This placed the song, for me, closer to The Prom Queen killed by the crazy, wild-haired bag lady.

However, if you are correct and it is a man singing on the studio recording, it wouldn't be the first time The Magnetic Fields, or anyone, have a different line-up live compared to on record. So I guess we just don't know, do we? The lyrics, however, read differently depending on whether you believe it's a man or a woman singing, which is an interesting comment on gender issues.

Actually, I own the album and there's two versions of this song. One with a man singing (obviously Merritt) and the above version, to which the liner notes credit a woman for the vocals.

The name (and theme) of the album is "Distortion" though, so that explains the weird sound.
