Since Austrians have different slang to normal German, the phrase he was reffering to may well be quite different in Austria.

"Austrian" is a slang word for German with Austrian dialect. The language spoken in Austria is German. There is not official "Austrian" language. As the Spanish that is spoken in Spain is quite different from the Spanish spoken in Bolivia. They both still speak Spanish.

Ignorance of a US president, or any leader for that matter, is important. Ignorance is the greatest enemy of free peoples.

To improve relations with other nations as Obama claims to wish for, it is probably a good thing to know something about these nations. Any person with reasonable knowledge knows that the German language is spoken in Austria. That same person would also know that many Swiss people speak German, not Swiss.
