when i have rem sleep, it feels like its heavy to breathe, stuff around me look like other things, bizzare things, and i am also feeling that my carpet is pushing me down. and the last is that its hard to wake up from rem.
also, the body paralyzes as to not harm the person/sleeping partner while in REM. he twitches every so often. in this stage, he is not technically "dreaming," but he is rather hallucinating in stage one, (which is when we experience the feeling that we are falling in our sleep, or seeing different things right before we wake up.)
i don't mean to be the guy that corrects people about little stupid things, but the baby is actually in the first stage of the sleep cycle, not REM. He's in a transition period between awakeness and sleep, in which the brain produces high amplitude theta waves, which can be seen in an EEG. During REM, the eyes do not open, but rather move quickly under the eyelids. REM normally takes anywhere from 70-90 minutes to achieve on a normal, healthy sleep cycle. (longer if unhealthy).
I've actually almost encountered myself dreaming with my eyes open though. I felt like I was being sucked into something but I got scared and decided to move my feet physically.
Oh yeah its really real!! Freaky huh!!??!!

I did that when my mom brought me back from the hospital as a baby, and she thought I was dead.

That isn't REM sleep I don't think. One of the characteristics of non-REM sleep is slow, rolling eye movements like those seen here.
