94 and with that much voice left! It still had a beautiful quality and he phrased it perfectly. What a great performer! He is still alive and 97 years now.
Beautiful and moving! Super idea, putting in the old clip of a younger Tony Martin singing at the same time. That man is one of the all time greats. Thank you to Feinstein's for having him there.
Tony Martin is one of my favorite singers. La Vi En Rose is one of my favorite songs done by him. I'm just glad to know he's still alive, looking great and active at 94. Of course he's not going to sound as good as he did in his prime but neither did Sinatra but it really doesn't matter. This man is a treasure.
I think this is amazing how you "melded" Tony singing in performances of many years ago with his recent performance in New York. I was lucky enough to see him perform last year at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, and he was wonderful. I hope to see him perform again. Thank you for sharing!
Great for Mr. Tony Martin! He should continue to sing for as long as people still want to come out and see him - and obviously this audience enjoyed the show. Many stars continued to perform into their "golden years" in spite of their "critics" insisting they retire. That's incredibly presumptuous to say the least. Sing on Mr. Martin!
The Jill4388's of the world CAN'T cut slack. The very idea that anybody would think pitch has a place in a discussion of a 90-something year old legendary singer is just preposterous. The fact that this sweetheart of a human even shows up and spends time with an audience - period - should be MARVELLED at, but as I like to say (in a borrowed and altered cliché) "Those who can't do, critique."
there's another Tony martin video on YouTube where he sings at a slightly earlier engagement (2005 - 2006 ? ) and his voice was stil wonderfull then...he sang " begin the beguine" and "there's no tomorrow" with a truly powerfull voice for his age...that's how I would have liked to remember im...helas this performance here is a bridge too far..however you cut it this is sad and slightly degrading..time is cruel and nobody can hold it back, not even this lovely man.
"cynical much" ? is every comment on this video that slides towards the negative forbidden ? are you the only one allowed to comment ? I don't think is was being disrespectful towards Tony Martin at all, and no I wasn't being cynical..I just think that this video is sad , that this performance is sad..sands of time all good and well, but must it be displayed so cruely ? I hope he enjoyed it, made him feel good..but does it make YOU feel good to see this ?
And yes, it DOES make me feel good to see it, because I can feel the LOVE and am not hung up on comparing what he used to be to what he is now. I just met a 20 year old who saw him sing for the first time ever and he was AMAZED at his wonderful, sweet , timorous voice. Nothing sad about THAT. His performance is, IN MY OPINION and to the sold-out crowd who were there that night, simply marvelous, awe-inspiring, and FLAWLESS, period. But that's my opinion which has just as much merit as yours.
Lewis, you're entitled to your opinion, but we all are. I agree with Dirk above. Mr. Martin should be credited for his respectful and kind demeanor, and perhaps he was "FLAWLESS" when you saw him, but clearly here, his voice isn't even remotely what it used to be, it's waaay off key and wobbly. Some performers know when to stop...others just can't live without applause and that IS indeed just a little sad. But if people are willing to pay...then that's their choice.
Great to see Tony still alive and kicking, but really - there comes a time when some performers need to call it a day and rest on their laurels (and for venues like Feinsteins to stop booking them). This reminds me of the latter-day performances of Peggy Lee and Anita O'Day, when they really only hinted at their former greatness.
That night was filled with friends and fans that enjoyed making him feel good, and he made us feel good getting a chance to see him again. A lot of energy for 95, and now loosing his wife. It meant a lot to him that night, and made him feel good. It was worth it all. At 94 I'll be lucky to fart.
"At 94 I'll be lucky to fart." AMEN to that! I agree 300%!!!! Cynics and naysayers beware--Cosmic Karma may get ya! Stage presence takes mental focus and at any age, it takes skill. I am HAPPY to hear anyone at 94 sing...male or female...'Cause they have real balls! I saw Peggy Lee sing with one lung better than many with perfect health. I'm thinking here also of the late, GREAT Alberta Hunter! God bless her and Tony and all the great "older" performers! SIng on...sing on...do not go gentle..
Like a rat-infested river, the internet is teeming with armchair critics.
I just met a 20-year old who never heard of Tony Martin until he was taken to a recent performance of Mr. Martin's in New York City. Having no basis for comparison, the 20-year old was simply smitten with the voice with which he was presented, not to mention the boundless love this great legend exuded, something losangeleno is sadly out of touch with.
For Jill4388, maybe being crass and disrespectful, not to mention the infantile use of excessive exclamation marks, will carry her into her 90s with perfect pitch and hearing. But I seriously doubt it.
Props to Tony Martin for being a person of panache and savoir-faire, something the Jill4388's of the world can only DREAM about.

His eyes look as young as ever, even if his voice isn't there.
He and Cyd seemed to have had a pretty great marriage.
Even though she's gone now, that might explain the eyes.
