I want to remark something. My father was a navy officer in the U.S. navy during the second world war, and my mother brother, my uncle, and too more coussins died being in the german army.
It was a Canadian Spitifire from 412 squadron piloted by Charley Fox that put an end to his career! He straffed and hit Rommel in his staff car. He never fully recovered.

@xATrueFanx Rommel was wounded when his staff car was strafed it is not known who the pilot was as there are at least 3 claimants, it is possible that a unwounded Rommel might have responded differently to developments and results might have differed, we will never know.

My late father was one of the garrison of Tobruk who were taken prisoner in 1942,hIs regiment the 2nd batt Cameron Highlanders (scottish) were the last to surrender and as they marched three abreast into the pow compound ,general Rommel (as he was then) stood in his staff car and saluted the scots soldiers,my father never said a bad word about him.

Rommel fought in Soška fronta ( Slovenia) in ww1. He saved Austrian troops there ( a lot of them were slovenians). Thanks Rommel in the name of Slovenian boys that surived in Soška fronta ( the greatest and biggest battle in the mountains ever in the war history) and came back to their famelys... including my great-grandfather.

@roaringwaterbay Field marshal was a rank that was abolished after WW2, I think. Every modern army had that rank, but some used different names, like Vojvoda in Serbia. Field Marshal was the highest rank in the army.
@Silberberg48... Man wusste in "Gutmenschen"-Kreisen nie so recht, wie man mit des Führers Lieblingsgeneral umgehen sollte. Pauschal-Verurteilung wie bei Keitel, Jodl, Dietrich, Schörner usw. ging nicht, dafür war er zu populär.... sowohl beim deutschen Volke, als auch bei den alliierten Kriegsgegnern. Also erfand man die Legende vom erzwungenen Selbstmord! Dass er freiwillig seine Konsequenz als GFM, ob der drohenden Niederlage zog, konnte man nicht zugeben.
Also selbst bei "Gutmenschen" Dokus wie z.B. dem bei Historikern allseits beliebten Guido Knopp kommt Rommel sehr viel ordentlicher weg als andere Generäle. Mag daran liegen das er sich aus Massakern weitgehend herausgehalten hat und in einigen nachgewiesenen Fällen auch Hitlers Mord-befehlen direkt zuwiedergehandelt hat. Trotzdem bleibt, das ein Sieg des Afrika Korps und ein vordringen in den Mittleren Osten wohl den Tod für viele bereits emigrierte Juden bedeutet hätte.

Ich finde es fast etwas hoch gegriffen, diesen Marsch als DEN Marsch von Rommels Beerdigung zu bezeichnen. Schließlich ist es DER Marsch jeder Beerdigung eines Soldaten.

Rommel fought in Soška fronta ( Slovenia) in ww1. He saved Austrian troops there ( a lot of them were slovenians). Thanks Rommel in the name of Slovenian boys that surived in Soška fronta ( the greatest and biggest battle in the mountains ever in the war history) and came back to their famelys... including my great-grandfather.

@roaringwaterbay Field marshal was a rank that was abolished after WW2, I think. Every modern army had that rank, but some used different names, like Vojvoda in Serbia. Field Marshal was the highest rank in the army.

Pauschal-Verurteilung wie bei Keitel, Jodl, Dietrich, Schörner usw. ging nicht, dafür war er zu populär.... sowohl beim deutschen Volke, als auch bei den alliierten Kriegsgegnern. Also selbst bei "Gutmenschen" Dokus wie z.B. dem bei Historikern allseits beliebten Guido Knopp kommt Rommel sehr viel ordentlicher weg als andere Generäle. Mag daran liegen das er sich aus Massakern weitgehend herausgehalten hat und in einigen nachgewiesenen Fällen auch Hitlers Mord-befehlen direkt zuwiedergehandelt hat. Trotzdem bleibt, das ein Sieg des Afrika Korps und ein vordringen in den Mittleren Osten wohl den Tod für viele bereits emigrierte Juden bedeutet hätte.

Ich finde es fast etwas hoch gegriffen, diesen Marsch als DEN Marsch von Rommels Beerdigung zu bezeichnen. Schließlich ist es DER Marsch jeder Beerdigung eines Soldaten.
Denke mir auch, dass ihm (Rommel) das weniger recht sein könnte.

I like the song as my grandfather took me to the memorial meetings of the soldiers who were fighting during the WW and how they were abused by people like Rommel! THose who are still proud don`t want denie the false purpose they`ve been fighting for! @rupiwatch Les mal das Buch ,,1939, der Krieg der viele Väter hatte", dann wirste sehen das die Allierten eine große Mitschuld an diesem Krieg hatten. Das Buch basiert auf Fakten, da der Autor alle Informationen direkt aus den Staatsarchiven aller Kriegsparteien beziehen konnte. Den Deutschen wurde immer viel Schuld eingeredet, die Realität sieht anders aus. Wie heißt es immer so schön, der Gewinner schreibt die Geschichte. Die Aussage hier bezog sich auf den eigentlichen Krieg.

@FrancisJoa Ich geb dir vollkommen recht dass man nichts SCHWARZ-WEIß sehen darf, jedoch zu behaupten dass Deutschland nicht die Hauptschuld hatte wäre unwahr! Es gab einen Stalin der sich wohl kaum von Hitler unterschied und Antisemiten in allen lagern, aber wir haben nunmal nicht zurückgeschossen! Ich bin kurz vor meinem Geschichtsexamen und denk nicht dass mir ein Buch plötzlich die "Augen öffnen wird"! Geschichte schreiben nicht die Gewinner sondern mitlerweile zum Glück wir Historiker!

manche sehen das falsch! er war mitglied bei der NSDAP ABER: hitlers deutschland war keine option für ihn!! er war gegen viele dinge die hitler tat!! z.B: judenverfolgung!! man muss sich überlegen was wir für ein wunderbares Land wir immer noch hätten wäre er damals der führer gewesen!!!

He was a soldier not a nazi maniac.At the end he wanted to kill Hitler.Generals like Guderian and Rundstedt are same case.They were soldiers and they fought for their fatherland not for Fuhrer.Fuhrer killed Rommel.Not directly but he forced him to commit suicide.That was sad death of very brave and intelegent warrior.British respected him as a warrior not as nazi.He is victom of nazi madness.
