Interesting experiment. Many problems here though. Where were these stands set up in the cities? Near homeless shelters. Now that might seem crass to say, but seriously a homeless person who has no money what so ever. Etc. etc. but this isn't about "honesty" its about just selling stuff with a new gimmick.

What if this was hidden? I a public space like that, people is shy because everybody can watch them. It would be more realistic if there would be no posibilty of being watched, then the true honesty could be observed. In Freakonomics there is an example of someone selling biscuits (or something alike, I don´t remember) in a similar way but, in my opinion, with an outcome more realistic.
