Without a doubt the greatest recording of 1937. I was born 3 years later and this was the first record my mother bought for me and I played it over and over and just could never get tired of it. Amazing how it holds up today and still brings some tears to my eyes.
This brings back so many good memories for me. I first heard it in the 40s, and I think it was an Englishman, maybe Noel Coward singing it. But this rendition is perfect in every way. The trumpet is perfect, and the lyrics, dated as they are, are so true.
This is way before my time but I think it's one of the most perfect melodies ever devised. And the trumpet playing is just beautiful... gives me goosebumps every time.
My Mom and Dad were married on July 3rd, 1937.Mom was surprised when I told her that I had a recording of the song that they played on their honeymoon. She sure loved listening to it again. I adore my Mom and Dad...... RIP
This is my husband and my wedding song... we went to Philly for NYr's and they played it that night... and then yesterday went went for a walk and a little candy store in town... and they it was playing there too... omg.. it melts my heart... my husband picked it... as our song... and I just love it.. love it.. love it... I'm a big band person too... but this is the original.... Bunny... although there are other versions from others.. Thanks... :))))))))
The 78 RPM record is 12 inches in size, but this is still the arrangement of the song that was widely published on 10 inch records. Apparently, the 12 inch record was used to allow for better sound - the more recording material you use per unit of recording time, the better the quality of the recording. Anyone using a PC to record CDs or DVDs knows that.
"In 1929 I sold short." What a relevant lyric to today's news, wherein the SEC
charged Goldman Sachs with securities fraud for its purported failure to disclose that the bonds that were the basis for one particular synthetic collateralized debt obligation had been chosen by none other than John Paulson, the billionaire hedge fund investor, who was shorting them.
@scootron2000 Berigan was born in Hilbert Wisconsin, He moved to Fox Lake Wisconsin in his childhood. He died in 1942 and is buried in Fox Lake. Some say he died of alcoholism, others say it was drug use. It might have been a little of both.
thank you so much for sharing this fine talented player. the one and only "unique" Bunny Berigan a true legend. i'm weeping from fine memories. my thanks also to youtube they really are Class.
Actually the original version was Bob Hope singing it to Eve Arden on Broadway in 1936. I saw the encores revival a few years ago. It was the 11 o'clock number.
And plays a fairly prominent part as background/thematic music, in the film "RKO 281" - a drama about the making of the film Citizen Kane, and Orson Welles battle with publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst over this film.
Recorded on August 7, 1937, and probably Berigan's most popular recording as a band leader. In those days, some big bands recorded 12 inch "extended" versions of certain musical numbers [cf. Benny Goodman's "Sing Sing Sing", in two parts] because the arrangements were too "short" for standard 10 inch releases.
i really like this version of the song. i guess it's the original. i like this one and ella fitzgerald's the best of all the different ones out there.
Bunny Berigan was the best. Even Louis thought so. Story is that Louis wore out four vinyls of Berigan's "I Can't Get Started" listening to it over and over. Story also goes Louis wouldn't or didn't like playing this song because he thought it belonged to Berigan! My Dad back in the day saw Berigan a whole lot, as well as all the other major horn fellas of that time, and said Berigan was the best by far, no question! Berigan on Marie is a great too!!
My Father played trumpet in a band back in the 50, I was a little boy and I heard this song and said Dad will you play this song for me and he said Laughting "who do you think I am Buddy Bergin" Still brings back a fond memory,Thanks for posting

The greatest trumpet solo I EVER heard. I have to listen to it once in awhile to
hear that golden horn. Too bad he died young.

Nice to have found this. A great trumpet player and friend of mine who died
recently used to play this on all our sessions to great applause.
Incidently I still have a big collection of 78s (and record player to play them
on) My son of 45 still laughs at the quality of these records compared with
the HiFi he was brought up listening to but I wouldnt part with the memories
they bring me!
