  • great man!

  • Excellent tutorial! Keep up the good work! you are doing a great job :)

  • Hello, I would like to know where the other video is located, you mentioned, about basic recording midi keyboard and setting up . I haven't been able to locate it on YouTube yet. Can you post a link and was it uploaded originally with your same user name? Thanks for your all your efforts. Enjoying your videos. Wes

  • nice work on the floyd......

what vst are you using for the acoustic?

  • @rformidable It's a soundfont - I don't even know why I decide to try and play a guitar track on my keyboard though - I hardly ever do that. As far as quality goes - there are many guitar synths better than the soundfont I used here. In fact, I really was not too concerned about the quality because I wanted to emphasize the importance of humanizing and playing live. You heard how bad it sounds when it was sequenced - the live playing improved the quality more than anything.

  • @ste1438 as far as guitar synths go,have you ever tried 'slayer 2'?

it does decent distorted gits, and if you mess with it enough, you can also get that 'ventures-walk don't run' sound.

but, still it requires quite a bit of external processing, and sadly, the amp modeler in fl10 isn't going to cut it, so you have to use 3rd party plugins. you won't get that 'police-roxanne' attack rhythm sound though, no matter how much compression you apply.

the acoustic gits are horrible though.

  • @ste1438 as far as acoustic gits,a good synth is hard to come by..

i've got this free one i found a while back called 'spicy guitar'...

its not very involved, but it gives you a few controls for pick/hand style, tremolo, harmonics, twang, sustain etc.

yeah, its abit thin sounding, so once again, it requires lots of processing, but it can fit nicely into a mix.

i've found it to work better than many other vst's, but i still wouldn't use it as a lead instrument.

  • @rformidable didn't know about spicy guitar - it's a good one and free - thanks.

  • @ste1438 no prob.....hope you enjoy it..

and thank you for putting up all these tuts..

  • How to line-up the notes? so it is good in rythm when recording?

  • thanx for the good info and tips i'm new at using a midi keyboard on fl studio but thanx again

  • They forgot to tell that you,re doing great ! People are only asking questions !

  • how do you use the built in virtual midi keyboard controller to record notes into piano roll?

  • hey man please help, i got a yamaha MO6 keyboard, with a midi output and a USB host port.

I have the driver and such and he's visible in the input (4times) and in the output (8times) in the MIDI menu. How can i use it as midi keyboard so i can control the piano roll and such with it?

  • This video just helped me fix the problem that slowed down my beat making for months. I can't thank you enough!

  • Hey man I just got a question, I actually have a Yamaha PSR-170 and I have been trying to play my Electronic Keyboard (PSR-170) with fruity loops, as when I hit a key on the piano, it will be hitting a key on the Fruity Loops program with whatever sample I am using on the piano roll. I have followed your tutorial but I have had no success, I am using Win7 64bit and M-Audio Midi to USB Converter. Any suggestions?

  • You my friend, have some great taste in music (Pink Floyd)

  • you have no idea how much time you help me to avoid wasting... Thank you! =]

  • Hi I am having a problem with recording with my midi keyboard. I know how to link my midi keyboard to Fruity Loops but when I try to record music with my keyboard for some reason it does not record. I press the record button but when I play the notes they do not show up in pattern mode or song mode. How can I record the music I am playing?

  • ty, helped me really much

  • if i do this, i can only hear the midi-out on my key board, so i can only put something inthat piano roll. I can't play a song on my keyboard and the song won't go to FL studio.... how to fix it?

  • Comment removed

  • you dont know how much my life is saved now

so much clear understanding wats going on now....

  • Awesome tutorial, THANK YOU for saving my lifeeeeeeeeeee!!!! :D you really cover everything about recording that i needed!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

  • Hey man Nice tutorial but i got an issue recording in fl studio, I have a Akai Mpk61 I was using Reason 4 and 5 but I wanted to try fl studio but my midi keyboard is not recording more than 1 bar It records the first note i press and rest it does not record and also i dont have the option to change the recording to the piano roll instead of the step squencer? can you help me with these 2 problems.

  • @KorayRuthlessvillian it was covered in the video.

  • @ste1438 Im also having the same problem, at around 6:30 u mention not to have the " record to step sequencer button" clicked, i however dont even have that option available to me. My midi keyboard shows up and i works so i think i have installed it properly, I have fl studio 10 and i have the ASIO4ALL. Is there any other way to record without recording directly to the step sequencer?

  • when i try and record it automatically snaps to the grid is there a setting to change that?

  • bloody adds grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  • dude i got a question, why cant i assign play pause and stop, record n shit on my midi keyboard, but i can play them with my computer keyboard! Pls answer, and oh yeah buttons r really strange when i assign them they only work when i keep pressing em and when i let go they dont play no more!

    Thanks in advance!

  • when i use my midi controller to record sounds coming out of a vst using the metronome the song comes out delayed..do i have to fix the buffer please help!!!!!!!!

  • @CROOKLYNSNEWS You can link play, record, stop to FL Studio. Your input devices needs to support it.. Most newer midi keyboards support it right out of the box. Even the ones that are under $100. There is not really much I can say to help you set-up though. There are differences in the way you configure then with every hardware device. You need to look in your hardware manual or get support directly from the manufacturer.

  • Thanks a lot for your help!!

  • Hi, Im using a midi keyboard and the ASIO4ALL function on FL, but when I attempt to record into Edison or simply into the playlist as an audio file, it produces the stereotypical feedback sound that you would get when having a mic to close to an amp. Any ideas? Hopefully that wasn't a retarded description :/

  • I HAVE ASIO4ALL NOT CREATIVE ASIO DRIVER IS IT THE SAME THING?? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!! HOW DO I GET IT

  • Very helpful, thank a ton!!

  • ohh god, u helped me alot ;D

  • I got a problem, maybe you can help me.

some of my notes are playing and some are not.

and the notes that are playing, keep playing the whole time.

do you know what this is?

(sorry for my bad language )

  • You sound like the guy from My name is Earl :D

    Thanks for the video :)

  • please help me out: My keyboard signals (midi or computer keyboard) only adress the different channels (eg. c = kick, d = snare, e = synth, etc) so each key only plays one note for each instrument, can I somehow get it back to "normal mode" where every key is assigned for different notes of ONE instrument??

  • @dawenzi Did you enable omni preview mode in the midi settings?

  • @ste1438 you are the best ! totally worked !

  • hello henyone?

  • hey buddy, i have my korg connected to FL 9 works great!

Question: can i set it up so different keys are different samples? instead of a massive variation of just one?...

    hope that makes sense :)

  • @BRANSCOMBEx Yes the FPC pad plugin is probably the easiest way to do that. start with empty from the preset menu and drag and drop your samples on to the pads. You may have to hunt a bit, but you can reassign the pads to custum keys. Also, You can string all samples in a wav file, export and use sliceX. There is also use Directwave if you want extreme sampling, but the is going to take some time to learn+you will have to register it to do that.

  • @ste1438 oh nice !! I decided to buy a kaoss pad 2nite :) I use slicex to cut samples. i have some sick ones! :) I still dunno how to record more than 4 seconds of recording.. it's odd. I downloaded tutorial videos so i can check them out.

  • i can't record AUDIO ONLY? with my controller? i have an axiom 61 here.

  • hey guys smone please help me... im havin a rely serious problem... I have a casio MA 150 keyboard with a midi out with fl studio . Whenever i press a key on d keyboard a "note off" message comes in fl studio near the upper left corner n whenever i release the key a "note on" message comes. Why is this reverse effect?

    Plz help me guys!!

  • I ve got a MIDI keyboard casio ctk 591, but its piano sound is very bad....

If i connect my keyboard with fl studio, can i be able to play my keyboard with a different piano sound .....I mean to say that if send midi signal from my keyboard....can i be able to use different tones which are not present in my keyboard but are present in fl studio...hope you understand......plz reply soon

  • @casioctk591 yes i use the casio ctk710 and you can use it to play sounds in vst (Sytrus,flkeys,etc..)

  • So if my controller doesnt have a line out, am i fucked?

  • @TheFilmerJonKnukles Line out is only used for audio recording. If you have midi out your fine.

  • Ehi ste...i try another program with my keyboard and it Says "Error Midi input sent a Meta Event" what does it means?

  • when i play a note with my midi keyboard it least infinite :( :( but i can use it for MIDIOUT

  • @8St3fan8 Maybe a sustain button is on?

  • @ste1438 i don't think...i have a sustain pedal conneted to the keyboard but i dont use it....maybe i have to remove it? :(

  • @8St3fan8 That's not the cause - unless it is malfunctioning(sticking). I was thinking that it was a sustain toggle switch that is on the keyboard. It behaves like a pedal, but you turn it off and on. My keyboards have this.

  • @ste1438 where is the previous video? you talk about a tutorial previous of this

  • Very Knowledgeable stuff, thanks for your videos learnt some stuff there i will always remember.

  • please someone help me please!! i have a casio lk-100 midi keyboard.... i bought a midi to usb thing and i hooked it up... everything is recognized on fl studio.. i play something on the midi keyboard, it plays on fl studio. all fine but one major problem.. while i'm playing it, its not in time. its a bit off like.. it sticks like? for instance if im trying to play a piano piece... there is no flow... its all off and out of time and slow... please help???? thanks!!

  • @abu3333 Go to the menu on the left, Click on Options -> Audio Settings. There's a slicer, that's your buffer length, when you put it all the way to the right your sound quality basically improves, but when you play something on your keyboard it will respond really late. You can put it down to the left, you're quality will reduce but the response time will be faster. I've usually set it to 1800 because when you put it real low the sound quality is really really crappy!

  • @abu3333 You most likely need to adjust your ASIO4All settings. If you have it set too high, you get a delay. It it's set too low, you get crackles and distortion. You have to play with it and adjust it, to fine tune it to your computer. The lower you can get it, the better. Try to get it set a low as possible without distortion. Go to "Options", then "Audio Settings", then click the "Show ASIO Panel". Then, slide the bar at the bottom left or right to adjust it perfectly.

  • I'm familiar with recording, I got a Roland A500PRO. Just wondering if you know how I can link my keyboard's play/stop/record buttons to the ones in FL ?

  • @Gazi2546 Yes - you need to assign an MMC command to the buttons. They automatically link. You need to refer to your hardware manual. These are usually set-up right out of the box though. They should be working now.

  • @ste1438 Thanks for your reply, I don't really understand what I have to do now thought because I have no idea what an MMC command is. Do you have a tutorial for this? Or a URL where this is explained. If so PM me please. I have been trying to find this out for ages. Thanks

  • @Gazi2546 No tutorial for this - It's hardware specific. You can program your controls to send signals and messages. You just need to refer to your hardware user manual and look up how to set-up your playback controller buttons. MMC just stands for MIDI Machine Control - witch is the kind of signal that the FL Studio playback controls respond to.

  • @ste1438 Alright I'll educate myself today. thank you!

  • @ste1438 I have installed that application now. I own a Roland A500PRO and I installed A-PRO EDITOR which is the hardware specific application. I can see all the buttons of my keyboard displayed on my PC and I can link them, there's an option where I can choose 'Assign Message' and I can choose 'NO ASSIGN' , 'CHANNEL MESSAGE' etc. but I have no idea where I should link the buttons to. Do you have any idea? I just want to link my play/stop/record button. Thanks for your help by the way

  • when I record from my m-audio keystation into fl studio their is no delay on the sound but my patteren is like a mili second behind and when I quanitize the notes it put them a step behind???so I manually move all the notes over by one piano roll box..how do I fix this??

  • @standsfree Sonnd like your snap resolution is too high. zoom out full resolution and put snap settings on "line" before you quantize and use "quick quantize" for recordings - Full Quantize is for humanizing or adding a groove, but really destructive to repair a live recording. Also be sure the snap settings on the record panel are on "line" or "none" when you record too.

  • @ste1438 Actually that is Zoom in - As big as it can get.

  • I followed what you said, I had that one box checked which would cause it to repeat in the middle of my playing. It still does it though, it loops back while I'm still trying to record something, like there's a limit on what it will record. What am I missing?

  • @Hatterific Use Song Mode and an empty pattern for new recordings. If you mess up a recording make sure you go to edit and "undo recorded stuff" too.

  • @ste1438 Thanks. I got it to work finally. I'm not sure how exactly. My thought is that it was just fallout from having that box checked. Thanks a lot again. Really helpful vids.

  • superb tutorial! i can't wait to start with this stuff.

  • Thank You.

  • What mic do you use?

  • If i play on my midi, the notes lack on following my typings. So all the notes lack :S. Is that because of the milliseconds in the midi controls?

  • @BeatzProductions That is called latency - the only way to fix this is to lower your buffer settings and use an ASIO driver. If that does not work you need to get new hardware. Check out beginner to Pro video number one if you don't know what a buffer or ASIO driver is. I recommend trying to get the buffer length down to about 8-10ms. Anything higher than that, and you'll be distracted by the latency. With a very high latency it's almost impossible to play anything.

  • @ste1438 Thanks for your answer ;)!

i've tried it but the quality wasn't that good, so it's all about switching the buffers all the time if you play on your midi or play your beat.

    peace!

  • PINK FLOYD!

  • great tutorial ste but I have a question for you when you say midi rec and audio rec are 2 different things I only have a midi cable running to my computer through a usb so to record my piano sounds do I have to get like a 1/4 inch to 3.5 mm and run it from my output jack to my line in on my comp as well?

  • Hey man your stuff is great, Im in the process of learning fl studio i no most basic stuff but what has really been bothering me is when i record say a syth line for my song, from my midi.k.b i cant understad how to get it to loop right at the end point, there is always a pause, if it dose not fill the whole bar, i hope you understand and IF anyone can help me it would be superfab

  • @theSCclub - hi. I have the same problem you have. Do not know what to do.... Does anybody have a solution for this'???

  • I NEED HELP !!

WHEN I USE MY PIANO TO RECORD ITS NOT SHOWING THE BARS I PLAY, INSTEAD THE NOTES R LOOPED INTO THE PATTERN ND ITS NOT RECORDING EVERYTHING I PLAY ONLY THE CERTAIN AMOUNT OF PATTERNS THERE R !!

  • it takes me 20 minites to post a 5 minute vid

  • @DJDrumrolls nothing weird with that

  • @TarikProductions haha....no

  • 0:00

  • What is the first video???

  • You cant velocity and link notes, and sustain them and everything in the FL Studio Piano roll...you just gotta figure out...and yes...it takes a lot more time than just playing it and sending it to automation.

  • Make a party...put this video...and take a chug eveytime he says tutorial...

  • Hi Ste, i'me so glad i checked out your vidio, i already knew how to link my midi keyboard up but i noticed alot that when i quantized i would get poor results but the zooming in tip blew me away, genna try it out, neat, thanks your awsome!!

  • hey i gotta thank you so much for this video demonstration! it helped me a lot! i used to not be able to record my midi into fl studio, but thanks to you i am able to now! thank you so much! God Bless You!

  • Hey, I don't have the creative ASIO input/output. I have ASIO4ALL V2 but there is no sound coming out when I use that one.

  • Hey uh, incase you didnt cover it in this video, as I didnt have time to watch it now, could you tell how i can make a filter sweep by recording midi. When I try now, it just records events, which isnt what I need. I want it to record an automation clip.

  • hey, i found it very good that you explained WHY to use midi recording. it helps in understanding all the options fl studio is giving you. thanks.

  • Could you possibly point us out to your first video about setting up MIDI keyboards/controllers? I was unable to find it on your channel. If it's on your tutorial package for sale, I'll go ahead and buy it :) I just didn't know if it was available on your channel or not. Regardless, I'll be purchasing your package of videos VERY shortly. Thanks.

  • @DommyCee Yes, but that video is a bit out dated. It will help if you have an older Keyboard with the "old" style midi plugs. I can't post it here because it's useless to most that have a the "newer" USB Midi Keyboards. If you can hook up a mouse (which I'm sure you can) then you can hook up a midi keyboard. There is no need for a tutorial on that.

  • @ste1438 Gotcha. Indeed, I have the newer type. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it.

  • Great video!!!! Thanks a bunch :)

  • i just started record with interface and key/controll-good-but my metronome records too-plz help. love ur videos

  • Thank you Ste 1438,so much for being so kind,to explain everything so well to us! I really need your help,I'm trying to do this on my own and with your help.I have a question, please when you get a chance answer me.I have connected my Midi recording interface to the PC,through the USB cable and the guitar in my interface and I'm trying to record my guitar in FL. I don't know what channel to open and how to be able to see my guitar in FL. p.s.I have Asio4all driver. Thank you very much

  • Hi! How can I record a chord using a midi keys. Everytime I try to, it's just recording single note.

  • hey that's Is there anybody out there!

  • could you only play vst's how about soundfonts or other sounds

  • How do use multiple MIDI Keyboards and link each keyboard to a different VSTs on fl studio?

  • Hey.. When i try to adjust my audio settings in the fl studio i see something called "Kernel". Could you please advise what is that and how that contributes in tweaking my audio settings.. Thanks!

  • i've installed a akai lpk25 midi keyboard to Fl Studio and the program is reading the device but for some reason i can only play the c5 key with the controller. although i can hear all sounds when i click piano roll with mouse, i cannot hear them when i use midi keyboard. what did i miss or am doing wrong?

  • when i press play to play the music, the music jerks after it loops. I changed the buffer lenght from 50 to 300 and it doesnt jerk anymore but i dont like how the delay when you press the keys. any idea on how to fix the jerking sound without having to increase the buffer length?

  • it was a good vid, but you diverted from the topic!!! now, i dont know the steps on how to actually hook up my key board for midi recording!!!

  • i can only record 16 bars, i watched the vid and read the discipton i did everything u said, but i can only record 16 bars.

    why??

how can i fix it, please get back to me.

    great tut tho!

  • thankz bro this vid was very helpfull =)

  • my midi controller works perfectly but i have a small delay on it, wich is really fxxx enoying ! (if i touch the sound comes a little bit after )

Do anybody knows how to fix it, or why it is like this?

  • @litlekarim33 Same here. It's so annoying.

  • @warkillr31 You need to use an ASIO sound card driver, with a lower buffer setting (10-20 ms). It's not possible to play anything with that delay interfering with your timing.

  • @ste1438 I got it fixed. Thanks though.

  • Great tutorial. Where do I find the midi tutorial that was before this one?

I looked through your other 28 videos and could not find it.

  • Man, that was hell of a demostration! You really did GREAT job on this, sometimes you even "overexplained" some stuff, so thanks a lot for this! If some people still don't get it after such demo and say that it's too difficult, then they got some real issues with programs. And FL studio soposed to be one of the easiest program for creating music...

  • You can use a crap usb/midi keyboard and a laptop for live ...........

  • im having a problem with latency between my midi controller and fl studio, any suggestions on how to fix that?

  • @ste ur a star cant beleive i missed that.nice 1

  • thanks man very helpful vid

i have another problem tho...everytime i use my midi keyboard there is a half second delay time which disallows me to play notes succesfully i have tryed all buffer/latency ASIO driver solutions but to no avail

    PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • @ECG01 Contact your keyboard manufacturer for support. If your buffer is low enough (10-20ms) and your using an ASIO driver - the only other reason for the delay is your hardware set-up. Let me know if you figure it out. it might help others.

  • It won't let me record no longer than 16 bars, I play a lot on paino and I want to make the bar longer how? thankyou

  • @MrJegan121 read the comment left for dsdubs

  • @MrJegan121 im having this same problem ,,how did u fix it ??

  • when i record it only records 8 bars the goes back too the beginning..pls help

  • @dsdubs Turn off loop record in the record panel if it is on. Try recording on a new empty pattern. In the future, If you need to redo a recording after you already recorded something. Select edit "undo recorded stuff" before you start recording. When you want to record to an undetermined length you need to use an empty pattern that is not already in the playlist. Otherwise, it stops and the end of the pattern.

  • @ste1438 omg... I've spent 2 months figuring that out... thank you ;_______;

  • Thank you so much for such a practical usefull video.. I was looking for just little advice about recording in polyphony.. But I had (really don't know why) - that setting off "Record to step sequencer" :o)

  • i cannot tell you how helpful this was...thanks

  • this is sooo advanced, you are describing bad I dont get it dude

  • @affep96 This is not a beginner video - this was intended for some of my advanced subscribers. Sorry, that you found it so hard to follow. I know it was very technical.

  • so does it record the melody i play on the plugin in pianoroll.I mean that if i play like some melody it records it as midi file to pianoroll.

  • Your tutorials are a tremendous help! Thank you so much!

  • I can't Get my keyboard to show up in the input list. My keyboard is a Roland Juno-D Limited Edition, and my soundcard is an Creative Soudblaster Extigy (Yeah i know its old). Im not sure why it dont show up, any idea?

  • @samsote Check this first - this seems to happen a lot.

Your midi in/out plugs: make sure the In plug is connected to Out / and Make sure Out is connected to In. Restart FL Studio if you needed to fix that. Check and see if the device is there, and enable it.

If that is not it - you may need a driver for your hardware. That is the second most common cause.

  • @ste1438 Its conneced Midi our from the keyboard and Midi In for the sound card. Also i did not find AnyV Vista drivers for my soundcard, and had to make a short hack to get it working. kinda.. It seems that the only thing working on it is Sound out. i can not record sond from my mic, and my midi keyboard doesnt show... I guess ill have to buy a new soundcard or a Midi to Usb cabel:(

  • @samsote Midi to USB will get you up and running with midi input, and they are pretty cheap too. Something doesnt sound right with your set-up though.. The midi plugs on your keyboard should be labeled with 1 in and 1 out. the midi cable plug labeled out connects to in / the other one labeled out connects to in. The plug to the soundcard is a single plug that connects both in and out.

  • @ste1438 i belive im going to buy a midi to usb instead, i think my soundcard is just to old. it does not have any drivers for Vista, and it does not work proper for anything

  • @samsote can you use a non-midi keyboard for fl studio sir?

  • @punkrosezer01197 havent tried

  • @samsote Late response, but It's probably not hooked up right. - one of the most common causes of input not showing is because the input is not hooked-up or configured wrong. There is an in and out. One or the other can show up, but they will not show up together if you connected things wrong. USB Keyboards are as easy to install as a mouse. The older style two plug cable give people problems because the in and out wires often get hooked up backward. The "in" plug hooks up to the "out".

  • @ste1438 Well the problem i was having was that the Creative Soudblaster Extigy Dont have drivers for vista or windows 7 Just for XP... so i need to get a new soundcard OR a midi to USB cable :/

  • @samsote This is something that creative labs is notorious for. In their defense though, a lot of music hardware is like this - it forces people to upgrade. Also supporting old hardware is costly. Extigy got very little support - there aren't even too many hacked drivers that work. Kx project will not work, if anyone is thinking of mentioning it. You can try to find a hack driver - or yes, upgrade.

  • @ste1438 Beware hack drivers can crash your system - and even prevent your PC from booting up. I experienced this myself. If you aren't familiar with fixing issues like this stay away.

  • @samsote This is another late response, but mine was doing the exact same thing. After quite a bit of research, I discovered that your Webcam drivers might be causing the Midi keyboard not to show up in the input list. After I uninstalled all my "Logitech Webcam" programs and drivers from my computer, the next time I opened up FL, my midi keyboard was in the input list. Try unistalling your webcam drivers and programs whether your have a "Logitech" or whatever other brand of webcam.

  • ok i just got my mido/usb cable...can i record the sounds from my keyboard on to fl studio???

  • I'm really lost. I think I have everything set up fine. I have my yamaha ux16-1 selected for input and microsoft midi mapper selected for output. both in and out are plugged into my keyboard and its going into my computer via USB. I have ASIO4all as my driver. No sound is going into FL though. PLEASE help?

  • @gottalovepie try switching the cables input > output Output>input

  • Thx 4 the tutorial......

    greets from Indonesia

  • Couldn't find your another tutorial.

  • Yes, sorry about that.

When I made this it was up - The other video is not avalable any more. It was made about 2 years ago.

  • Ok, no problem. I try to watch this Tut later and try to figure things out :P

  • Ok let me see if I understand u correctly. I can't use my samples from my keyboard into FL studio ?? unless I record it with my mic ?? but I can play the samples in FL studio out of my keyboard ??

  • @g77seven you got it - but not the mic port - Line In port. The Line in records audio.

  • If your piano skills are sub-par and you have a complicated melody, does FL Studio allow you to do multiple record passes in the same channel/piano roll for you to "build up" the melody in multiple performances/passes?

  • @trebilicious I think not, but that would be awesome

  • Hm don't know, but you could use a layer for that.
