance?
There is no irony, no quotes from earlier dances, no self-reflexive qualities....It's just modern dance.

the dancing style suits this opera, except for the running in the begging :/
The scenery should be better, after all it's a baroque opera, no matter of the new production, this just says we didn't have any money left.
