The term "Ahh, Mr Hornblower" becomes a catchphrase for Sir Edward! I do love this series. Every now and again I have to watch it to give me some inspiration. Duty, honour, loyalty. If you have those three things in your life and your work, there is nothing to fear.
@DanTheGerbil360 Good one. lol I actually shot a mocking bird once, accidently. I was so tired of their loud chattering that I thought I could get rid of them by shooting into the air. Lived in the sticks so no problem about accidently hurting anyone. Anyway, i hit one! I felt terrible but the weird thing was that all the other birds formed a circle around the one and starting crowning(sp)(term?). They did it for some time and I sat there and cried with them. Didn't know birds mourn.
@theonemattock This is the honest truth - a guy at the place I work was bossing me around as he was with others. I made the coffee one morning (my turn) and had brought some dutch coffee in for a change. The bully saw me, poured himself a cup. So what i did was to pour it straight down the sink and say "you're not worth the powder"
@capedory156 You don't think he'd find a way to hurt anyone Horatio liked and kill them? Then kill Horatio? If he'd be so dishonest as to firing early, he'd have no morals in killing again. I believe he was a serial killer. He was standing by when his senior officer was killed. Whose to say he didn't kill him? No, there are just some people/animals born broken and better off dead. In the US, at any given time, there are between 30 and 32 serial killers at large. Glad P used powfer!
I agree capedory156 (about Pellew not killing him dead). This is a great storyline but I'd love to have seen Jack's face years later when Horatio made it to the top of the ranks!
Thank you so much for posting these videos. I read on Ioan Gruddud wikipedia page that he is trying to buy the rights to the script so he can try to keep the series alive. Does anyone know the latest on this? On weather he is making progress or is did he have to quit?
@baroquemusician1 When Pelew says, "I see something in you Mr. Hornblower," That is like the greatest thing that could ever be said to a young person; to know that your superiors see in you the making of greatness; it inspires something in a person - something for greatness.
Many duels were a point of honor. There were few times that either party were shot, many times they both would shoot in the air, as long as honor was served. In swords it was usually first blood didn't necessary mean killing just the turning out for it.
For instants, one of the most famous, the BurrHamilton duel in 1804, Hamilton shot into the air, Burr then shot Hamilton, but some believe that it was an accident and that he only wanted to miss with a close shot, witnesses say Burr was in shock and distress when Hamilton went down. It was also said that it was ppre-arranged that both parties would fire but not hit, as a point of honor.
richiebabe24- you're ruining one of the best plot twists in the story. To those who watch the series for the first time, you should have said "Archie is just gone". Sir, I order you to delete your comment at once, Lieutenant richiebabe24
Err... yeah okay. But in my defence I never mentioned that Hornblower eventually gets his own ship and gets married, or that Wolf is a traitor. I certainly never mentioned that Archie takes the rap when Hornblower starts a mutiny and ends up heading for the noose. Perish the thought!
what I dont understand is how archie ends up with spanish. Spain only declares war against Britain in next episode and anyways, this action seems to take place somewhere near English channel. Surely, there is a greater chance of French capturing Archie than Spanish?
Why do the villains always choose to make their treacherous backstab attack on the hero who just spared their life in front of a half dozen armed witnesses, rather than, say, two days later in an empty alley somewhere? It's almost like they're trying for suicide-by-cop.
because villains are divided into 2 catagories, 1: The Henchmen/Brute (Dumb, Overbearing, uses Brute Force) and 2: The Mastermind (Cunning, Wily, often indirectly attacks the hero, using allies against each other)
So what would Simpson have done if he had killed Hornblower by cheating? I don't think the "oops, it slipped" excuse would have stood up to inquiry. There was really no exit strategy after that.
I mean, what's the point of being "the best shot in the Navy" if you have to cheat to win a duel?
He might have justified that in his own mind. But I don't think the officers hold him in particularly high regard as it is. Still, you're right. He might have thought he could get away with it.
to be honest, pellew isnt that far from them, but yeah it is a bit of dramatic licence, there was just as much chance he'd of hit hornblower too which would of been a bit of a crap ending to the story! :)
I think that perhaps the captain was suspicious of Simpson from the start. He knew he might try to attack Hornblower when his guard was down, so brought along his own firearm to protect Hornblower.
Under the rules of duelling, each party may discharge one shot. Any attack after those two shots have been fired, may be considered an 'unlawful attack', and intervention by a third party (in this case, the captain), would be acceptable.
why did the captain shot him would he get in trouble or is it coz the captain thinks of Hornblower as a son or thinks he will do excellent in the Navy
I truly recommend the actual books for any of you who enjoy these films. They're at least as good, and show Mr.Hornblower's whole career instead of just his younger years.
Actually it was possible to do so. Pellew had been in the service for many years, so it is likely he could have done it. All you do is to aim above the target to compensate for the distance - wolla
It might have been a rifle, but that would have been very very rare in the 1790s. Most likely, it was a standard service musket. If that be the case, it was indeed a lucky shot, as muskets are highly inaccurate beyond a range of about ten yards.
"You're not worth the powder!" Beautiful! Brilliant! I can't contain my happiness at the demise of Archie- torturers! Even though I don't have a crush on him.
I once saw these movies and I am thankful that someone has posted them. I appreciate you taking the time to post them. Are all the vidoes on your page the entire Series?

Not necessarily although this is at ridiculously short range a smooth bore pistol is not that accurate.
