I watched this on a whim from my On Demand channel and I was not disappointed. This film has got to be one of the most interesting 3-story movies I have ever seen. It easily found it's way on my recommendations list. Also the long sequence shot from the beginning of the 2nd story has got to be a record or something!

lol i've looked at some of the comments talking about japanese cinema.

two of the directors in this movie are french and one of them is korean.

the film only takes place in japan and stars japanese people and is spoken in japanese.

so yeah i wouldn't consider this a movie FROM japan.

Japan is actually an extremely civilised place, everyone is polite and will consider your comfort. Japanese films are usually pretty surreal though, they're fantastic mind you.

I was a little disappointed with this movie. The concept was three different directors, showing how a city shapes us in some way or another. But the three movies shown, didn't seem to illustrate. (Spoiler alert) A girl turning into a chair? A lunatic bombing Tokyo? Though I will say the last one with the man stuck inside his house worked quite well. THIS IS NOT A BAD MOVIE!!! ONE OF THE BEST JAPANESE MOVIES I'VE SEEN! It just wasn't my kind of movie. Sort of an artsy movie. 3/5.

This movie is NOT japanese. It was made by two european directors and one korean director. Japanese movies are a little different. If you want to see a very good japanese movie yous should watch tokyo sonata, or air doll. Well, any movie by Hirokazu Kore-eda is a must-see.

Merde was my least favourite, favourite was Bong Joon-Ho's. So much better than his more mainstream "The Host".

All of these shorts are great though, one of the best collection of short films I've seen.

it's just sad to see these comments, there are such rich metaphors in merde, with a great understanding of the japanese culture and even history(the memory of nanjing)..thus become critical. and shaking tokyo gives such a positive resolution, or imagination, for the social issue in japan, even asia. Why do people just want to be amused by this trailer? the actual film is totally different, much more interesting with a real concern for the highly developed society. TOKYO is not just a setting.

this trailer makes it seem like a film with 3 great stories mixing into each other. more of a fast paced film. its not. its a good movie to watch though, inspirational with the stories. not really with the visual aspect. the soundtrack for the entire piece was great though, to me the second film was the best then the third. lastly it was the first. I believe this was gondry's , dunno the characters never got onto me. but i do love gondry's work.

Gondry's segment was like something from Kafka, quirky but fun. I found Carax's segment to be a self indulgent mess, full of very unsubtle satire but Bong's was really something else - like an Haruki Murakami story. Two out of three 'aint bad, especially when it comes to anthology films.
