  • This is fascinating. You could always read a bio of the actor/actress, but it's so much more interesting to hear them tell it. Bea Arthur was a very talented lady and entertained many people for decades. Thanks for the laughter, Bea.

i agree i used to want to be a lot of these people ,and sometimes i still do, but if you step back you can see that you would only be an imitiation never the real thing, and what's the point of being an imitation when you could be an original!

  • I attended Bea Arthur's Memorial service on September 14, 2009 in NYC. It is interesting that Bea denies joining the Marines in this interview. Her sister Kay spoke at the Memorial and said in her remarks that Bea did join the Marines for a brief period in her late teens.

  • Beatrice "Bea" Arthur (May 13, 1922 April 25, 2009) was an American actress, comedian and singer whose career spanned seven decades. Arthur achieved fame as the title character Maude Findlay on the 1970s sitcoms All in the Family and Maude, and as Dorothy Zbornak on the 1980s sitcom The Golden Girls, winning Emmy Awards for both roles. she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance as Vera Charles in the original cast of Mame (1966).

  • her voice was low --but she was classy and so funny to watch on tv! ( watched the reruns for first time lately)bless you bea!!

  • I love Bea Authur! She's just great. I"m in my 30's and I loved her work growing up and watching reruns.

  • She is like.... the female Professor Snape. -.-

I love her, though. She's brilliant in The Golden Girls.

  • Hahaha, that's brilliant!! Funny, but yet, true as well! ♥

  • Great channel, great to hear from these legends and Bea had the most brilliant comedy timing.

  • I am frequently referred to by strangers as the as the male Bea Arthur. I cannot think of a higher compliment.

  • I used to lay in bed with my nanny (1980's) that died in 2000 and watched golden girls and have been truly affected by this woman ever since. it was sad to lose such a telent.

  • I very much agree. "The Golden Girls" happens to be my very first memory of television -ever-. We lost one of 'The Greats'.

Bea was a hell of a woman.

  • for those of u that think Bea is reading this...please!!! just tell us all how wonderful she was.

  • I LOVE BEA nothng else to say......

  • Bernice Frankel? Wow, Bea Arthur was Jewish. She acquired the name Arthur which was derived from Aurthur. RIP Bea Arthur, you ruled the 1970s with an iron fist.

  • * tear *

  • She was glowing with beauty even then! RIP dear lady!

  • Thank God, they did this interview so she is going to stay with us forever!

  • A very big thanks from a Greek fan! Bea Arthur is one of those people God send to us to make our lifes happier. Once her mission in this life has been accomplished God decided to take his angel back... I personally owe her endless time of laughing and emotion especially in very tough moments of my life. Even though we 've never had a rerun of Maude and The Golden Girls over the last 20 years here in Greece, they still remain my favourite sit comedies of all times!

  • I love at the beginning how shes like "Do you really want to know" about her real name.. and that she changed it "as soon as she heard it" hahaha Bea Arthur is sure one of a kind <3

  • lol " you r'e so gotdamn young

  • RIP Bea

  • fantastic woman.

    big loss.

  • You'll be missed very much

  • Bea was such a real and "say it to you how it is" woman, she will be missed.

    God bless and R.I.P.

    Love you.

  • R.I.P Bea Arthur! A comic genius!!

  • GOD BLESS YOU R.I.P

  • So interesting to hear about her early days. Though I had hoped she'd named herself after that other great comedy actress, Jean Arthur (1900-1991). RIP Bea.

  • I respect Bea alot but she is tough in a lot of her interviews

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean by tough. Bea carried herself so gracefully and she was so very classy. But Bea was private and didn't particularly enjoy interviews I don't think plus she was shy ...

  • I'm not sure exactly what you mean by tough. Bea carried herself so gracefully and she was so classy. But she was shy and very private therefore I don't think she enjoyed interviews very much...

  • she died april 25 2009 so sad

  • The "Hit Parade" I recall, and I was a kid then, starred Dinah Shore. Got that Bea? Have no idea why this interviewer didn't lay that out there for you. You're not turning into an old...mumble..mumble..babe...You're the Ace babe! Thanks for everything and the great comedy and commentary !!

  • I loved Bea in Golden Girls. She was my favorite Golden Girl.

  • Beatrice Arthur was/is/will always be a legend.

  • Thank you, JAIDridge86. When I asked Bea out for lunch it was BEFORE SHE PASSED ON. I didn't even know she was ill.

  • I just wanted to say, how much I loved watching this show ( I still do btw) when I was going through a rough time in my life having lost someone in a accident. I never got a chance to tell the actresses how much I adored them and the show, but well B. now knows how much I did, and god bless her and the entire crew of Golden Girls for the wonderous laughs it gave us all.

SIncere Condolences go out to her family, friends and fans of this amazing humanitarian -Vegetarian, of which I am as well.

  • OMG i love her.. rest in peace.. i still see the golden girls every night.. she doesn't seem that happy here; like other actresses when interviewed.. shes very real!.. love her!!

  • I just wanted to say,

in 1992 I lost my companion of 15 years, and getting through that tough time, was right there on the boob tube for m e, 'The Golden Girls'. I remember laughing so hard I would fall off the couch.

    I miss you so much B. :)

God is so lucky to have you back in his ever loving arms, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, for the laughs, - that kept me going in that time of grief.

My heart felt condolences to her friends and family.

  • Bea, without a doubt, one of the funniest women in the industry. I bet it will be a long time before we see another "Maude or Dorothy". You have literally made me laugh so hard I cried. I hope you knew how much pleasure you brought to so many people. Well, at least now you can make all the angels laugh. God bless you and your family. Your passing is truly a loss to many. Thanks for the memories!!!

  • That is so true!!! God has her now, but thanks to the popularity of her wit as well as her works (especially on Maude and The Golden Girls), she will always be enjoyed by future generations of people. The entertainment industry has lost another wonderful person, but Heaven has gained another one who will keep the humor going!

    -Matt

  • We all will miss you...

  • Very funny video- I love the Golden Girls! As a child I almost never missed an episode when it was broadcasted on dutch television. The news that Bea Arthur past away yesterday has upset me a lot. Nobody delivered sarcastic lines better than her. She was a delight to watch!

  • I will miss your lovely movements on Golden Girls and Maude. I loved to watch these shows and learned a lot from Bea's speaking out. I loved her so much and will think of her in heaven.

    God bless her.

    Vivian Blanco

  • Rest in peace, bea. You were one of the greatest.

  • Oh, Bea. I'll never forget you. I love you so much. Thanks for the laughs. Thanks for everything. Simple words cannot express how I feel right now. Love Always, Joey

  • aw, sorry jungzanima73. you'll never get that date with bea :(

cheers to an amazing career, ms. arthur.

  • Thanks to Bea and condolences to her family and the remaining two Golden Girls. Time takes the physical from us but recordings mean artists like Bea will forever live for future generations.

  • so sad to hear she died :*( RIP bea.

  • Seriously, I got so sick of the "Bea Arthur's a man" jokes over the years. She was one of the funniest women ever, and I loved her even more after discovering that she thought South Park was one of the most brillant tv shows ever created.

  • Rest in Peace Bea......Say Hi to 'Ma' xxxx

  • Just read about her death on wikipedia. First thought was "she followed her ma." Condolence from germany and rest in peace, B.! Thank you so much for the Golden Girls!!! I embrace you.

  • I can tell you from first hand knowledge that it's not easy preparing for interviews. Especially, if the interviewee has a few years on you. So unless you're very well researched it's hard to see everything.

Fortunately Bea hit her stride in middle age. Hollywood LISTEN UP & give the more seasoned actresses a chance. Right now Disney is leaving the still beautiful, middle aged Cindy Morgan out of TRON . Not every movie needs a young starlet. RIP Bea...you left your mark.

  • RIP Bea, you will be greatly missed!!! Love you forever!!

  • I loved her as a person and she was my favorite Golden Girl!

  • aww missed her birthday by a little over 2 weeks. RIP!

  • I think she is still alive.

  • her voice got deep as she got older....she must of smoked ciggs

  • RIP Bea.

  • rip Ms. Arthur

  • Sad to hear she died today....she was one of a kind. RIP Bea....

  • She was, and still is, amazing R.I.P. Betty White is 5 months older than her though, so I hope she keeps going.

  • Thank you so much, Bea, for a thousand and one wonderful moments enjoying your wonderful talent. I already miss you so.

  • where did Bea grow up on MAryland's Eastern shore??

  • May you Rest in Peace Bea. The world has lost an exceptional lady and heaven has gained a wonderful spirit. Will miss knowing you are in the world. You were one grand woman and such a talent

    :0)

  • May you Rest in Peace Bea. The world has lost an exceptional lady and heaven has gained a new spirit. Will miss knowing you are in this world . Miss Bea you are a grand one! :0)

  • It's as if a friend has died. Rest in peace.

  • holy crap! RIP BEA!

  • When I read my paper's online title "Golden Girl- dead at 86, it was like I immediately thought of Beatrice. Gawd, last year Estelle died....I loved grandma lol

  • i think how odd like estelle was the youngest out of all of the girls....and played the oldest and mother of dorothy...and she died first....and dorothy was her daughter and dies a yr later =(

  • Estelle was not the youngest. Rue McLanahan is about 10 years younger than the other three ladies. Not that it matters, of course.

  • Bea Arthur has Died today.

  • it's sooo sad she passed away...R.I.P. Bea

  • So, uh, Bea, you want to go out to eat or not? I'm close to New York City. I'm not gonna' wait forever. Can you buy?

  • I don't think the people who are rating this as a "poor comment" realize that this post was made two days BEFORE she passed away.

  • Hey, lil' ms. Bernice Frankel. How 'bout lunch? I've loved you on T.V. for about 25 years now, don't you think it's at least time we had coffee? I'm young, handsome, buff, gay (I'll change 4 U) and very, very modest. You were the best golden girl. If it weren't for you they would've burned down the porch.

  • Is 35 young in gay terms?

  • Oh, what a talent Bea is! Smashing false stereotypes of women back in the seventies, that they were to be submissive creatures without any thoughts or ideas! She deserves so much credit and is so brave. From the assertive, bombastic"Maude" in wild, suburban, "Tuckahoe", to 'chillin' in warm Miam in "The Golden Girls", then off sailing to her more recent WHITE HOT performances on the stage, well, I think it's safe to say that Bea has left soooo many impressed and speechless!

  • Bea Arthur RULES! I don't care if she drinks at whatever bar, or drinks whiskey, or smokes cigarettes.

    WHO CARES! SHE'S AWESOME! Period.

    I LOVE YOU BEA ARTHUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's too bad it's out of sync.

  • Bea Arthur one of the great female comics!!!

  • Ah I love Bea! She's just too awesome

  • Oh Ms. Bea.....thank you....thank you....thank you

    bob

  • This interview really sounds like her one-woman show. The CD of the show is very funny and entertaining.

  • her name is Bea - B her sister is Kay - K, lol letters of the alphabet

  • does anyone know fo a way to send a letter to her or any of the golden girls cast?

  • if you find out let me know please!!!

  • What a great interview, and a wonderful story teller. Ms Arthur makes her answers interesting, not just a one sentence answer. The interviewer either has learned to speak up or Bea Arthur has better hearing than most.

  • she is a great interview and she looks great. wish i'd seen her broadway show a few years back.

  • This is a fantastic interview.

For her age, Bea is very much in tune and responds well to the questions. Their are actors who are middle aged that have done so much work it is nearly impossible to recall their history and all they've done. They hardly ever watch their own work.

Bea remembers quite a bit. I'm impressed. I had no idea she was as old as she was. She looked good for her age on Golden Girls.

    Acting is work. I doubt I couldn't recall a baked sale I organized when I 25.

  • she clearly lived her life healthy and smart.. she is well preserved

  • Healthy? You have never seen her booze it up like i have. LOL!~ Bless her heart!

  • yeah i've heard she enjoys a drink at the gay bar every once in awhile...

  • Listen to her voice... That's all whiskey and cigarettes.

  • so you must drink whiskey and smoke cigarettes

  • not true... she's had that voice all her life... now it's more scratchy due to age... but watch Maude, watch her in Auntie Mame, and you'll notice her voice straight away.

  • I just did the math...Ms. Arthur is 86 years old....I had no idea she was that age.

  • so she was 78 when this was filmed

  • Wow...86. My gosh

  • Love Love Love this woman!! I am a huge fan od The Golden Girls!! Such an amazing person!! Love you Bea!!

  • TV Legends, would you please post the episode with Della Reese?

  • did she have any plastic surgery because she looks really different here?

  • It's called old age!!!

  • i think it's her hair not being big like it usually is, haha, that really makes her look different...but she's always herself to a tee, and even though i don't agree with some of her values i respect her, she has that unique ability that makes you find her so credible because she's never hypocritical.

  • OMG thank you for this soooo much-love her!

  • She is so great, she is my favorite in The Golden girls.

  • Mine too!

  • Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love the Golden Girls! =D

  • My birthday is feb the 14th valetinesday. Witch

celebrity is also been born on that day

  • Bea Arthur is the only celebrity I know who shares my birthday.

I looked for years and couldn't find anyone who shares my birthday.

Needless to say, I became even more interested in her than I already was after knowing someone I like has the same birthday I do.

  • well when it's your birtday, it's also one million other peoples birthday as well...not by year of course.

  • she doesnt look

as good as some of the other girls

    but

she still has a wonderful sense of humor "_

  • what year was this interview?

  • 76lovelight76, It was in 2001. she says the date right at the start.

  • lol.."your so goddame young"

  • Dear Bea! You remind me very prominent Russian Jewish actress Faina Ranevskaya, very much. Same acid, like they say, caustic humor and huge talent! My dear lovely super actress!!! I wish you long time to act, be strong and work as long time as you can handle! With all my respect to you. Al.
