There's an organization called CCLI (Christian Copyright Licensing International) that churches pay annual dues to. Churches also submit logs of the songs they perform in their services. CCLI processes this info & pays the royalties to the corresponding writers. It's not a perfect system, but neither is BMI, ASCAP, or any other performing rights organization. Personally, I like it.

2.are they playing the music from a CD? NO!!! they are recreating the music themselves, if copy write laws stated that you were not even allowed to re-create them there would never been any worship in churches and you would have thousands of little churches like Hillsong popping up everywhere with there own music!!!!
however churches should put the name of the artist at the bottom of the screen. :)

The point here is Planetshakers, Hillsong, CFNI, Jesus Culture etc etc. They don't need to be famous here on earth. Because in heaven their names are known. Let us just be used mightily for the glory of the Lord.
@andreasmariosetiawan - I think the copyright laws also apply to praise and worship music. The host church MUST obtain permission to use (including posting of words on big screens) any material that holds a copyright. Planet Shakers may also require royalty fees.
@grannies7 I'm pretty sure Pastor Mike, Pastor Joth and the rest of the band do not mind at all. I mean, they do encourage other churches to play Shakers' songs as well. I, for one, am very proud that these songs are sung everywhere! ;D At the end of the day, all glory goes to Sweet sweet Jesus!
