thats not really how it works, it has to go inside the crystal to work, they are looking for microbes trapped in the gypsum (as opposed to quartz which is pressure formed, the gypsum is evaporite, so it traps creatures as the gypsum forms on the crystal in successive layers. the laser is ment to hit microbes inside the different layers, so contamination on the outside isnt going to make a huge difference.
