  • Give Mr. Rose some credit. Everybody can change, and some people take a while to mature and see the light. Think about the parable of the Prodigal Son.

That said, the problems of Black communities like Detroit won't change with new charter schools. The problem is in the Black family. Education has to be desired by the parents and enforced by them. The idea of being "un-educated" needs to despised. It used to be so in the past, and carried black people through segregation.

  • LOL!!! Yall "Negative Nellies" PLEASE GET REAL! I doubt Jalen Rose gives a hoot about whether you or I don't like his past. Don't waste your energy trying to knock him down . You will need every ounce just to catch up to what he IS DOING RIGHT NOW let alone pass him. Better get some rest or yo will be late for your burger flipping job.

  • Thank you for confirming what was becoming obvious.

  • I don't believe we are talking about one "mistake". They range from when he was young (crack houses, Ed Martin) to this year (Duke comments, DUI) and everything in between. I still believe one good deed shouldn't put him in the store window as a role model. Maybe if he had gone to MSU and not U of M you would be agreeing with me?

  • @dannyp3903 Crack houses and Ed Martin? Jalen was at a house that he had no idea was a crack house and was never affiliated with Ed, that was all Chris Webber. And if he went to MSU he would be burning couches and getting in huge fights at parties.

  • @dannyp3903 And the Duke comments reflected how he felt at the time. If you can find an athlete that grew up and went to high school at SouthEastern and grew up in that culture that doesn't hate Duke, then let me know. He's progressed into a much different person in this day and age, obviously.

  • I used proper english and spelling in my comment. I didn't use any language that couldn't be used in any company. But because I don't agree with your opinion I'm not classy? Al Capone gave more to the poor of Chicago during the Great Depression than our own Government did, but does that excuse the other things he did in life?

  • @dannyp3903 Yeah, because a murdering bootlegger is comparable to someone who used some overly harsh words (that he regrets).

  • Jalen Rose has got an awful lot of baggage to be using him as a role model. Education? What was it he had to say about people who went to Duke to get an education and graduate? Wasn't he in trouble in school for hanging at crack houses? I guess it's "do as I say, not as I do".

  • @dannyp3903 A guy, who clearly regrets things he has said and done, wants to put his money into helping poor, inner-city children from his own neighborhood, and that is your response? Dragging something up from when he was a poor 18-year-old? Keep it classy.

  • Great job, Jalen. Great job Mackinac Center, on the reporting.
