  • More interesting than bad i mean.

  • @TheRedWaltz24

I sure bet that paul simon took influences and sounds from other artists. I think copied was the wrong word. But dont you think that the riff from white sky just sounds like the one from this song. And hey im not saying its bad. Vw have said they was influenced by simon and they clearly were, their chord progressions for example are simmilar i think. And yeah its not the same riff. But when i listen to white sky i am struck by a simmilarity. And i think it is more interesting th

  • the two dislikes for this song are prbly stupid exwife's. dumb bitches anyway

  • great song. classic shit!!

  • @zoweeks8452 Odd...coupling the words "classic" and "shit." Reads like a lack of imagination.

  • I remember back then when this was released I would regularly run 10 miles then drink about 12 pints of best bitter then easily get up the next day, work, then do exactly the same. Now I'm depressed, shake, and get a hangover from drinking just tea. See what can happen when you listen to this music ?

  • painfully beautiful.

  • Somebody could walk into this room and say your life is on fire!

  • I am fat Charlie !!!!!!

  • Reminds me of simpler times.

  • The guitar run at 30 seconds (and at 1:48 etc.) always makes my heart ache with its sadness. Just beautiful.

  • @daysleeper236 Ray Phiri FTW!

  • White Sky: Different Key

    -No Similar main tune

    -No similar song progression

    -similar beat

ehhh, sounds like a different song to me

    still love them both though

  • sad as a lonely little wrinkled balloon

  • I don't think anyone understands... everything is always stolen.

Who created all the melodies that we like, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and many other famous composers... the blues? its a bach melody with a swing pattern.

Every song is just a re-make of those pieces, there is no such thing as stealing.

  • @musicalman1995 Actually the blues has its roots in West Africa and African music , I don't know where you got that Blues came from Bach...

  • @Lorhechapol yeah it was created in west africa and african music. but you can still find all its melodies in a bach piece...

  • @musicalman1995 dude, 1-4-5s come up everwhere. If u were a god damn african u wouldn't be listening to bach, unless u or someone u know brought it with them from Europe. And btw the blues as we know it in America actually started in the plantations and cotton fields...the blues to them was just a slow sorrowful tune with African influences. In the central american islands, they were songs used to mock the slave owners. No european influences, the africans didn't like the Europeans...

  • @hiphopsucks96 dude, the RHYTHYM of the blues is what you are talking about.. the melodies? It's Bach with a swing pattern. Go and try it out yourself.

  • this melody is my secret love. nobody knows about, except you and me.

  • Paul Simon defended vampire weekend when people said VW rips off other artist. Look it up on the google

  • One of the best songs from that album.

  • white sky by vampire weekend, is far better in my opinion (only saying because everyone is comparing them)

  • Ray Phiri's guitar work on this song is amazing!

  • hes just brill

  • Great song from amazing album ...

  • Still found myself singing 'oohhh aaahhooo ahhoooo ahooooooooo' from White Sky at the chorus

  • Damn, White Sky does sound real similar to this! I like this song. :)

  • I say the joke is on HER too darling!!!

  • Palinko, Ty si úžasný....

  • The best album of all time. Every song is perfect. When was the last time that happened?

  • hey you two! im 28 and ive been listening to this Gentleman and loving him since i can remeber, at least since i was four. cool stuff that you two are my age and listen too. if you havent ever heard of John Prine as well check him out, hes a good guy too. and send me a message too because it isnt everyday you run across younger ppl who enjoy good music!!!!!

  • I never want this song to end

  • omg white sky really look alot like this song!?!? even the freking voice!

  • listen to "white sky" by Vampire Weekend....

    sounds like this song

  • @evilvon Vampire Weekend is a rip-off of Paul Simon. Listen to "Horchata" also, that's a rip-off of "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes".

  • @minamu8 No disrespect to Paul Simon. When he concieved the idea for his Graceland it was a genius moment, but in reality Paul Simon sample or ripoff other african artist music who could never possibly break the commericial barrier in music.

  • @WithoutRemorse12 that's a depressing way to look at it.

  • @evilvon listen to anything by Vampire Weekend... ;)

  • @evilvon damn man, I was gonna say the exact same thing.

  • @evilvon EXACTLY like it. This song must have inspired that one, cause it's beyond coincidence how similar the songs are.

  • @chainchomp111 They were highly influenced by the Graceland album as a whole.

  • @evilvon I actually read some interview/article where they said that they weren't influenced much by him at all and they didn't really think their music held much similarity to stuff like "Graceland", etc.

I don't think that's really possible, I think they just didn't want to own up to how much they really took right out of Simon's book, and they wanted to make it seem like all the music they've made was their completely original ideas in every way.

  • @chainchomp111 What's funny is that the band Los Lobos claims Simon stole a different song off this album from them. "All Around the World or The Myth of Fingerprints" came together after Simon jammed with Los Lobos. They claim he just ripped them off. Los Lobos claims they had agreed on shared writing credit, but they were not listed when the album came out. Simon denies this of course.

  • @KriticalHit That's really interesting, haha. Happens more often than you'd think in the music business, really.

  • @chainchomp111 theres an old saying that goes "good artists create, great artists steal"

  • @evilvon Hey! this song was around wayyyy before that band. Its a good band dont get me wrong, sooo White Sky sounds like this!

  • @WagleBrosProductions I know but my point was that if you like this Paul Simon song....you may also like White Sky by Vampire Weekend because they sound similar. I know Simon's been around way longer, I've loved Simon and Garfunkel all of my young life.

  • @evilvon lol sorry, i missread it XD

  • @evilvon White Sky sounds more like Proof off of Rhythm of the Saints

  • @evilvon Sure it's sounds like "White Sky" by Wampire Weekend. But that's all. Even Paul Simon, in a recent Vanity Fair interview, said that there was no copy but just that he and VW had some of the same influences. So there. Enough about people stealing others' songs!

  • Comment removed

  • @evilvon Yeah, they rip him off sometimes.

  • @evilvon I see what your saying. Its cuz they are both really influenced by African music.

  • @takomaskate its because vampire weekend copied paul simon. but yeah i guess, i do love vw, but i mean come on, its clearly a copy.

  • @AliGrabs Perhaps you should look into the history of the production of Graceland and how Simon stole music from Los Lobos (All Around The World) and many of the African artists he collaborated with. Simon isn't exactly free from theft. Also, if VW did indeed "steal" from this song and sample it without permission Simon's lawyers would be all over them to get money from them.

As for me, I don't think this song sounds anything like "White Sky," except for some very vague similarities

  • @evilvon exactly what I was thinking

  • @evilvon Sounds NOTHING like this.

  • i admire his music so much.

every time i listen to his music, i want to live in that time back - in the 80's

  • Paul Simon is your master

  • LOVE This SONG!!

  • my dad has listened to this same one album for the past 30 years, and now that i've decided to brave listening to it, i find i kind of enjoy paul simon. i really like something about this song in particular :) eh, i guess you just have to try some new things and you never know what you'll find.

  • @spearmintythang 30 years? It was released in 86. Also... new things? I thought yer dad listened to this one album for the past 24 years...

Still.. good on ya for appreciating stuff you've grown up with... it's where i get my Beatles, Paul Simon (and Garfunkel) and Johnny Cash obsession from. Good stuff, wouldn't want to go without :)

(also.. stuff that comes out these days days can't hold a candle to it...)

  • @spearmintythang OMG!!! I looked at your comment and thought it can't be 30 years! Then I realized I am 29 and my mother was indeed listening to this when I was about 6! So more like 23-25 years, my memory is not so good! :) But I love this album! One of Paul Simon's greatest! Give him a chance! He is an amazing artist.

  • @Laynaesbonita this album is from 1986, so I guess it's 24 years old =)

  • @Laynaesbonita I too think its just a few years ago. Life goes so fast! Furthermore these songs seem to be made just yesterday. I love this album so much. I was 22 then.

  • @spearmintythang Thanks for making me feel old; I was in high school when this came out. Seriously though, I think it's only about 25 years old. In any case, classics never die, and this whole Album is the definition of classic! Your Dad's not crazy, he just has good taste. Simon Liked to experiment with wildly different styles of music; This was pretty much all about African styles. I think the album after this, he experimented with South American styles. Not as Classic as this, but Good.

    One!

  • @spearmintythang well that would be true had it come in 1980, but it came out in '86

  • @spearmintythang The album was 24 years old when you posted this, but the fact remains that this is the single greatest album ever recorded, from start to finish. There's not even a close second. Not from the Beatles, the Who, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Michael Jackson...no one. FACT: Graceland is without question the greatest single album in music history.

  • @ArseneWengerIsGod I say it's one of. I submit from the Beatles: SPLHCB and Abbey Road. From Zep: Zep II and Physical Graffiti. That's all I have, though.

  • @ArseneWengerIsGod I do believe this album is a great album, however I disagree over whether it was THE BEST.... Here are a few albums that are just as great as Graceland (in my opinion): (Ordered alphabetically by artist) "Rubber Soul" "Revolver" "Abbey Road" "Highway 61 Revisited" "Royal Albert Hall, Live 1966" "The Byrd's Greatest Hits" "Tea for the Tillerman" "Forever Changes" "Moby Grape" "Are You Experienced?" "The Dark Side of the Moon" "The Wall" "Tommy" "The Velvet Underground & Nico"
  • @jeremysayspeace Fair enough. Obviously, it's a matter of opinion. For me, there are a lot of better bands/artists than Paul Simon...they've just never made one single album that's better than this one from start to finish.

  • @spearmintythang Not to get all technical on you...i under the essence of what you're saying...however...Graceland was released in 1986 (25years ago...lol)

  • @spearmintythang

your dad is a smart man. Graceland is just one of those albums and Paul Simon is and will always be...timeless.

  • @IhaveaPhDinTV you are correct, he is timeless. A great singer / songwriter

  • Going through a divorce right now. Just when you think you are all alone in the world you are reminded of the lyric "well this will eat up a year of my life, and then there's all of that weight to be lost" and you realize that you are not alone and will survive.

I heard this song for the first time when I was 14. Who knew how meaningful it would become nearly 30 years later. Pure genius.

  • I've always felt a certain sympathy for "Fat Charlie". Simply lovely song from a great 1986 album. Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.

  • The crescendo always gets me :D By far my favourite off of Graceland

  • This was always my favorite song on this album. The subtle orchestration always took me

  • Great song from a great album. Paul Simon spans 5 decades of great music and never wanes in talent. Pax to all from Ian Smith.Xxx.

  • I think the best one was I know what I know, homeless, and The boy in the bubble!.. The Boy in The Bubble was crazy.

  • i saw paul simon in brooklyn last year at BAM...great, just great.

  • very witty song, sounds like woody-allenish romance

  • hahahahaha!

  • best song i ever heard

  • great song!, folk sounds rules!!
