Kennecott and Sandy are in fact on completely opposite sides of the Salt Lake valley. For anyone unfamiliar with the area I suggest you check it out on google earth. The hole is big enough you can zoom inside it and even fly around in it using the flight sim feature. It's smack between Tooele and Herriman in the Oquirrh Mountains on the west side of the Salt Lake Valley (SSW of SLC Int'l)

It's within the city of Magna. Not as far South as Sandy, yet about equally as West from SLC as Sandy is South.

Really, it's not far from Sandy City, Utah, a little bit outside of the town and on the west side of the valley.
