The only song that makes me cry everytime, something very special about it. It brings me back to the late 70's in Ireland a very sad and very happy place.
When I was a child my uncle would play this while he sexually abused me in the guest room of our family home. whenever I hear this song it brings back the memories of that happy time. When he died last year, I had this music played at his funeral. God bless Uncle Stephen, you're in a better place now.
I'd pray the old pervert has gone to hell & will be judged accordingly for his crime.
How sad that this beautiful song be tainted by that horrible memory & your innocence stolen from you that way. What a shame he wasn't exposed for his perversion, dragged into a police station & charged with sexual abuse. If he had been sent to goal the inmates would have fixed him up. I hear they hate Rock spiders. Sex offenders should be castrated at the very least.
@kbuzz120 some1 has hacked my account and posted this whoever the sad prick is I'll find them and castrate them! Seen as they mentioned stephen, They are obviously 1 of my close mates haha by the away for those of you unsure stephen isn't actually the name of any uncle of mine lol
ALWAYS reminds me of meeting my wife for the very first time. She was sixteen at the time....I,ve continued to love her for the last 35 years. And shall do, for whatever time I have left.
@TheDiannejoy if you drag over the words that you have put in quotes then r-click on them, choose the 'search Google' option, it takes you straight to the Mary Black website and that track.
WOW!!!!....one of my favourites.....this is so so beautiful....You Irish boys sure know how to make a beautifully romantic song....Love your work very much...This beautiful song should be hall marked 24K gold..One of the most significant exports from Ireland to the world....pure genius...
my mum loved this song, she died two years ago and every time i hear this song it brings back memories of a brilliant childhood thanks mum,you were the best
i must say every irish song has a good story about it and this should be the music in the charts (IRISH) because all the music today i dont listen to rather all this music and im 15 this is a good song :D
Never forget this song Heard this as a kid and my dad said someday son you will find out that love is the most powerful thing there is.and would I play this song at his funeral as the words ment so much to him.
I heard this song on Radio 2 last week and was transported back about 20 years when I was about 12 - going to car boot sales in my uncles van. It reminded me of my nan and grandad. That banjo is haunting and it was very strange, driving to the shops and tears welling up in my eye. RIP nan and grandad - love you loads and for as long as im alive this song will remind me of when I was young, free and I must say a lot happier that I am now!
The magic of this song is in the intro. The banjo playing is wonderfully poignant and moving - demonstrating brilliantly the outstanding musical instinct, feeling and talent unique to the travelling people.
@draiocht25 The introduction is indeed beautiful in many ways, but, to suggest that this is a talent unique to travelling people is not only inaccurate but also ignores the countless beautiful pieces of improvised and written music created by the many, many thousands who are not.
This song reminds me so much of my parents. Mammy and Daddy met when mam was 16 and they married five years later. They had eleven in family and were truly content and totally in love. Just a week short of their 40th wedding anniversary daddy passed away suddenly. We still listen to this song and at family gatherings we will always sing in in daddys memory. I miss you so much daddy, sleep tight and sweet dreams till we meet again xxxxxxx
@GleekyLittleVampire As an Irishman and a lifelong fan of the Furey's i'st always a pleasure to hear such appreciation for this beautiful music :) May God bestow his blessings upon her and reunite her with your Granda, and may she be in heaven 15 minutes before the Devil know's she's dead :)
@GleekyLittleVampire I so hope your grandma went peacefully.... My dad left us at the age of 59 ,, 17 years ago... these songs bring him back for a little while....xxx
Probably one of the greatest Irish love songs ever written. Timeless. Still see da listening to it havin' a smoke in the kitchen. Miss you. Éireann go deo!
Love this song.. so heartfelt, memories of my mum and dad playing it on my old record player when I was a kid and us all singing along, what memories.
this song brings back so many memories for me growing up. I am 29 years old and now i sing this song to my two year old daughter. This song is known the world over, and will live on for years to come. xxxxx from the Rebel County Cork.
my pa would had sung this to my ma till she passed 10 years ago, as he came from co cork, but sadly he went up that wooden hill 45years ago, and i can still hear him singing this one to her now. bless this song, and bless them both.
I hope things are well with your grandmother and i understand her love of this type of music, but it's not Irish, it's just being sung by an Irish group here.
James Thornton is listed as being an American citizen, Thornton is an Anglo Saxon name some moved to Ireland, using your logic that makes him English.
my great nanny passed away 3 months ago, she would have been 100 years old today, and this was her and her husbands song, and i know wherever they are, they'll be singing it together now, such a beautfiul song
Anyone who can actually listen to this song and not be touched is devoid of emotion in my opinion. This is the music our grandparents adore, which cannot be bad considering the shite out there at the moment thrown in our faces.
@fatboysonny There was shite music being thrown in people's faces back in the old days as well, you know. We only ever hear the good old stuff because all the bad stuff has rightfully been forgotten. @liamthedream Thanks Liam!! I knew it was a 19th century song, but had forgotten the story behind it. Pure magic, straight from the soul...I had not known Jolson and Como did it- must look it up, so thanks.
29 years ago today the light went out in my heart when someone very special to me died in a car crash. Frilly, you gave me a reason to live. Sweet 16 was and is our song. You are always in my heart and forever in my thoughts.
Because of Finbar only through my Irish Colleagues in Libya, I came to know about this Magic of Finbar's voice... Really Great soul teasing voice... Salute
such beautiful music, im from london and a total drum and bass boy but ive listened to the fureys all my life and think they are untouchable. absolutley amazing
This song makes me mourn, and it makes me also mourn the people who are still with me who mean so much to me. It's just perfect and as everyone on here seems to have a memory of warmth with this song, it is the soundtrack of happy times. I play this on guitar and it was one of the first songs i learnt. Reminds me of my mum, who gave me everyhing I have today
Whenever I hear this song it always reminds me of the happy times in my early years when a dear friend of our family Michael Flynn came to stay. What a lovely person he was and always singing these kind of songs. I wish I could bring those days back again no swearing in songs people showing respect to others instead of todays yobs.
another by the fureys that makes me think of my hero who is my dad! i can just hear him now as im listening to it my dad in his car singing along to it! <3
this song brings me back to my youth....when everything was bright and it seemed like it was always sunny every sunday morning.....dad making the fry-up mam clean up around the house before we all went out for sunday dinner...or off to my grandparents house ....how times have changed......im gonna have to start playing the fureys more around the house on a sunday morning would like my own kid to have similar memories ......
@maireadiball Dont know if i,d go that far but you certainly are right, it is an absolute classic, one of my late mothers favourites and mine too, a classic, they just dont make them like the Fureys anymore
its all about how you still feel about the your FIRST true love. i.d give my house, car, bike, and my right arm to ..........just have that feeling back again. when i hear this its back down the road to memorie lane, wish i could turn the clock back. i miss you so much joanne h,......... may be next time xx
I had the pleasure of seeing the fureys sometime in the eighties, and beleive me they are so much better live than on record.they just take your breath away!! This song and The Green Feilds of France will always remind me of the first woman I really loved. So A.K.B. wherever you are, thanks for introducing me to the Fureys.
Ma agus an bhliain a bhí na hÉireann agus Rugadh mé i Sasana, is breá liom ceol Gaelach ar fad, Finbar agus na buachaillí a tharraingt ar an teaghráin Bainim do do chroí. buachaillí súgradh Fair!
Haunting Banjo melody that nails it. The song is an old fashioned tune from yonks ago. The Fureys make it better than all the old versions by the heartfelt vocals and the priceless banjo work. I liked this even when I was in the midst of my heavy metal stage in Mildura Victoria Australia circa 1981.
@lilwolf27 We were slaves to no man until the powers that be got us into this E.U. failed project, only to forsake our Identity, our culture, our people, our political choices and our right to say no, it is reckoned 50,000 ''Irish people'' will leave our nation each year not to Europe though, I wonder why, could it be a language thing a culture thing....we have more in common with the USA than any european country, oh to be the 51st state of the good old U.S.of A...
i am coming 31 and I met my husband as i was turning 16! This was the song for our first dance at our wedding and our Band turned it into "when i asked you to wear this blessed ring" not a dry eye in the house! We are Irish and my grandparents loved it as they used to dance to iti watch my wedding video and still cry!
This song has precious memories for me of my dad who sadly passed suddenly from cancer at the age of 62 - I remember as a child listening to him singing this song to my mum with a beaming smile on his face - treasured love and memories of a loving dad.
nycest song n dis wrld im 16 nd im man 4 gud irish music nd i want dis song playd at my weddin cos it reminds me of my grandad dat passed away wen i was small nd dis s d only memory i hav lft of m!!! :)

Whenever I hear this song it always reminds me of the happy times in my early years when a dear friend of our family Michael Flynn came to stay. What a lovely person he was and always singing these kind of songs. I wish I could bring those days back again no swearing in songs people showing respect to others instead of todays yobs.

Ma agus an bhliain a bhí na hÉireann agus Rugadh mé i Sasana, is breá liom ceol Gaelach ar fad, Finbar agus na buachaillí a tharraingt ar an teaghráin Bainim do do chroí. buachaillí súgradh Fair!

got this on vinyl (well the album) for a quid the other week in charity shop. what a steal!
