I think the Box jump is a great exercise for the body overall. great full body coordination and sense of surrounds (landing_ would be one hell of a way evade a tackle.
The box jump simply reduces joint impact upon landing and is a great exercise to improve RFD.And if you still don't believe me defranco uses them (who knows more than both of us combined) so i think they might work
no you tool, how much can one really improve his hip flexibility, sure mobility and balance(sticking the landing) are both small components of a box jump but in order to take off in the first place(especially onto a 60in box) a tremendous amount of force must be applied in a rapid fashion(RFD).How many gymnasts (most flexible athletes)? probably none. And steventar the fact that it does not occur in sport is irrelevant(when do we ever lie on our backs and push weight) yet we still bench
@mmaarrkkoodd1990 then why does defranco use them so much? :X and doesnt hip flexion help with jumping? I really don't know but my assumption was that it helped it with developing power, leading to a better vert
it mainly just improves hip flexibility.still a good exercise but its just like a vertical jump+hip flexibility.Hip flexion helps with box jumping but not with regular vertical jumps!
@JimBean0587 well obviously u havent done enough vertical jump training to realize that you can improve your box jump drastically without actually jumping higher... your claim that it forces you to reach a certain height is invalid since all the person has to do is get better hip mobility/ angle of the jump to land on it.... on top of that... nowhere in sports do you ever need to jump onto a box.
@steventar well obviously you haven't either. DeFranco has been training NFL draftees for years now and I think he knows what he is doing far better than you do.
and you must be an idiot to think that just because you don't jump onto boxes in sports that it isn't relevant. Do you ever do squats in sports with 100kg on your back? Do you ever lie on a bench and press a bar up in sports? Seriously. Besides YOU ARE STILL JUMPING VERTICALLY, and therefore, you are still training vertical leap.
@JimBean0587 1st- get off joe's nuts. i never said Defranco isn't a good coach. he definitely knows his shit.
2nd -squatting and benching have far more carryover to sports than jumping onto a box ever will.
3rd - box jumping doesn't let you extend as well as a regular jump because the athlete has to worry about tucking his legs enough for the landing onto the box.
and I'm not saying it doesn't train vertical leap... I'm saying vertec jumps are what really matter.

@steventar box jumps is one of the best ways to increase your vert

@vongSTAA no its not.you can improve your box jump but still have the same vert!box jumps are mainly about hip flexion

@steventar Do you realise a box jump is a VERTICAL JUMP onto a box?
and a box jump forces one to make a certain height - improving your jumps. Whereas a "vertical jump" is really just to test.
