  • l've been there...

  • This is what i love about Grainger, where he pulls this stuff from. Like the start of Lincolnshire is completely different to how it ends at 1:06 - yet somehow it all makes sense, wow.

  • nice!!! i just played this same arrangement in highschool. Even without the 3rd and 5th movements it is an amazing piece

  • and excellent song fort Collins high school is playing this piece of music the baritone part that im playing is hard but so worth it

  • Wow! Nailed the woodwind sextuplets in The Brisk Young Sailor. As a studend, I have to say that the second movement of this is the greatest conducting experience with my high school class I have had thus far.

  • 4:33-5:15....

    VISCIOUS CLARINETS.

  • May I ask why you might have skipped the third movement? Was it due to lack of instrumentation?

  • @lukachoo It wasn't my call what or wasn't included...it was the conductor's choice and I don't know what his reasoning was behind his selections. There were many other songs performed at this concert, so it might have been due to time constraints. I just recorded the performance.

  • @RRPiccolo most bands dont play the 3rd movement because it is just too hard to play beautifully so most bands just skip it. Especially version A with the high piccolo and soprano clarinet solo.

  • louden lots...

  • i played this in high school, my favorite song.

  • Played this my sr yr of hs. played picc and 1st flute. willl always remain in my heart as my best performance on picc. Went on as 2nd yr 1st picc in STATE of AZ!!

  • 6:15 - end. Oddly similar to themes from Green Bushes, don't you think?

  • What is that guy doing at the end??!?!! Who is that guy????!? Why is he walking right in front of the band at the end of the last movement?????? What???!!?!???!?

By the way, fire safety rules!!!!

  • @davidverchick Sometimes people are just oblivious, or they don't care. He could have gone behind me, but apparently chose not to.

  • Lost Lady Found! :D

  • This is spectacular! Thank you.

  • I was in a drum and bugle corps this summer (the Blue Stars - involved in an organization called DCI) and I still always appreciate concert band music, our college wind ensemble is playing this piece, thought I'd look it up, Fantastic =)

  • @chaosdude14 That's great, I love DCI! Wished I could have been in one myself, but I play the wrong instrument. :)

  • My wind ensemble is playing this piece this year. It is very challenging, even for the euphonium and baritone, which have several solos.

  • Grainger is SOOOOOO awsome! I especially love Horkstow Grange

  • I love the trumpet solo at 2:52

  • the river ridge high school wind ensemble played this. it was a magnificent piece. and grainger made it a challenge for me. he loved the sound of basson so he allways made that part tough. but still. a lovely piece :D

  • This is my all time favorite concert band piece. The many contrasts of sonority and mood make it always fresh and interesting to hear. I never tire of it. I am a string player (cellist) who loves concert band music. My Dad, who was a flautist, conducted the Army band during his stint in the Illinois reserves back in the 50's. He was "drafted" into conducting the band because he was the only one there who knew music! I heard a lot of band music as a kid because of him.

  • Where, of Where, is a concert-worthy piano solo, or duo-piano, arrangement for this landmark masterpiece??!!

  • As a band director, this is one of (in my opinion) 4 pieces that ALL band students should play at some point. The others include both Holst suites and the English Folk Song Suite.

  • @aelon1 Life is no fun if you don't. Like never tasting chocolate.

  • @aelon1 Holst, yes sir!!!!

  • @aelon1 We are playing both the Holst suite and Lincolnshire Posy this semester, and I must say, I agree!

  • @aelon1 I agree. Problem is that this piece is much harder than the 3 that you just listed.

  • our Wind Ensemble is playing this piece for the spring concert.... Grainger is truly amazing. Every song has some sort of surprise or change. There is never a boring moment.

Your performance of it was great.

You performance of it was great.

  • Where can I find out what grade this arrangement is?

  • @saxophonesuperpowers where i live it is a grade 6 i believe

  • @saxophonesuperpowers where i live it is a grade 6 i believe

  • we have to play libson as a flute addition exert for high school band next year, this was very helpful, fantastic sound, even though they are outside where sound tends to be greatly diffused.

  • Wonderful phrasing throught enabled the band to move into and out of chaos twice--and smoothly at that. The finest rendition of "Lisbon"on YouTube!

  • were playing this for high school too but only the first 3 parts. its pretty hard on the alto saxophone

  • my highschool band is playing some of the movements for festival this year

  • Sounds great! And a very difficult piece!

  • i love the brisk young sailor....the clarinet part is amazing and so is picc<3

  • I'm from County Durham (UK). These folk melodies, which are very familiar to me, are from Lincolnshire (UK).

The composer/arranger is from Australia (British parents but became US national).

I'm curious to know if this is a U.S. or Royal Air Force Band playing - and where did it take place?

I must say it's a polished performance and very enjoyable.

  • This is the US Air Force Band, playing at the Air Force Memorial, near the Pentagon in Arlington, VA, just across from Washington, DC.

  • @Muckybrass

I played ans studied this piece in college. Lincolnshire Posey was composed as an arrangement of folk tunes that Percy Granger collected when he went around the countryside throughout parts of the UK. This is a US band playing the piece, it is very popular among more accomplished Wind Bands in the states.

    I love this piece

  • movement 4, or the sailor, is so fun and a challenge especially on picc or flute

  • I played all six movements as a member of Ohio State's concert band many years ago. This performance is just as good as our's was. The principal woodwind players are great in this group!!

  • What was the reason for skipping Rufford Park Poachers and Lord Melbourne?

  • cuz rufford park poachers is hard. but idk why lord melbourne

  • Some movements were omitted because this an outdoor summer concert...a light relaxing evening.

  • My high school is going to play this this year, and im so scared, haha. It seems fun though, challenging :]

    Clarinets<3

  • Hey for all you haters...this was an AWESOME performance...did you hear the quality of the runs in the Brisk Sailor done by the woodwinds??? BADASS!!! WOW

  • I'm always amazed by the quality of military bands, I always forget how good they are.

Also, in contrast to what some people have been saying, I think that the outdoor noise enhances the performance.

  • o.O what happened at 4:00? that isn't the music i remember... sounds like somebody was playing a half step up...

  • WOW, youre right...thats pretty narsty

  • Thats in the music.

  • I play bari sax in my high school band and we got to go to china this spring. and play 5 shows in bejing and this was by far my favorite piece to play. this brings back so many memories of that unforgettable trip

  • This might be the best performance of this on Youtube, as far as I can tell..

  • OMG I am too much in love with the piccolo. The blend is so remarkable... It got me a bit teary eyed

  • they didn't do "the brisk young sailor" or "Lord Melbourne." that kinda sucks but at least they did "the lost lady found" which is my favorite movement.

  • im pretty sure they did the brisk young sailor.

  • 4:32

  • We played this wonderful piece in the fall of 1964 at the Un. of Iowa. I'd never heard it, and was absolutely thrilled. It was sooooooo much fun.

  • at 1:36 I love the 2nd movement

especially in this recording at around 2:00 the sounds happening around give it a nice effect

    I least I think so

  • sounds beautiful

  • Our band played all 6. Beautiful piece!

  • aw why did they only do four?

  • TACET for trombones 1st movement.

  • Masterpiece for band

  • i agree....i think the horn trumpet part in the first mvmnt is is my alltime favorite part in the history of band music!!! period!

  • Horkstow Grange, especially the climax, is the most beautiful band music ever written (in my humble opinion)

  • im done with this movement O.o It's so boring for percussion. it sounds incredible in movement 4-6, otherwise yeah. It's kills for percussion, although woodwinds and low brass kill in this piece. Nice sound. ^^

  • My band played all six for high school and got all superiors. I love this song, but they left out the third movement, which I like the best. Good job though.

  • Yes! Our band played movements 1, 2, and 6. Overall superior. Horkstow Grange is my fav movement of them all. these pieces are catchy.

  • West-A? We played those three movements of this. I agree.

  • One of the best concert band songs ever written!

This and Armenian dances Part 1 and 2 are the best!

  • My band played movements 1 2 and 3 from lincolnshire and Rondo from Third suite at concert festival. We got straight ones! I absolutely love these pieces!

  • I love lost lady found and lisbon.

  • So this is what its supposed to sound like. My band is playing this, so I want to hear it. But we are playing Lord Melbourne also. But Lisbon and Lost Lady Found are probably my faves.

  • Alright, Im listening to this because my high school band is playing this, and I want to hear how to really play it.

  • Wow....Lost Lady Found was really fast. Still good though.

  • This is amazing! Shame it didn't include Rufford Park Poachers and Lord Melbourne, though. Still awesome!!!

  • Lord Melbourne is my favorite.

  • No third movement? Lame.

  • This is how it is suppose to sound like.

  • If only it was in an building with good acoustics rather than open air...

    It's still great though.

  • So Great! Thanks for Posting!!!

  • You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!

  • Still one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever played :)

  • the brisk young sailor is still my absolute fave

more fun to play than listen though lol

  • OMG I play bass clarinet in this song and the first movement was so hard with the fingering and my director took the music and I cant practice Im so mad so if there's anyone who knows the notes for the begging of the first movement I will greatly appreciate it.

  • i absolutely looovvee "Lost Lady Found"

  • I love the bass bone at the end of The Lost Lady Found!

  • Nice Bass trombone during at the end of The Lost Lady Found!!

It's amazing how Grainger took recording of people singing the folk tunes and made them in to symphonic pieces. Amazing.

  • I've only listened to Lisbon. Awesome. Simply Awesome. And OUTSIDE no less! WOW! Really excellent performance. Was as good as the Eastman. But when the Horns reach their peak, somehow you can tell it's Airforce! That's not bad though! Just different. ( : GREAT GREAT GREAT! Really good job at holding the tempo down, keeping the reigns of that horse pulled in tight. Beautiful. Well done!
  • I can't believe they left out movement #5, that was the best part!

  • This is one of my favorite symphonic pieces of all time. I played it in HS, ~4 years ago. The beginning of the 2nd movement is my favorite part.

  • Some of the movements don't lend themselves well to either outdoor venues or (especially) outdoor crowds. Even doing some of these outdoors is really nice.

  • I'm dissapointed they didn't do the complete work. This is a fabulous recording. It sounds like the original recording by Frederick Fennell.

  • what a shame this group had to play over a lot of outdoor noise. great balance of sound. it's amazing that you can hear every instrument in this environment.

  • You know this group is superb when they can

achieve such a wonderful sound outside!!

I can listen all day long.

    Thank you.

  • who is the conductor?

  • CPT Michael Murray.

  • Of course superbly played by the great US Air Force Band, but I wonder why they didn't play all the movements of the Lincolnshire Posy.
