  • a very unique progressive band from the 80's due to crossing new wave with 60's influences

...more psychedelic than what most other bands were doing at the time, for sure

  • i like ther part from 1:17 to 1:35

  • Fucking cracking drummer..rip Pete

  • it wouldnt be the same if mac was bald

  • @GriefTourist

    Clever observation, I totally agree.

  • Rap is NOT music. It can be poetry but, in my opinion, you have to be able to whistle the melody in order for it to be music. These days, among the other things listed, everyones got to be a tough guy its so FUCKING lame. Even when a modern "band" is singing about a sad subject they say it like a tough guy. Ridiculous

  • mrwrestling and quicksilver .. can yall shut the fuck up please. yr dumb

  • I have this on home video!!!! I wish they released it on DVD!!!

  • @thenewfella1994 Awww... he really hates it? I love this one... haha.

  • Epic.............

  • All hail the mighty Will Sergeant!

  • great tune. if u think this song is shite u shudnt listen to echo and the bunnymen

  • @thenewfella1994 would you blame him its fucking shite

  • I go on throughout with my day and at random moments I sing out, "I practice my fall for practice makes per-fect, chained to the wall for maximum hold..."

  • just saw them Friday night. Pretty damn good. Ian had a smoke in his mouth the entire time. Wish those guys would take care of themselves a little better. They all look pretty ragged.

  • what fuck wits!

  • what a great summer bunnymen, talking heads, bauhaus must have sent my parents mad

  • "signing acts with no talent or creativity who just "look" good, and excluding real artists who can play, write and produce their own music." ya you mean rap?

  • chords for this?

  • I love this song. My favorite is Bedbugs and Ballyhoo.

  • Rap music is one of the last genres with any room for innovation. If you don't like it, that just means your too old.

  • @EternalPeaceMusic Rap has been around since at least the early 80's and oddly enough the very first "Rap" song was by an 80's pop band. See Blondie "Rapture" 1981. I thought it sucked back then and still think it sucks now but to each their own. If you don't know any bands that innovate then you obviously live in a well furnished cave dwelling. Radiohead just came out with a rather new album.

  • @losghost Rappers Delight was released in 1979. I didnt say rap music was the only innovative genre, I said it was one of the last genres with any room for innovation. I know several new bands that innovate. If "to each their own" is a philosophy you live by, then why did you insult me on the sly, saying I live in a cave? Not sure if the Radiohead thing is a joke. You can actually remember 1981? Jesus, you ARE old. Just Kidding. I hope you have a wonderful day. Also, listen to the song Aquemini.

  • @EternalPeaceMusic Yes, Unfortunately I remember 81 well. The cave comment is not an insult, it's more of a comical way to say someone is out of the know. At least that wasn't the intention.

King of limbs is very different than anything that band has come out with before, so no, not a joke. Indie bands enjoy the luxury of experimentation.

  • @EternalPeaceMusic Rapers Delight was the first top40, and the second hip hop record (and a good one). But the first one, was by an artist that I forget the name. Blondie was the first to hit ToP10 , or at least, with a great audience. Blondie used to sell millions, aroud 3-4, in those times.

  • @EternalPeace, I think is fair to say Rapers Delight was the second, and introduces rap to masses, with his top40. Blondie spread Rap to all people, since they were extremely popular.

In the UK, beside Blondie, of course The Clash make rap popular, with songs (first single The Magnificent Seven) of Sandinista, also in 1980. They also charted in USA. Adam and the Ants have a very popular song in UK , Ant Rap or something.

  • I can't say how much I love this band, just really awesome group. Ian McCulloch was such a babe <3

  • if you look inside the cover of red hot chili peppers greatest hits album flea tells of how this band influenced him when he was little :)

  • Yep, that was Jools Holland. I used to have the VHS tape of this. Made me want to move to London!

  • @shatzi you mean Liverpool. not London. Saw the Bunnymen grow from Ërics", They were great days mate. Julian Cope, Pete wylie and Dave Balfe and Mick Jones from Landan visiting!!!

  • Favorite high school music for me, but I still love the stuff!

  • All There remember?? This music was never popular. Bon Jovi and other shallow, boring, shit makeing bands were what was most popular. I remember people getting beat up because they listened to bands like Echo and the Bunnymen........ But then again they were pussies. HA ! Great music then and even greater music being made now.

  • Creativity and good music didn't die with your generation, it just moved on and left your ass behind.

I'm sure the old hippies of the 60s said the same negative things about Echo and the Bunnymen. Get over yourselves old farts!

  • if you don't love this band you have no taste!

  • Awesome song! I hope one day in the near future people will come to their senses and re-discover this amazing band. They always had the potential to become bigger than all the mainstream crap, and who knows, maybe one day they will.

  • Brilliant performance.

Was that Jools Holland from the band Squeeze in the last shot in this video?

  • This was when music mattered and was good!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love how on every video you can find someone complaining about how music has sucked since (blank), whether it be 1969, 1976 or 1993...

  • of course rap didn't wasn't the sole killer of rock, only most of what did

  • really awesome moment in time from one of the best time capsules of music ever

  • can't post

  • Awesome performance of an underrated Bunnymen song...one of the best moments in the URGH A Music War movie.

  • BTW, does anyone know which Album or EP this is on. I've been trying to track it down for ages. Thanks :)

  • @DeadWhiteButterflies

i have a discography 3cd set called "a retrospective" which has this song. originally from the album title "songs to sing and learn" released 1985 i think.okies hope it helps

  • nowadays artists use music to make themselves famous. then, people used music to express something. theres your difference.

  • bad bedhead... but what a great song

  • Stop moaning that there are no new bands on the level of Ian McCullough, Julian Cope, The Chameleons UK, Radiohead, Joy Division ect...

Actually there is, but she deliberately only posts stuff on the net that makes her seem like some Joni Mitchell folk singer. Go to my site and see my films for the shock of your lives. I was in mourning for the decline of this great band (doesn't "The Fountain" just suck) until I found this girl....

  • @hassanvielma don't even compare the smiths to shit like the cure.

  • @JESUSr00lz

To shit like the cure have you ever heard Faith, disintegration or bloodflowers.

You piece of shit , btw the smiths are one of the most awful bands ever , sure they can write outstanding lyrics, but they are one of the gayest band ever , fucking pussies.

  • @Tengocuentadeyoutub lol, what difference does it make?

  • Ian sort of reminds me of an effeminate Ian curtis.

  • Will Sergeant very under rated a great musician and a nice lad met him in Germany 82 or 83 not sure mind you all the band were very down to earth not like today .

they had time for their fans :)

  • How Ian did NOT become the greatest rockstar in the world ??

  • Nice work Doc Cheese!

  • Saying rap killed music is ridiculous, there are some amazing hip-hop artists out there like there is in every genre dance, soul, alternative whatever. People always talk like that about rap music and say 'oh i could do that, its talking into a mic' there are some great artist out there who are amazing lyricists and use very complicated rhyme schemes and multi-syllable style techniques while having great lyrics with actual meaning, but people look at whats popular and say its all garbage,

  • The Intro with those flangy n chorus laden guitar effects reminds me of early Cure.

  • From beginning they were a brilliant band! They became a commercial then!

  • URGH! A MUSIC WAR. is the best movie ever. And " Dear Mr Echo the lead singer of...ha ahahaa." - The Young ones. Hi hw esd.

  • I've never heard of Echo & The Bunnymen until I saw this MIND-BLOWING movie ( Urgh! A Music War ) back in '82 and as a 13 year old kid I INMEDIATLY became a fucking Bunnymen FAN on the spot!!!.... They took my mind into another DIMENSION for MOST of the 80's!!!

  • Fender Dual Showman reverb,Yamaha E1005 analog delay, mid 70s telecaster, booster and fuzz. EH Clone theory. its been 25 years so memory may be a bit off but i think that`s what Will Sergeant used at that period.

  • @MaestroZ fuck me mate you got some memory i seen em in manchester in 1980 and i remember fuck all except the dry ice and the groovy tunes ...can you tell that in a song?

  • @dermot51 I remember the set up cause that is the amp i had at the time and it was as big as a bloody refrigerator and a bastard to carry around. The Yamaha was one of the few delays around at the time and i had one as well. Im sure even Will doesnt remember what he used although the black telecaster was customized in 83 by Will himself with a bigsby and a load of crappy stickers on it. He still has it. That guitar was about as heavy as a dresser and that is why Will prefers his old Jaguar.

  • Brilliant especially considering he is all of what... 20 yrs old here.

The AUDIO however is NOT LIVE on the URGH movie release.

I still have my BETA tape of this URGH film. Outstanding.

  • One of the best bands in history....in their prime

  • it means your showing your age!!!

  • i wonder what kind of pedal the guitarist is using....??

  • the singer is just a boy?but...

  • can someone post "roller coaster" especially if there was ever live performance recorded.

  • these bands just oozed talent - echo, xtc, the cure

something went very wrong after 'the summer of love' didn't it ?

    did E kill music?

  • @daxio14 rap came and destroyed everything good.

  • aye rap with a silent C

  • Rap didn't destroy music. As a musician who plays guitar and writes music, I love real hip-hop as much as any other genres of music and it's quite clear that rap didn't kill anything. If anything the record executives have killed mainstream music because of signing acts with no talent or creativity who just "look" good, and excluding real artists who can play, write and produce their own music.

  • very facinating suggestion dude... and i think you have hit the nail right on the head!...

though looking back at the 90's we did have some great bands... manic street preachers releasing one of my all time fav albums in that era,

i think the problem now is that great bands don't get the chance to be heard.. thanks to the Simon Cowell machine!

our youth are missing out bigtime!

Cowell needs locked up for crimes to music!

  • Not in my world.

  • We are the salt of the Earth!

  • can someone post avalanche please

  • I like sugar kisses

  • What the fuck happened to music ?? in this era people made statements using music these days they are either fucked right off cos its not PC . or they cant cos it doesnt line the pockets of some fat musicly detached slug

  • @quicksilver600

Corporations turned into a product and fucked it all up. This is NOT what was being played on the radio at the time (in the US anyway). The same can be said for today though, where shit is played on the radio but if you search across the internet there is some really powerful kick ass stuff going on.

  • @quicksilver600

Maybe because they cannot interpret the lyrics and need one line songs with toss ins.

  • @quicksilver600

Music has a habit refecting the way of the times, as any art form does. This was in the 80's, a time of hot politics, a rebirth of right wing society, unemployment, and riots on the streets. Artists simply had to make a statement, because that's how they felt at the time. The reason it's not like now is because it's changed, simple. These are just tame right now in comparison, but don't expect this to be the end of such. Please have respect for the geniuses yet to come.

  • @quicksilver600 Nevermind

  • @quicksilver600 good music still exists, you just gotta unplug from tv and radio to hear it

  • He certainly does, I just requested it twice at the Ritz gig and he said some very bad things about the song.

  • McCulloch hates this song

  • sorry for being thick but how come

  • For me it's a find memory of the Bunnymen because I really like them--even if they didn't like the song. I think it may be retroactive disappointment that it wasn't the hit they hoped for.

  • He sounds like curtis here. He looks like a Llama or something like that. He must have been 21 or something

  • This particular live song was a big landmark in the soundtrack of my youth.

I wonder who speaks towards the end of the performance - is it Will, Les or Pete? And what does he say? Electro...?

  • Les Pattinson talks/sings towards the end. He meant to say " for maximum hold,it sparks like gold" although the original line was "chained to the wall for maximum hold, windows too far,too far for my legs though open the door and let out the cold" as to why Les opted for that line will remain forever a mistery..lol.

  • Thank you very much, MaestroZ.

  • Les talked about how he didn't like to sing though at this point they were trying to get him to anyway. He much preferred just playing bass. I think he could have been a decent singer.

  • One of the, if not the BEST acts of the 80's. This band was incredible live. I loved them. Of course, what do you expect. They're from Liverpool. LOL.

  • What????Never???

  • Well, the good thing about your post is that you're not an old geezer like the rest of us.

  • These guys were the farthest thing from the LA scene, they literally walked to their own beat!

  • and?

How much praise did these guys get at the time? Do you remember or were you too busy watching Live Aid?

  • Is'nt it unjust that "the next big thing' of todays music generation have so much praise heaped upon them when in fact they are just ripping something off 20 yrs ago,

  • not quite...Echo and the Bunnymen were a whole new thing. Nothing to do with hollywood pop sex symbol "rock".

  • Will - shoegazing godfather.

  • great band of the 80's

  • correction!

    smiths greatest band

    the cure 2nd greatest

    thsi idc

  • sooo gooodd

  • To sound like Will did in 1980 you need a mid 70s Tele(maple neck) a Fender Dual Showman reverb with 2X15 JBLs. A Yamaha e-1005 analog delay,EH Deluxe memory man,EH clone chorus,MXR Distortion+. IIRC,that was his setup around 1980. Also, the main factor being that Will Sergeant was, and is, a great guitar player.

  • great talent!

  • what would effect would i have to use to sound

    like there guitars

not just in this sound but in general with them?

  • throw in some muted strums to make that "choppy" sound

    chorus

telecaster with the switch on the lead pickup for treble

  • One of the best Dam band's of the 1980'

  • U2 ripped these guys off!

  • one of their best.

Liverpool's best live band at the time, closely followed by Wah.

The Shine so hard, gig at Liverpool's Empire theatre was the first gig I ever went to on my own (14 at the time), with the apocalypse now stage set.

Always good value live., Always gave it their all

  • fookin love this band!!!

  • so fuukin awseome

  • I love this, My favorite band as a kid in the 80's! I always thought they were immortal!

  • God so did I!!! I've always been a big fan of Echo& Bunnymen!!! They were incredible!!!

  • this is wat punk sounded like before the americans fucked it up

  • Post-punk my friend, might I correct you

  • I was a big fan as a teenager in the 80's. Good to remember I had good taste. They are reeaalllly good. Great that really brings it back.

  • Dammit! I wish I would've been old enough to appreciate EATB in their heyday! But I'll suffer with knowing them now.

  • me too and i love em

  • fuck you you nickelback/coldplay lover!

  • u said it, nickelback sucks balls this band is so much better

  • who dares compare this to nickelback?!, wtf!

  • yo no entiendo las letras pero me flipan

  • EXELENTE BANDA...

  • jim morrison, ian curtis and ian mcculloch DO NOT sound nothing alike!

what world are you people living in?

  • The similarity between the three singers mentioned is that they are all men.

  • The Ian mac vs. jimmy Mo. comparison has been going on and on and on...Yawn But, early Echo was obviously influenced by The Doors. there is no escpaing it. it's like not recognizing The velvet underground in REM. It's there celebrate it. All great bands.

  • I think this should be Obama's theme song!

  • congratulations. today this video was selected by the NYC Punk Rock Evolution Foundation.

  • Ian Curtis influence is prevalent.

  • I'd rather say Jim Morrison and not Ian Curtis. Ian Curtis sounded very much like Jim Morrison and so did Ian McCulloch.

  • I've always thought Ian Curtis' voice sounded like Jim Morrisons too

  • I would go to the extent of saying that Ian Curtis totally copied Jim Morrison's vocal style whereas at least Ian McCulloch tried to bring his own style and mixed it with his primary influence. Well, that's the impression I get. By the way, it's just my opinion.

  • great band!!!!!!!!

  • My uncle is th lead guitarist ther wikid

  • that's cool

  • Will Seargent?

  • wow, thanks for the suport. It's the intensity!!

  • Ever heard voz propia? :)

  • I love this movie.

  • Best band to EVER come out of Liverpool.

  • bold

  • Ever heard of Echo and the Bunnymen? :)

  • @petrusaloisius

    or detroit, or manchester,

  • We're the salt of the earth!!!

  • I'm so old I remember when these guys were the ONLY band that sounded like this.

  • The original one!

All bands today copy them, without talent.

    The Echo are great!

  • oh i wish i have a digi cam .. when i do get one its the first time im gonna tape eco and the bunnymen , i just saw them on summer darkness in tivoli here in holland !!

  • We followed them all through Holland in the early 80´s, got to know them, they put us on the guest list and even gave us a lift to one of their gigs. Mac is very nice and friendly, always accessible, but Will is moody and hates touring. Saw them again in Hamburg in 2005, waiting for a new tour.

  • This is an amazing song.

    They're an amazing band.

Ian is so sexy with his voice.

  • Love that crunchy yet clean guitar riff Will is playing. Very bright Fender Tele sound.

  • saw Echo 3 times in the 80s...

Opera House, Boston (w/ Fleshtones & Billy Bragg)

Great Woods, Mass. (with New Order, Gene Loves Jezebel)

    Cornell University

and once in 1999 or 2000 in San Francisco

  • I hate you so much! Just kidding! Just really jealous....I have never seen them live...boo hoo....i grew up in a "culturally defficient" area.

  • best fucking band in the world....can't wait for the new CD!!!! - anyone know how to get copies of videos of this concert - and 1983 royal alber hall.....???????

  • pete the best drummer ever

  • I will always love this band!!!!!!

R.I.P Pete de Freitas, you are missed.

  • one of my favourites as well

  • Mac never rated this song for some reason but I really like it. Does anyone else have the bunnymen boxset that was issued a few years ago. Theres a great extended version of Silver on it. If you don't have I recommend you track it down! Some great live recordings as well. She Cracked is a stand out.

  • You can get the extended version of silver on the 12" single. Found it in a charity shop the other day and i havent stopped playing it since :)

  • When I first saw "Urgh! A Music War!", I was very suprised to see this 'Echo clip on there. Splendid film--X, Dead Kennedy's, Pere Ubu, Devo, The Police, Magazine. I used to have it on VHS, but lost that gem years ago......Thanks for posting this!

  • I taped "URGH!" off of th USA network back then and still have the VHS. But it's edited for TV, and I kept trying to pause out the commercials, but I kept falling asleep. So i missed some music and got some commercials but 20 years later those old commercials on cable are hysterical. I saw this movie at the Royal Oak theatre, and later saw Echo &TB there live.(80's)

  • I have a DVD of it (albeit a very poor transfer from videotape) It looks as though there will never be a clean DVD release due to the difficulty of getting permission from all the artists.

  • Ha ha. Is it really 28 years ago that I went to the Rainbow in Finsbury Park and saw this band? I was so impressed I adopted the Apocalypse Now army jacket chic for a while. Are they still going?
