Who really cares where it is...Music is personal and it takes me to my times of motorbikes, cutoffs and metal...When the free world existed...They were great times...I used to listen to Al stewart all the time amongst me Motorhead and saxon and stuff...
this song reminds me of the story my mother tells me of her home. scotland. im american by birth, and proud of that! but pure musical talent comes from the otherside of the pond. hands down!! the beatles,al stewart, andy sommers, sting, alan parsons, eric woolfson, jimmy page, joe cocker.the list could go on and on. thanks to them, we have great music to listen to. thanks for the video!!
Its verses like these that have haunted me all my life since I first discovered Stewart back in the 1970s. No other artist can roll history into a beautiful song so well.
Al described the song once "we all have our big toe resting on a white line on the border of nuclear war" or something close to that. Is there any more talented artist on the face of the earth?
This song made Peter White famous for playing the Spanish guitar so well. Check him out on Youtube. His music is excellent and the melodies are wonderful.
Problem is this song isn't about Mexico. It's about the Basque separatist movement in Spain. It is a beautiful song. Stewart is a poet. the guitar work is remarkable. It's Spanish, not Mexican.
this song is definitely in my top all time 5 fav list. i remember hearing this as a kid and i remember saying i need to know this song. thanks for posting it.
Fantastic song, my favorite by AL. Reminds me of sitting at the cantina across the street from Hotel California (NOT the inspiration for the Eagles song) in TodosSantos with my toes in the sun drinking the BEST margaritas in the world.
Probably the most underrated song of the century. Profoundly metaphorical lyrics, electrifyingly hypnotic music, and smooth-as-silk vocals combine to give me chills down my spine and tears in my eyes. This song puts me in a different place, time, and dimension, a positive place devoid of unhappiness and suffering. Al Stewart is a musical genius. This song definitively proves that Al was not in it for the money and did his own unconventional thing. Think of Al Stewart as the anti-Justin Bieber.
Thank you so much....Your comment is what this is all about for me...and, it truly is a small world when it comes to the great connection of hearts through the music and beautiful places..
@sherrylynn70 You are right. You took the song and what it meant to to you. What it made you feel and think of. It's an individual thing. That is why I believe MTV was a disservice to music appreciation. I made a video of the Eagles song James Dean with James Dean clips. Of course Youtube won't let me upload it but I get where you are coming from.
@vivian2gin Then why are you here? This isn't a super well know song, so you obviously already knew about it and searched for it. You actually took enough time to comment on this video like that. I can't wait until all ignorant people like you die very necessary deaths.
This is from a time when music was incredible and it took you places. Oh how it takes me back. I still have this album and it's one of my favorites. Life in the Seventies was great :)
Yes, we are all standing on the border....exactly what this song speaks to me..Thank you for getting it....we are all on the edge somehow...each day so precious...thank you for taking time to listen and comment..
That is what music is...a personal journey...we each have our own interpretations...Mexico, Spain...whatever...They are all Spanish descent...Truly no big deal...
wait a minute.... i heard in the song a reference to Spain (the spanish border) and i heard a reference to Africa but no reference to Mexico....so......what's with the mexican flag and mexican map?????
I LOVE Al Stewart!!! You have great taste in music sister-gull...:) The video paints the perfect picture to go along with this wonderful song. I enjoy playing "Broadway Hotel" on my guitar. It is my favorite A.S. song. Reminds me of my high school prom for some reason. Thanks for the memories on this cold and snowy Saturday!
I love all those vivid colors. Makes me want one of those original Tacos you speak of. And maybe a Margarita or twelve. Keep up the hard work to make up for the rest of us....who are stumped.
Been there several times.. Nice video and song.. I have a friend that lives in minn. but her and her husband own a little casa in Teacapan, a little fishing village about an hour south of Mazatlan.. The artwork you show in the video is almost exactly like her paintings of Teacapan... I spent a week there and got to enjoy true Mexico.. Not the tourist towns.. I will send you a couple of pics of her paintings..Thanks for sharing :)
Missed this one! I really like Al Stewart. He is uniquely himself... Lovely song and pictures! Hope you are okay, friend! Have been busy myself, but have missed you!
Beautiful song and video. I always loved "Year of the Cat" and had forgotten this great song. Wonderful Sherry:) especially like the next to last picture....
I've always loved this song. These pictures are amazing, someday I'll get there too. Sherry, perhaps you and I will collect shells there! Come with me! This is BEEEutiful!! Thanks for sharing your talent with us all.
W O W - You have choosen such a wonderful song - the first 4 photos in your amazing video, made by your beloved sister, are very beautiful.
You have edited your video in a great way, because the wonderful pictures and the great singing and guitar playing really brings us in an Mexican atmosphere !!!
We loved the music very much, well done Sherry, our compliments to you for this great job.
I have enjoyed spending some time with you this weekend...and, really enjoyed sitting on the porch drinking some java with a friend..you are thought of, Mikey with lots of love♥
Nice, nice, very nice Sherry! I too love this song by Al Stewart, I need to get into him more as I don't actually own any of his stuff. Excellent video interpretation, blessings to ya - Scotty W.
Awe Scotty..It is so great to see you this evening...I made the big move, went to the amazing class reunion, earned myself my own new used pc, and just got connected again...my sis went on a cruise and I got compelled to play again..I am living right on Blackwater Bay at the mouth of Yellow River..the bg on my page is my new backyard..I need a Camera!!! Didn't mean to write my bio here ;-D will be in touch soon..thanks, friend♥
I really appreciate this, Vickie...you are one talented gal..and, a blessing to this circle of amazing people I have met along the way...God bless you and yours alwas, Vickie Keep shining that light, girl♥
Who could ask for a more perfect response...I appreciate that so much...spellbinding and wonderful are the perfect words to describe "On The Border"..what an honour it is to have a place to express my interpretation for these great classic tunes...Thanks so much for your time here.
Annie, WooHoo is right...I am So happy to see you here...I think I am settled in for those long winter nights...will fill in the blanks later..just woke up and saw you had been here...I just got back online...means so much to see you here...any petunias left? It is punkin time now...where does time fly? Sweet Dreams..Dreamboat Annie♥
A super interpretation of a GREAT tune from one of my all time favorite albums! I need to get busy and make a new music play list! (My other one's full!)
How cool is this...to be back in touch with the most special friends a gal could ask for....this was another one of those compelling moments...it means so much that others were as touched by this great song as I was...we are so blessed to have a place to play and connect like this...looking VERY forward to coming for a visit soon...is summer really gone??? I am not ready to see that bus in the snow again...I have not been to one SmokeyGoodness gathering..whaaaa!! HI LEVI...see you soon! ;-)
Wow...means aLoT to see you here, eric! I did watch your most recent production...I simply adore your work and vision for this planet...your videos are over the top...full of the peacefilled message that we have carried in our hearts all these years...I appreciate and embrace the light that you shine on us who are blessed to have met you here..I got lots of catching up to do over in your secret garden..PEACE♥ Thanks so much for you time.
i love al, saw him a few years ago performing in a small venue in camden...not only is he a great singer./songwriter, but he has a dry self depracating wit which was very entertaining.
Another great production, Sherrylynn. Music and images fit together beautifully. Looking at the map of Mexico I can see the towns that both my dad and step-dad came from (Leon and Saltillo). My grandfather was born in Nuevo Laredo and other relatives came from Durango and Mexico City. Great visual vacation you've taken us on. Can you share the name(s) of the artists? Once again, simply beautiful. All the best. ~ Mark
I love that you shared the story of of your grandfather and your dads...so, I am assuming you know how to cook up some real authentic South of the Border cuisine...very cool..and, you got me on the names of the artiste...I was feeling guilty about not including their names, and am working on that now..I found one of them...will let you know..I appreciate your time and comment so much..
