fofao should've won best setter. brazil is the world champion and a team doesn't get that far without the best setter... i think, as commentators said, any player from starting line of brazil could've won mvp. for me it was paula or sheilla or even jaqueline... i don't know about mari... disappointed at fofao not getting her award just before retirement. she deserved it and this was her time.

the last award japan got was for her setter takeshita. in my opinion it's impossible to award the best setter because you can't scale how good a setter is. so the fivb counts what is countable - the number of sets in running and standing aswell as the faults. like i said... i don't see what that tells about the setter qualities. takeshita just usually get this award cause of the play-style of the japanese team. they defend the ball often which means takehita get several chances to set.
you can actually tell how good a setter is. usually, a good setter knows how to confuse the blocker or give the ball to the spiker positioned in the area with shorter or less capable blockers.
on best libero it's not different either - you count the digs that helped keeping the ball alive and how many times he received properly (ball goes directly to the setter) you could ask what means "properly" - indeed there is a little space of interpretation but nevertheless the japanese libero was by far the best (by the way, there was a case in the world cup 08 that the statistics said yuko sano (jap. libero) was best but anyway the italian one get the award).
