He proposed that this misconception might occur because the intensity of the sound increases as an object approaches and decreases once it passes and that this is misperceived as a change in frequency."
"Craig Bohren pointed out that textbooks erroneously state that the observed frequency increases as the object approaches an observer and then decreases as the object passes the observer. The observed frequency of an approaching object declines from a value above the emitted frequency, through a value equal to the emitted frequency when the object is closest to the observer, and to values increasingly below the emitted frequency as the object recedes from the observer.
Hey, whats going on there? It looked like the truck trailers being piggy-backed were hooked directly together and had a set of train wheels attached somehow. Yes?
JM: Some viewers might not know about, "The Doppler Effect." Doppler is the scientist who defined this effect and it is that sound....or light...is affected by the relative speed between two points. Between fixed points the speed of sound (or light) will be the same, about 1100 feet per second for sound. But when at least one of the sound generators is moving, the speed is either added or subtracted, it changes the sound.
i miss the old santa fe paint scheme. both the red&silver, and the blue bonnet. at least in most cases they just threw BNSF's logo under the loco#, but it just isn't the same. loved santa fe
very nice I just saw a former Santa Fe warbonnet in the sideing at North Metro Jct ouside of Krum Tx a few days ago it was Warbonnet red and unpatched no BNSF lettering anywhere on it anywhere and in the lead the crew told me they hated it but I dint have my damn camra with me to get a shot oh well
@RailsandRoads omg u guys, this is an ex sante fe warbonnet dash 8 40cw with a leslie rs3l on it, there end of story, wah do some research before u comment i dont mean to sound harsh or rude but im gettin tired of correcting people
This is the first time Iv`e heard an RS3L, all my friends have been talking about it,lol they will be worshiping me when they hear the news. great vid
Carefull now fella's. It COULD be a Prime 920 as well. A direct copy of the S-3L, after Leslie let the patent run out on the S-3K & S-3L horns. Almost identical in sound, But the Prime horns never used the spiked power tabs.
Alot of people mistake RS3Ls on the semi-older GE power for Prime horns. The RS3L on this particular GE is set on the full orfice setting, giving out a louder sound.
THANK YOU!!!!!! Someone who actually knows. I have seen way too many people mistaking Leslie's for Prime horns. ATSF didn't use Prime horns people....
I never understood why UP did away with their RS-3L's; that was the worst move they ever made. I'll never forget hearing those all the time on UP trains back in the 90's. What a great horn!
We're not trained, it's just something we get bored enough to do to keep us interrested in trains, but it's sites out there to help you out, and there is plenty of people online you can talk to and ask, even me!
A classic RS-3L, Rare as can be on the UP now, glad to see BNSF still takes the time to clean/tune them insted of chunking them in the ditch & putting a K horn on, yuck.
Santa Fe had their own exclusive version of the Leslie S3L. One day, these horns will be replaced, and videos like this will be the only way to hear them in service.
That engine has seen better days...

Was the ATSF 941 a C-40 Unit or an AC4400 unit?
Doobie1975 3 years ago
ATSF 941 is a Dash 8-41CW. It's one of the 25 Dash 8-41CW units on the BNSF roster.

road railer trains should be used more often (like stack trains and piggyback trains are) on the BNSF and UP railroads.
TheUPBNSF 4 years ago
We could do with trains like that in the UK. Get some of that traffic off the roads.

I love the Leslie horns. The RS3L has a good sound, but my favorite is the RS5T.

i agree. the RS5T is the king of all train horns, but the RS3L is on up there too tho

most of the prime horns were used on BN.
tipdrip215 3 years ago
Nice catch. The roadrailers to Sagniaw usually run after dark.
CRPULSE300 4 years ago
I remember that sound...BN used to have some S3s in operation in Illinois...Cutting through the crisp fall and winter air.
Hiei2k7 4 years ago
the S3s your referring to that BN used (to my knowledge) was just the RS3K
NS4100 4 years ago
That's probably it, seeing as after hearing this again, the S3s i remember were a little off this tone, but relatively the same.
