I don't understand why 3D Realms let their projects linger so long. I respect the idea of not rushing their games, but at the end of the day, a business can't make any money without selling any products.
No, since 1995. After Rise of the Triad was completed, 3DRealms planned to make a "dark sci-fi game" with a real 3D engine. At the end of Summer of 1995, Joe Siegler announced that Prey had begun development. Originally, it was supposed to compete against Quake, and indeed, the very first screenshots of Prey (when Tom Hall directed the project) are very Quake-like. This trailer actually shows the SECOND attempt at Prey, with an engine made by Paul Schuytema.
@DevilMaster No, Paul Schuytema was the designer and William Scaraboro was the one that did most of the work on the engine however William sadly passed away in 2001.
If this game could have been released back in 1998 it would still be considered one of the best games ever. Being released 8 years later though...still came out as a great underrated game imo
Basically, the engine was hell to work with, everything (even a simple square room) had to be thought with portals in mind, to avoid rendering the same thing more than once. Everything, from coding to level design, was painfully slow.
This was actually the second attempt at Prey: the first one (with Tom Hall) was very primitive (almost on par with Quake 1); they made a third attempt with Corrinne Yu in attempt to secure an engine for Duke Nukem 5 (how ironic) but that went nowhere either.
Nothing was released (no screenshots, not even information about how it would work) about Corrinne Yu's engine, so it's safe to assume nothing worth releasing (or even worth talking about) was ever made.
They restarted the Prey project in 2001, when id started developing the Doom 3 engine, so they decided to base Prey on that engine. And the rest is history.

@shibito85
most likely they needed a high dollar publisher to get everyone paid for developement. I think ravensoft picked them up if im not mistaken..

I wish this one was released. If they did, imagine how far they could have brought the technology now.

Yeah... this woulda been amazing back then, but they released it when it seemed average. It probably would have replaced Half-life.

too bad this got canceled, would have been ground breaking for it's time

jesus, that's advanced tech for it's day, didn't think they'd have the portal technology back then!
How did it take so long to be released?!

is there a place i can grab the kmfdm sounds??
soupsmoke 5 years ago
Unfortunately, no. Sascha Konietzko was never paid in full for his work for Prey, so he will never release it.
DevilMaster 4 years ago
oh, man. i think kmfdm was supposed to have done the soundtrack for the older game, damn i'd like to hear it.
soupsmoke 5 years ago
The music you hear in this trailer is part of the KMFDM soundtrack.
