@Darusdei True...and also one of the least accurate past 200 meters. If you can hit stuff with it at 200 meters, you're doing good. If you can hit the paper at 300 meters consistently then you lucked out and got a hell of a sweet AK. In my experience generally only very good shooters with years of familiarity with the Ak are able to consistently get lead on a man size target's center mass area at 200 meters. It's mainly due to the 7.62x39mm round itself. The SKS has similar problems.

@wigon hate jumping in on an old thread, I love law enforcement, and I support them 100%...BUT am I just supposed to hide under my bed and hope the bad guys don't murder my family during the 20 minutes it takes the cops to show up? Cops protect the innocent (most of the time :) ) but it is an individuals duty to at least try and not be a victim. and as far as the feds go, IF they came to take your guns it's a little late to try and run out and get one to defend yourself. Just my two cents.

@jdwohlers I wasn't saying that people shouldn't own guns. I was saying that assault rifles are overkill for home defense. It's extremely rare that burglars/home invaders use body armor. A good shotgun and a good 9mm pistol combo is all you need for home defense along with some good hunting rifles (for hunting). Also... unless militia movements are fully trained on making shape charged explosives, well then good luck stopping tanks (not to mention fighter bombers and laser-guided munitions).

I know this because a friend of mine was shot in a drive-by shooting in which the AK's hollow-point rounds (later confiscated from the perp) went clear through the house like butter. Many militias also DO train to fight against the federal government. BTW, what MOS were you?

@jdwohlers Overkill I define as "over-penetration". So unless they are frangibles, the rounds will penetrate clear through other rooms in the house (and loved ones in those rooms). If you have other homes next to yours, it will also likely penetrate those homes. I'm not saying you shouldn't use it if that is the first weapon available, but a pistol is usually better for close quarters while a 12-guage shotgun (00 buck shot) gives less chances of missing and has massive knockdown power.

@wigon that's why I stated PSP or hollow points less penetration, and as for OO buckshot, that penetrates just fine as well, if you don't want to miss and have less chance of overpenetration use #2 buckshot, Pistols go threw walls as well, it's about control and confidence with what you are using not the size of it. I don't have to worry about besides the odds of a 7.62x39 round still having the kinetic energy necessary to leave my house and kill my neighbors.

@jdwohlers pistol rounds and shotgun rounds may go through walls, but slow down tremendously and generally don't penetrate multiple walls. As I've said, I've seen first hand what the 7.62x39mm rounds do to a typical home after a drive by shooting (and those were hollow-points) and every round went clear through the entire house through multiple walls and even after going through steel window frames and through my friend's hip. So you can go on believing whatever you wish to believe.

@jdwohlers It was determined that the rounds were hollow-point by the police when they caught the guy. They had thought the house belonged to a rival gang and so basically they hit the wrong house. But if you want to send bullets flying all over your neighborhood, that's your decision. I'm happy with a Kal-Tec 9mm/Pardner Protector 12 gauge combo. By the way...I own a Norinco SKS but I use it as a cheap pig/deer gun and not to play wannabe GI Joe in the woods with paranoid fanatics.

@wigon Well we normally used the M7 blasting caps with the M700 time fuse for our charges, but you are right in that all Infantrymen are trained in at least the operation of a claymore which is electrically command detonated. First off the wire is already attached to a blasting cap, it comes coiled around a narrow cardboard tube, grounding yourself by placing your hand on the ground before handling the leads, when inspecting a cap don't blow into it if it is dirty use the wrist to wrist tap...

In place of the Javlin they switched us to demo and urban mobility, doughnut charges, water charges, linear charges...you get the picture. We also were taught field expedient charges like the grape shot charge and how to make a shaped charge (stand of distance cone diameter all that jazz)

Although in the Army we have a different procedure with claymores in that we short wires on the clacker side while we're attaching the firing wire to the blasting camp using a crimper.
