Does anybody know what kick triggers he is using in this video? those devices attached to pedals instead of classic kick pads. where to buy the same or simmilar?
@dangerrat456 ok, take a normal pedal. now take the beater and the shaft its attached to off. flip it upside down. Now put it back in the same hole you took it out of.
I have read through all the comments here and with all due respect, I think many of you are missing the point. We could debate his musicallity, or the sound quality, but the point you may be missing is that in the more melodic parts of this solo (at least), Thomas approaches the kit as an ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT, not just a simulation of a "real" kit. It's a slightly (or hugely) different mindset. Think about a piano versus a synthesizer for a good analogy. Open your mind and listen please!
its AMAZING how he does this,...i couldnt,...but does it sound good? i personally think no but that is just me im not a fan of the clave etc he sounds awesome when he tom rolls tho!! :P such flawless technique
IMO, electric kits are awesome for practice, especially if you live in an apartment, but I will always prefer acoustic kits for recording or live gigs.
yeah, that was pretty cool, but can u do that while launching a satellite into orbit, and performing open heat surgery, in the dark? seriously though. without sarcasm id b speechless. ur awesome monsieur.
Amazing comments! Lang's playing (typically) is some of the most incredible independence ever seen in drumming and most comments concern pejorative views on the sound (subjective envy-based prejudice!). It's like the girly selection of a car based on its colour and the pattern of it's fur-covered seats - totally ignoring the performance etc. Great drumming pundits, huh?
and the fun fact is that this electronic sounds extremely bad! - can see the point in using this, besides if you're living in a apartment where you can't play loud with real drums!
... Why is he playing on the preset kits...? Get an interface and play through DFH. Why doesn't Roland advertise the V-Drums capability to do this? They seriously need to update their samples; DFH puts these sounds to shame. V-Drums are ridiculously over-priced for the quality of sound that comes with the module.
the one major downfall to the TD-20's is the lack of pads you can have per one module. You obviously need 2 for that kit, and Im sure that Thomas Lang setup goes for well over 15,000 USD.
Thomas may appear to be a heavy hitter, and he can hit heavy. But he can articulate his sticks so well, that he can extract speed from rebound, not sheer force. His speed is also superlative, and speed=power. In some of the roland videos, you can tell he overspeeds the triggers ability to pick up. But again, he is all about technique and does not bludgeon as much as you'd think.
The sad thing is, it seems like he just jumped on the raw kit. Likely they didn't tune the drums to sound like drums because they had to spend a lot of time making sure they don't cross trigger(or trigger each other).
Think about what you said; "he just jumped on the raw kit?" Are you serious? That is WAY beyond a "raw kit" for him to quickly switch between the specific kits he used, not to mention that one module is all cymbals and the other all drums. There was definitely time involved to set that up. Granted, they are electronic sounding, but I think that was his point in this demonstration. Cross triggering can be easily controlled by a stable rack, playing gently, and easy adjustments.
It shouldn't matter when it's set up right, the whole point of V-Drums is to match the feel of a real drum (although they fall a touch short IMO). He's supposed to be playing them the way he would play an acoustic kit - that's the whole point. I'm not saying I disagree with you saying the drums sound crappy, the stock kits in the TD20 are poop, especially when you consider the capabilities the module. Roland are selling their own product short with a half-assed effort on the preset kits..
1) Even 'real' kits cross talk, and special adjustments have to be made. LOL
2) The thing is, Thomas is required to play on the 'raw' kit sounds is because roland doesn't want to give its customer the 'wrong idea'. If they showed what those kits could really do with custom tunning etc. . They would have to tack on a couple grand to include all the extra items(speakers/amps, expansion card, etc. . ).
I have the old TD20 (TD10), and i think that if i practiced every day of my life for 8 hours straight i may get close to having the ability of a bead of thomas langs sweat!!!!!!!
true, that's too bad.Electric still too expensive. Probably we have to wait for 10 years later.lol.And from what I know, only Roland and Yamaha are the top line brand.
Every drummer will prefer acoustic, including me. But I won't underestimate electric kit.
@ransisua. My thoughts excatly. I agree with everything you have said. Thomas Lang is one outstanding player and his foot work leaves most drummers chokeing in his dust. Good call myd friend.
Ok I found it! Roland KD-7 Compact Kick Trigger.
