my name's victoria and in freshman year in my art class there was one other girl with the same name and my art teacher played this oh god it was awkward
Ray Davies and the Kinks -- what a marvelous enduring group. I was almost moved to tears watching his live version of "Shangri-La" with full orchestra and choir. Maybe PBS should wake up and do an entire program on the intense creative and timeless music of one of the world's great composers -- Ray Davies. "Waterloo Sunset," "Autumn Almanac," "A Well Respected Man," "Victoria," "Shangri-La," "Days," "Polly" -- I would give my right arm to have written one as good as any of these.
Easily Ray Davies most underrated composition, from an album circa 1970. Quite brilliant. Quite wonderful. In all senses of the phrase: "They don't make 'em like this anymore".
i respect the writers and directors who create episodes of how i met your mother for including this song, even though i don't believe i have ever once watched the show
Bought ARTHUR the day it was released way back in 1969; loved it upon first listening. If memory serves me well (and, admittedly, it don't like it did), Rolling Stone named ARTHUR the "British Album of the Year" (or some such). For my final presentation in my college drama class in '69 (upon which half of my grade rested), I recited and acted out the lyrics of four of the songs from the album. Forty years on, it remains one of my faverave albums of all time. . . .
my name is victoria and this just tells me that victoria really IS a beautiful name and i shouldn't get annoyed when people say "oh victoria its such a beautiful name" to me. awesome song i loved it ever since my dad bought it on itunes and showed it to me as a 5 year old :)
The Kinks are like no other band. Their words and music refected the world around them in the 60's 70's. I once listened to this played by the Chesterfield Kings in Cleveland a long while back and I always remember their killer live version of this really cool song. Thanks for posting!
@oldstyleliberal "Victoria" is the best first cut of any Kinks album. I liked it the moment I played it on "Arthur" back in '69. Cool lp with a poster of the Queen herself- and lyrics!
Yes HIMYM brought me here. I was thinking all damn summer that hasn't it been enough years and she should be back from her Culinary program in Germany???
@MrSkate4weed Oh the irony of someone correcting me on spelling when its a grammatical error. Thumps is a word, but yes, you are correct in assuming that my intended word is thumbs. Also, as a television watching prole, I am happy to say that my Honours, Bachelor of the Arts in Film and Television Studies make me a proletariat, then I'm fine with it. I will happily accept any title written by George Orwell in 1984.
@STskittz You might be that guy, but this song (which is pretty Awesome and I can't believe I never heard it before) is totally what ties me over until the next episode. Love the song, whether it be used for the former Queen or for Ted's crush from HIMYM
@STskittz are you even a fan of this band or did you just look up this one song and all the other faggots that have that in common with you voted you up?
@MrSkate4weed "Another product of TV and po..." Shut the fuck up. You talk about pop culture like you're above everyone else, which is obviously not true if your self esteem is so low that you have to insult people on Youtube of all places. Enjoy being an outcast all your life for being an asshole.
@MrSkate4weed I am going to say the same thing for you, except that would be virtually impossible to be any more retarded than you already are. Seriously kid, grow up.
@MrSkate4weed You seem... upset, friend. How about I suggest you drink a nice tall glass of calm down, and then you can go back to being a lonely internet troll.
@MrSkate4weed Yes, the hypocrisy of you laughing at me when you're the only one who has done something stupid enough to laugh at. You're mad kid, calm down and go be a fail troll elsewhere.
Kinks are just simply an awesome band with one amazing album after the next - Preservation 2 a classic - but it's all good !! they went from Arthur to Lola seamless ! turn up their songs - tell yer friends ,...they're the greatest rock band of all time !
I fell in love with the kinks with a compliation CD, and I really longed to get the records so I could have all the material, but I just couldn't find them anywhere. Then I went to this one sale, and I was flipping through their albums, and I saw "Arthur" and all the other 60's albums. Best day ever.
Great Lp... this is defintely a rock opera about Britian, and the days of Queen Victoria.. Hail to the Kinks ... one of the greatest band of all time,. Ray is one of the greatest song writers of our generation.. I adore him.. thanks for the post.. so great to hear this record again..love Victoria one my fav, tracks..
course the Kinks ROCK but this song sticks in my head ~ been working for a lady named "gloria" you see how the mind deteriorates! He's thinking history; I'm thinking work.....KINKS RULE!
Victoria was my first girlfriend's name, back in 1967. In a special place called Islip Terrace ... long ago and far, far away ....this song brings her right back to me, every time.... nice.
I never hear Queen Victoria in this song, only my ex-girlfriend's name. I know it misses the point of the song but I can't help it. I miss her so much and will fight for her, I hope the sun never sets on HER.
@ryanneglect I think I know what you mean - Ray's lead sounds very much like Paul McCartney and the harmonies are very Beatlesome. Great song, whomever it's by!
@ryanneglect That's okay...My mom is in her 60's...I played " You Really Got Me" for her tonight. She had always thought that was the Beatles...she has no excuse, that was her era. haha.
@ryanneglect Victoria, Sunny Afternoon, Waterloo Sunset, A Well Respected Man, all great Kinks songs most people think are the Beatles, because of shit for brain radio programmers that only play Lola or YRGM
The British Empire dragged the world kicking and screaming into modern civilization, rule of law, and a superior culture, whether in Africa, South Asia, Ireland or North America.
I tried to download this classic off of itunes and it wasn't listed. I think that's a crime. Maybe, it has something to do with the two record labels who signed them on - that being Reprise and RCA. I love the way you can hear Dave Davies scream and shout with delight towards the end. He was thrilled to be playing real honest to God Rock and Roll again. I'm not saying that I didn't like "Village Green". I loved that album and still do. This album rocked my socks off when it came out. Still does.
@mikezephyr I don't think the album is really lamenting anything. "Victoria" seems more critical of those times. "Sex was bad / Called obscene", those kindsa obvious jabs at Victorian times. Besides the fact that Mr. Davies was always all about escapism, and the album involves escapes to Australia and SHANGRI-LA.
im more into rock, but i really do appreciate the kinks and the beatles music, they were real musicians- long live thier souls, long live thier music.
My aunt Victoria used to play this all the time when I was little and I heard it on the radio today for the first time in years and had EXTREME deja vu. :D
Bonjour, vous aimez les sixties ? écoutez et podcastez mon émission "le super son des 60's" sur le site de plumfm. You like the 60's ? please, listen and podcast my broadcast "le super son des 60's", connect to "plumfm". Salut et faites gaffe au rock and roll.
Absolutely love Dave Davies screaming at the end of this song. He is so happy to be really rocking again. It was his element and he made it known by his contagious screams. Long live the Kinks. They kan never be replaced.
this is from the greatest kinks lp, some say village green others something else, but this really gets under your skin, still painting pictures with words, still the greatest english band that ever lived, beatles, nah, stones, umm nah, the kinks music will be loved in a thousand years!
@themode2k That's a real shame if you can't appreciate this for what it is. The Fall single is cracking but, like Mark would admit (after spitting at you, growling something incomprehensible and then storming off stage or out the door, whichever is closest), this is the real deal!
@TerryDowne Eh? Why the fuck have people labelled your post as spam? It's a good post.
Maybe you had some Northerners reading your post (English Northerners are generally anti-Monarchy, like myself) or maybe people just didn't realise this song is about Sticky Vicky and their wonderful intelligence had them thinking you had confused this band with the band Queen). Whoever did it is a feckin' cretin, anyway!
To adress the talk about what the song means, for the sake of historical accuracy, its from a concept album called "Arthur (the decline and fall of the Brittish Empire). Its sung from the point of view of a character called Arthur, a carpet layer. Within the context of the concept ,arthur is CLEARLY portrayed as backward, and naieve , but not without sympathy. This (like most Kinks records) is one of the most reviewd records in rock history, so you can probablly easily find 10 reviews of it.
long ago life was clean sex was bad called obscene and the rich were so mean stately homes for the lords croquet lawns village greens vic toria was my queen victoria " " I was born lucky me in the land that i love though i am poor i am free when i grow i shall fight for this land i shall die let the sun never set victoria " " " canada to india australia to cornwall singapore to hong kong from the west to the east from the rich to the poor victoria loved them all
What's not to like, it's the Kinks havin' fun?

My aunt Victoria used to play this all the time when I was little and I heard it on the radio today for the first time in years and had EXTREME deja vu. :D

Ray and the boyz at their best.. This is an album cut like Celluloid Heros. Word Pictures painted by Ray Davies. None better. Thanks for posting.

The album "Arthur" was named after their brother-in-law Arthur Anning who move to Australia with their sister Rose.

My friend told me to watch this... because my name is Viktoria.... I'm honored to have the same name as this song.. minus the spelling of it.

@ViktoriaVanityMonroe I wouldn't be too honoured, our Vik. After all, I don't think you were in mind when it was written. ;-)

themode2k 1 year ago
@themode2k That's a real shame if you can't appreciate this for what it is. The Fall single is cracking but, like Mark would admit (after spitting at you, growling something incomprehensible and then storming off stage or out the door, whichever is closest), this is the real deal!

A great tribute to a great queen, from a great band. Thanks, Ray.

I'll unspam it, if I can.

VICTORIA BC BABY !!!!! The KINKS ROCK !!!!
