  • The port side needed a paint job - bad. What were the deck apes doing?

  • Who was the Captain in 1983?

  • This was my first trip across the pond, I was with the aimd side of the marine helicopter squadron. Germany was a great stop, I think, I dont remember a lot about it other than we had a great time on, I believe it was called Reperbaun Street or something like that. If you were really on this cruise you will remember this. My biggest problem with the Guam was the fact that i went 2 weeks without a shower because they wouldn't work.....no hot water.

  • That was an awesome experiance cruising up and down the river....and we thought the fiords were narrow.

  • I was on this cruise!

  • Thanks for showing this on You tube, I was aboard the Guam for this cruise.

Brings back great memories, Hamburg was terrific!

  • Yep I remember this day as if it were yesterday, we had just come through a severe north Atlantic storm with high seas that tore up the port cat walks pretty bad tearing 1/2 metal like it was paper disrupting our port running lights, Myself and HT2 Bob Halbert were sent up to the flight deck to make temporary repairs just so when had running lights to get up the Rhine river to Hamburg. Boy did we have a good time in Hamburg. I will miss her now that she is no longer with us. HT3 Conklin

  • I remember the storm, a lot of sick Marines on that one. If I remember right one of the LST's lost one of the Bow Hatches and had to go hide in the Fjords.

  • Didn't know there was video of the Old Lady in Hamburg. I think it was about hamburg where we finally thawed out from the "games" in Norway. I got out of the trip back acrossthe puddle I got off in Rota and took leave. Lot of good memories from the Guam, anybody remember what the cruise that went to Guantanamo and Vieques P.R. in 1981 was?

  • @dwodno I got onto Guam just after Gitmo and was on her till March 84 attached to R division as a Hull maint. tech. I too remember this time in hamburg and is sure was fun, HT 3 R. Conklin.

  • yea we pulled into Hamburg and on the pier were a huge group of anti american red army protesters.first time in ten years an American vessel pulled into Hamburg.had a great time there,8months later USS GUAM was in Grenada.doin that....rj

  • This not a Carrier. Its an Iwo Jima class LPH. An Amphibious assault ship used to transport Marines and Helicopters specificaly the Ch46 and Ch53. Get your facts right...

  • Relax pal, I was aboard the guam we did call it a carrier from time to time. Just as we called it a "boat" and someone screams "its a ship"

  • @coolsax64 hey we called it a 'helo carrier' on occasion....

  • @trsidn All right, that works too. What about the Tarawa class LHA or wasp class LHD? Helo carriers too?

  • nice

  • Hallo, mensch melde dich doch mal, ich habe schon mehrfach gemailt!

    Gruß Andreas

  • My step dad was stationed on the USS Guam around 71'-73' he was a YM3. Is there any way to get ahold of former sailors of that time? Cool video.

  • Hallo,

ein sehr schönes Video. Herr Luttner, bitte melden, habe da einige Fragen.

    Gruß Andreas (nightfighter)

  • My Father was aboard the guam in 1969 as Commodores Secretary, Commodore chose guam as his flagship
