The book hints that yes, maybe he has done it in real life, though not in an overly obvious way. The movie hints that it is all in his head...not over obvious, but more clearly than the book. Like I said, nobody can be wrong. Even if Bret were to say he did it, he doesn't own the rights to interpretation, can't force people to see his way.
