He said his other project, Wikia, just profited, not Wikipedia. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia and is non-profit, running on donations, while Wikia is advertised based and is for topical encyclopedias, such as tv shows and the like.

The two are not the same.

I kind of feel sorry for the companies that used to and still sell encyclopedias, like britannica. They have absolutely no chance of surviving a free and larger encyclopedia.

Comparison of articles about the two:

Britannica says:

about "Britannica": almost 2000 words;

about "Wikipedia": almost 1000.

Wikipedia has:

article "Britannica": over 7500 (& featured article);

article "Wikipedia": almost 8000 words.

So the best place to learn about britannica is still wikipedia... RIP britannica :(

Wikipedia is a great source of information and the only reason teachers don't want us to use it is because we would have all the information we need in just one place and we wouldn't have to do any other research. Wikipedia can be edited by people but the information is accurate.

You should try reading any academic reference library. One of my fields of expertise is audio, and the kind of misleading stuff you'll find in their AES academic library from the 1960s, some of it has had me rolling around on the floor.

But that's what's cool about academia and not so cool about wikipedia. Academia keeps the wrong answers intact. It's a different thing.

Wikipedia is certain one of the most impressive ideas to pop out of the internet. I love that it promotes the interest in the concept of verifiability. It is sad when one utilizes a single source claiming 'it must be true, it's written'. Citation is provided in Wikipedia offsite to point other sources and therefore more complete and separate sources; its a link page of interest by interested parties bringing unconfirmed but dynamically verifiable focus to a modern age of information overload.

Most wikipedia articles have many references that can be tracked down, not to mention further research sections. It isn't always complete, but wikipedia is a good way to get info together quickly, due to how much gets compiled right away.

Should I even mention how easy it is to get a publisher to let you publish a book? Some publishers check their content less than wikipedia does, which is pretty insane. Any information that is incorrect can be double checked by cross-reference.
