I know that your comment is really old and you're probably not going to read this but somaliland was never part of ethiopia, it was a protectorate and not a colony and they weren't hostile (still aren't). They chose somaliland because of its location, bordering the red sea and its trade route with aden.

A protectorate is a de facto colony lets not try to mince words it was a protectorate because the British didn't want to expend resources in such a place.
