@tFighterPilot I don't think it would be accurate to say there are an INFINITE amount of vowels because technically there would be a finite amount of sounds that your vocal chords can produce. I think innumerable would be more accurate.
@Srondon You're both right. Vowels are produced by moving the tongue through an open space, the oral cavity. There are an infinite gradation of tongue positions available, as there are between the places you stick your tongue to make t and g. In both cases they're set in certain intervals so that it sounds cohesive, and how many intervals there are at once is finite. Then there's an empirical limit, how many intervals languages actually have, and the physical Least Noticable Difference.
The Seventh Vowel? No big deal. We, Hungarians have 14.
