  • @LadySweetCherries Shine on you crazy diamond!

  • i am a straight man, yet i find myself falling in love with Jeff Mangum

  • Jeff is the only musician I ever want to meet.

  • "What song should I sing?"

    "..Gardenhead."

    "Okay."

    hahahahahahaha.

  • He is the cutest thing alive. I can't stand it. All of his mannerisms and voice etc. He and Julian Koster need a TV show.

  • lol @9:38 "and this is the part of the song that i didn't write any lyrics"

  • Comment removed

  • jeff mangum doesn't need a microphone

  • god, hes so adorable.

  • Just bought tickets to see him in Chicago on Feb. 6th. Needless to say I am the happiest person on the face of the Earth right now. Oh yeah, I live in Michigan so I don't know how I'm gonna get there, and I really don't care for that matter.

  • 0:19 Dat smile :D

  • @Cruzman3609 i always make that same mistake when playing this song :c

  • IIIII LOOOVVEEEE YOUUUU JESSUUUUUSSS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISTTTTTTTTTTTTT

  • Jeff should release an album of nothing but acoustic covers of all his songs, even the ones that were already acoustic.

  • @joesmomisdead Live at Jittery Joes, Google is your friend.

  • 14 people have no soul

  • mey names jeph and i plauyh in a band cald netutral milk hotel and thihs is a song we puft on uor new album

  • Pshhh. I liked Neutral Milk Hotel before Neutral Milk hotel was a thing.

  • Neutral Milk Hotel fans are the best.

  • I don't believe that you can be in love with someone you've never met, but my feelings for Jeff are about as close as it gets.

  • at least he's not dead.

  • even with the poor quality this exceeds amazing.

  • so good it hurts

  • There is no such thing as the wrong chord with Jeff Mangum, I dont think. He just changed his mind about that chord for a sec :p Its all him.

  • 0:56 plays the wrong chord and doesn't even give a shit. It's so damn awesome

  • I was only 3 when he did this show, but Neutral Milk Hotel is my favorite band. :)

  • @EllieEatsElephants me too! for both!

  • @EllieEatsElephants It's hipster garbage, just thought I'd let you know

  • beautiful

  • IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOU JJJJJJJJJJJESSSSSSSSSSSSSSUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS CHRISTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT I LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  • What year was this video taken?

  • @ashwood1985 read the description

  • at 9:39 in the studio version he goes 'and I don't know'.

  • Aw...don't call Jeff a ripoff artist!

This is a great video, I love Neutral Milk Hotel.

  • I'm only 18, but I grew up listening to NMH because of my dad, and Jeff's voice still gives me the chills to this day. NMH will be my favorite band forever and always. There's no one else like them. I wish he was still making music, but it's not like I could ever get sick of the old stuff.

  • @LadySweetCherries im 15 and i also grew up listening to Neutral Milk Hotel thanks to my Dad. I'm so thankful for his incredible music taste.

  • @LadySweetCherries

    >I'm only 18

    Costanza.jpeg

  • @LadySweetCherries 18 as well an truly enjoy neutral milk hotel, no other band hits me like they do

  • Two Headed Boy and King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 are like the two greatest songs ever

  • People really need to stop trying to sound like neutral milk hotel. All the third-rate ripoffs were what made me so sure I would hate this band before I actually listened to it.

  • @fourtoedsloth

this is the guy from NMH...

  • @GSPflip94 Yeah, I know...

  • Comment removed

  • God bless the 90's.

  • Great band, terrible band name, but the music is awesome....

  • @blueniner i think blueniner is pretty gay, myself

  • @blueniner fucking perfect band name.

  • epic!!!!!!!!

  • @yakisgewd

I like the loud vocals, different strokes for different folks i guess.

  • @yakisgewd listen to the actual song on itunes then.

  • @Dalsh502 Don't worry i have. I don't just randomly happen upon random acoustic live preformances on youtube

  • I don't mean to sound like a total lame-o, but What hollow body is this? :0

  • @TheLatterRainAndSun Gibson ES-125, I must have one. soon... soon.

  • @AveryDanger I own one, it's great. Mine's from 1953 and Jeff's is from 1959 -- They're not too expensive.

  • 11 people seem to not have very accurate clicking skills.

  • each one a little more than he would dare to try

  • I wish I could find the interview, but Mangum says that most of his songs were derived from dreams that he had. I think he says something along the lines of "I did as much drugs as the average high school kid" or something. I think it's just hard for people to imagine the fantasy like lyrics he creates without some form of altered consciousness. All I can say is dreams are powerful.

  • shutup about drugs. how many of you people use "alcohol"? that's far worse than pot or most other drugs so shut your pie holes. a self described "stoner" is probably the least threatening person you'll ever meet. this music is some of the best ever made and if drugs influenced it than thank GOD for drugs!

  • he's mortal, he has the ability to play a shitty show, and this is pretty clear evidence. don't lower your standards, even mangum can suck sometimes and he'll be the first to admit it. in the aeroplane is still a masterpiece

  • genius .....

  • Did anyone else notice what he says at 9:39-9:45?

  • drugs? he didn't do drugs...listen to "song against sex" on the avery island album. "Save my soul from all these troubled times, and all the drugs that I don't have the guts to sooth my mind, all ways sober, all ways sinking, all ways heading towards that suicide"

  • @mikerigley86

You know that's a song, right? It's not his life story or something. And there is this interview where he said that he USED to do drugs.

  • that verse,

follow me through the city of frost covered angels

i swear i have nothing to prove

i just want to dance in your tangles

to give me some reason to move

it's one of the most wonderful lyrics i've ever heard

  • George McFly!

  • whats all this talk about drugs making imagination better. it makes it worse. drugs take a long shit on creativity and if you disagree its because your to stoned. sorry that was lol but seriously im an artist / guitar player and i know how drugs can fuck up your life. 6 months sober last sunday weeeeeeeee anyway this guy seems rad kinda elliott smith attitude almost not that he's a sad sack or anything but fuck now im rambling and its 4 in the morning wtf

  • @lkschlosser you know that jeff used to take drugs, right? he descirbed himself as a stoner when he was younger

  • @lkschlosser

thats just your opinion man. i love drugs.

  • "What song should i play?" he was/is ithe man. you dont see a lot of bands casually take requests. What a gift to be able to create such music whenever you want.

  • What kind of guitar is he playing? Is it different from a regular acoustic-electric?

  • @Forsaken87 Looks like a jazz box. No clue what model, but definitely a jazz box.

  • @Forsaken87 Gibson ES-125 afaik

  • the trumpet part was really funny

  • Music like this died along with the nineties.

  • @Nickolocity try looking around before you say shit like that you narrow-minded prick. Transcendental music isn't limited to a period of time. it will always be made somewhere.

  • @theacidscreen Holy fuck, bro. Take the sand out of your vagina and relax. I'm not dissing anyone. I love Neutral Milk Hotel. I listen to all kinds of music.

  • i love nmh. i just discovered their aeroplane album not long ago and can't stop listening.

  • @IselleSimonet same here, i love it!

  • These songs are something else. Goes beyond music. It's like an elixir, or something. It's like the songs are trying to break out of the computer and speakers when I listen to em. It wants to come out at you and flood the room.

Just watching a video of Jeff Mangum live> Attending the concert of most bands

Actually seeing Jeff Mangum live > Let's not go there.

Willing to sell soul and most material possessions if I can see this dude live.

  • I would be honored if some of you would check out some of my songs. I do Two-Headed Boy parts 1 and 2 as well as other covers and some originals. I worship Jeff Mangum and if you are watching this you obviously have good taste. Check my songs out PLEASE!!!

  • this is great

  • He hasn't made that much, man, I can assure you.

  • This band is not famous at all dude,

A couple hundred thousand hits on YouTube doesn't mean anything anymore.

They split right? Jeff's in the circus now, and they haven't played a show in twelve years....

  • last i heard he was doing like ukranian folk music or something. Jeff Mangum is a unique individual.

  • @TigerBait45 If you are referring to the Orange Twin stuff, it was Bulgarian field recordings of local music. Pretty interesting stuff!

  • @mlsku

They're mentioned in the book "stuff white people like"

  • this is beautiful

  • this is amazing, thank you for unploading.

  • Kolaoncoke, you just radiate enlightenment.

  • @NINandNirvana That's just what I was thinking.

I'd like to hear an interview with him, he reaks of interest.

  • word.

  • @kolaoncoke

you saying that.. er.. well.. it makes you sound like that sort of person you seem to hold distain for...

NMH are pure. let that purity reign...

  • Thats a little naive, don't you think?

They're still just humans, not gods or deities or holy anythings.

    /ranty

  • @sliver321123 heh, wasn't meaning to get holy - i meant as in the sound is fairly un-produce.. lo-fi.. pure :)

  • What an intelligent comment you've made there. I feel like my IQ went up 10% just b/c of that.

  • fucking troll. don't listen to him.

  • woops, meant don't listen to kolaoncoke, not jeff mangum. haha listen to jeff mangum as much as possible. sorry bout that

  • i wish he would release a new album with Little Birds on it. i dont even know him and i miss him.

  • he's so awkward xD but sounds good

  • i was 2. wow.

  • me too! haha.

  • I love him

  • how can anyone say hes a bad singer?!

  • @smilingandalf Some people just don't know. It's not their fault, they're just uneducated. Mangum's voice is incredible. It's only him and Dave Gilmour that have ever made me cry...

  • @smilingandalf

    shut ur face!

  • I am so incredibly glad that someone recorded this.

  • @steve0619 He released some bulagarian folk music lol

  • This is amazing, what i would give for this again!

can't believe i was five years old at the time, does anybody know what jeff does nowadays?

  • top 10 top 10, 10 minutes of my life.

  • y does he play gardenhead so fast? i like it slower like on the album

  • Faster allows the playing of more songs, telling of song histories, and heckler handling. Personally, I like it faster because the band gets into the song more. When they play faster, Barnes on drums looks like he's in a trance in some songs. It's awesome.

  • i started listening to nmh about 6 months ago... ive fallen in love

  • What's up with his guitar during King of Carrots?

    It's making this funny sound

  • i think the high e is buzzing a little

  • It sounds like one of the strings on his guitar popped out of the nut...kind of giving it that weird muffled sound. He was strumming pretty hard, so anythings possible.

  • "up and over this is the part of the song that i didn't write any lyrics [...]" so awesome.

  • Comment removed

  • where the hell was I. Love nmh you guys make me think

  • This is so brillant . Jeff Mangum is a oure genius.

  • i did not mean to rate this video one star....not that it matters in the large scheme of things but still.... i think that i am in love with jeff... so i felt the need to say that this video deserves much more than one star.

  • we, here at youtube, appreciate your honesty.

  • jeff is so amazing. even 12 years later.

  • But you have your own voice.

  • play it again

    lol

  • He's just lifting his index finger when he switches chords so that the E string rings open. same chords though otherwise

  • carlrs15, you're right about the chords for two-headed boy, but he's definitely playing it that way...

  • one of the best live performances i've ever seen

  • Is he playing it in a different tuning? All the tabs I found just have the intro alternating between G, B, and C

  • barre chords**

  • Comment removed

  • he is playing g, b, and c, but in the bar chord form.

  • barre chord form**

  • I stand by bar. Barre is the more common spelling, but bar is correct as well.

  • thanks so much for sharing these videos.

i love everything about NMH, the guitar, the lyrics, its all just incredible. this is the stuff that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

  • What a gem of a video...thanks uploader!

  • He sounds just as good live!!!!!!!!!

  • It's funny how people automatically point to drugs when someone like Mangum's brilliant imagination surpasses their simple minds.

I don't think anyone will ever fully understand, exactly, the feeling he injected into these songs, but I can definitely see the beauty of them shining through, clear as fucking day.

  • ive been waiting for this comment for all of existence

  • Yup

  • yeah i agree. you put a room full of harvard english phd's in a room together with all of nmh's bootlegs, eps, and both albums and months later they'd still be scratching their heads lol. He's quite the guy-JEFF. 10 years of my life have passed with nmh in the back of my mind, they saved me many times.

  • Agreed

  • @Vaiseoquan you sound like such a self righteous hipster.

  • @Vaiseoquan thats cause your high as shit

  • yea no drugs just a weird obsession with ann frank and the holocaust

  • fer serious 12 years old

  • I can't believe this is 12 years old. Aeroplane of the sea is such a timeless album.

  • Actually, if the interviews are to be believed, no drugs were taken during the making of this album. Or any of Jeff's albums.

  • king of carrot flowers is what you are

  • We miss you Jeff.

  • 9:39 best thing ever.

  • hahahhaa... XD agreed.

  • What does he say?

  • "Up and over we go, and this is the part of the song where I didn't write any lyrics..."

  • Ahaha.. I love that man

  • I played some for the lady I work for, she loved it!

  • Love his music so much - I wish he'd come back and make more.

  • agreed.

  • Aeroplane Over the Sea... Best Album Ever

  • its my number one as well, right above You Forgot It In People and The Moon & Antarctica

  • shit man ive got the chords to king of carrot flowers all wrong.

  • all 3 of em?

  • two headed boy is about the lack of capacity in the bucket
