Miles, Trane etcetera on your first post would today, if living, agree that Dave Douglas and Terrence Blanchard have more in common in flesh tones than style. Stop posting on a jazz site if you don't know 101 about jazz.

He is only nominated for a grammy and he only has crappy musicians like chris potter and rick margitza play with him in fact I don't think that he even knows his fingerings. He must suck based on those solid facts. idiots...
Facts? Which facts would you be presenting? I happen to like the performance on this video....Not a fact, just my opinion...You obviously don't like this video, and you're entitled to your opinion, but that is YOUR opinion, and not a fact...I just wanted to point out the difference....
i understand sarcasm perfectly....What you wrote was insulting...Perhaps you should try rephrasing the comment so that you gain a better command at sarcasm....
If you understood sarcasm "perfectly" you would understand that the key words of my statement were "only nominated for a grammy" that was a pretty clear indicator. Im sorry you couldn't comprehend.
I like how all these people trash Dave on here and probably none of them have accomplished any of the things he has. What's the point? If you don't like it, don't listen to it. He's obviously still a skilled musician, its not like this is a Kenny G video, so just be happy that this group can make the music they want to and make a living, because they're all way better than any of us, so if they couldn't do it there wouldn't be much hope for the rest of us
hey idiot, i don't think that much of Douglas either, but not because he's white. ever heard Jon Swana? check that out, a-hole. besides, no one disputes the afro-american dominance in jazz, doesn't mean that only that race can do it well. like the man said, get a life.....
gotires, get a life. Those jazz masters that you mentioned, what do they all have in common? They all think your an asshole. Don't be so close minded in music, and don't comment back.
Everybody has his taste, but Mr Doulgas is an innovator and (in my opinion a great soloist)
His love for the music, his project are really great.
You can't say that about Mr Blanchard,Mr Marsalis very good mainstreamer players....but sincerly I already have heard that kind of music and I prefer miles and co.
JAZZ MASTERS Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellignton, Miles Davis, Charlie Parke,Thelonious Monk,Coltrane,Mccoy Tyner,Ben webster,Lester Young,Wynton Marsalis,Herbie Hancock,Dizzy Gillespie,Scott Joplin,King oliver,Dizzy Gillespie to name a few .WHAT DO THEY ALL HAVE IN COMMON?
I would hope that this would not deteriorate and fall into the moronic white/black discussion. Forget about that stupid stuff. Half the trumpeters I mentioned are white. Right now, Tom Harrell is one of the highest of all jazz masters, white or black. Let's not go there. Terumasu Hino is one of the greats of the last 30 years.
who a fuck said that.Have you recently got any recent records from the musicians on my trumpet list?Have you heard the recent matirial from any of the afro American masters?I know its not important what color the musician is but don't ignore the fact that the greatest innovaters of this art form are black.
OHHHHHHHH! I get it. Hes a black supremacist. hum, i was trying to put my finger on it. I thought we learned all about how skin color is meaningless in grade school. MLK Jr still has some work to do, i guess.
Not even a fair point - they're all masters because they devoted themselves to the performance, study, and innovation in music - and they all had their own strong artistic visions, just like the great composers like Beethoven, Mozart, Strauss, and Mahler had.
Thank you, so why do you think he gets so much hype? I think his playing on the new SFjazz quintet cd is horrible--he's competent but stylistically only fits in on a couple of tunes. How 'bout Alex Norris, Dave Smith, Jim Rotondi, Greg Gisbert, John Swana, to mention a few more who are killing.
I keep buying his records...don't know why. .. only listen to them once. Great player but should be sideman...boring music....why everyone thinks he's so great is beyond me...Maria Schneider too....b.o.r.i.n.g. beyond belief. Only record I've ever listened to more than once is the Wayne Shorter one.
Check out Sean Jones, Jeremy Pelt (although I didn't like his latest), Alex Norris, Tom Harrell (always killin'), David Weiss (incredible writer and player), Brian CHahley is unbelievable, Roy Cambell (if you want some non-pretentious out playing) and so many others.
I'm a cousin of Rick Margitza, known him for a very long time, nice to hear good things coming from people about Rick, he was always a great player. You should hear him with the Moutin Reunion Project.. unreal.
I met Rick in Toledo years ago at a club called Rusty's. Rick knew the drummer that I was with and sat with us after the set. We talked for a long time. Rick is a super guy. We need more of him !!!! Mike
I haven't heard Donny much with Dave Douglas, but that man's rhythm is incredible. I think he'd work great with Douglas. And Rick Margitza sounds fantastic on this vid too.
Is there a DVD of this? How can I get this in good quality?

Yeah look/listen to their abilities. Great musicians/artists.
However we do live in a class society. And I think the Black/White glasses are a symptom that we live in a sick society today.
Maybe not tomorrow, but that's a revolutionary question.
Forwards ever! Backwards never.

sounds like someone here is a hater. Wynton has to be one of the best jazz/classical trumpeters to ever live.

man... I agree with liking Margitza, but don't hate on Donny. That dude can blow.

He sure can, and is a good musician all around. Methinks Margitza fit better in the Douglas soundscape - drier, more compact, less showy

They're both great. Anyone from Maria Schneider's orchestra has a high level of musicianship compared to most others.
