love this song! many people say "butterfly" was mariah's first real R&B album but what about "emotions"? every track on that album is pure r&b/soul. i think it was more soulful than butterfly

@misses18yearold when people refer to RnB these days that mean urban rather than old school RnB. her first album (and every other album after) has contained old school RnB, but butterfly was the first real urban album, daydream having a couple of urban feels 'fantasy remix'.

One is her album jacket, and the second is a documentary I watched on the making of one of her recent albums which I saw on an Air Canada flight from Vancouver to San Diego. She is credited with producing and writing this track, yes. But she is credited alongside Walter Afanasieff, himself a well known writer & producer known for writing for artists. The show I saw featured a scene with Mariah and a pianist.

From my 24 years experience in writing music, its hard if not impossible to write instrumental music, or even pop songs unless you have some musical ability. I know of one folk singer who did that, but I don't think Mariah did in this case. More political marketing than creative talent

@VancouverComposer ik who walter is, but if you ever paid a little more attention you'll find out what kind of relationship walter and mariah had when they collaborated and it was very unique i'd say. mariah would sing a tune in her head to walter as they sat by a piano and walter would try his best to interpret mariah's melodies she was singing onto the piano. then lyrics were written toward that song. not to mention mariah does have some experience in playing the piano

@VancouverComposer you don't necessarily need to know how to play an instrument to write musics. her voice, said on many occasions, is her instrument, and as long as she can make her own melodies with that she can write lyrics. every single song she's done, aside from the few covers, she's written, or co-written, and when it's co-written it's all mariah's ideas with other's input not the other way around. check on her daydream or butterfly albums. it says she was one of the composers of themusic
