We just returned from Holbox (June 2010), Whale Sharks were 1 hour by boat, we had our choice of 5 sharks, found a big one 11 meters and each of the 6 passengers got as many snorkels as desired. This is an amazing adventure!
Glad you had a good time. It is an amazing experience. I'll be returning with some friends July 22-26. I just hope that the oil spill doesn't have a negative effect on them.
@docanes My 11 year old daughter also swam with the whale sharks (with the guide) she was terrified, but loved it, later regretting not taking another turn. She is afraid to snorkel in our local lake. This is a kid friendly activity. I can't say enough about Holbox and the local people. We also snorkeled an offshore reef and saw 2 lazy Nurse Sharks. Please eat the empanadas at Conquista Empanada, a local secret (shhhhhh)
I worked as a videographer in Exmouth/WA for 3 months last year and altough we saw at least 1 shark everyday at the high season, they need to use an spotter plane that flyes over the reef and finds the sharks in order to let the boat know where to go.
How expensive is it in Isla Holbox? How is it go get there?
Thanks for the message. Cost of the 5-day trip is $1500 and includes double occupancy hotel, transfers from Cancun airport to Holbox and back, private boat and guide. It is relatively to get from the US to Cancun International Airport. There are at least a dozen different carriers.
I have a friend who worked as a guide out of Exmouth and when I told her about the numbers of feeding whale sharks to be seen off Isla Holbox she was incredulous! While there are numerous WS off Exmouth it doesn't come close to the 20-30 animals you might see in a day's outing off Hollbox.
Oh my god yes. I am going this summer and this is my second trip. The last time, the least we saw in one day was 14. You can snorkle all around them....quite an experience. What was not mentioned is that if you want to be assured of seeing them, you must plan your trip the last two weeks in July, 1st two weeks in August...that is when they are everywhere.

Is it better than Exmouth, WA?

In my opinion, yes.
